I was certain Barbie had a black friend when I was that age(12years ago). What a sad thought that they might have got rid of her, as you say it's 2014!

Going out tonight so will see if anyone remembers her name!

DD has this one, but with curly hair. One of her friends bought it for her and she was delighted to have a doll that looks like her.

You can also get black cabbage patch dolls

There are a few moxie girlz or bratz dolls that might suit? I don't think there is one with Afro hair, but definitely some curly haired ones.

If you know anyone who is going to the US, and have a sizeable budget, the American Girl dolls may suit. store.americangirl.com/agshop/html/thumbnail/id/127/uid/86

I had a Sasha doll in the 1970's. OP you are right, there's a real shortage of black fashion dolls. I really disliked Bratz dolls a few years ago, but to give them credit they did have a range of ethnicities.

I wonder why there are so few black dolls now? I think if someone is entrepreneurial, this would be a great business idea which would appeal to both black and white children,

moxie and brats are good other than the huge amount of makeup. Arrgh this is so hard

I have 3 upstairs which belong to my (grown-up) daughters. And I had a black baby doll many, many years ago.

I wish somebody would as there is a market for this, however some of them look weird is is too much to ask to have a nice friendly looking one rather than a chucky lookalike?

Have you tried education suppliers? Galt will be too young for a 10 year old more than likely but I do seem to remember them selling them. Small indie shops are probably your best bet though, look on Etsy maybe?

Lilydoll do all sorts. They are soft bodied but for older dc rather than younger. They have great clothes.

I had a problem in the 90s finding a doll for my son. There were action men but they were a bit fighting orientated and you couldn't change the costumes the way you could in the 70s. He was a bit young for action men when he first wanted dolls as well. Not sure if things are any better now.
Having a standard doll in different colours and male and female but lots of different outfits doesn't make as much money as special edition dolls that can't wear other clothing.

Not cheap, but very high quality and comes with a historical back story. These dolls were the must-have accessory when I was a pre-teen.

I had this problem a while back with my DS. It really angered me that I had such a hard time in 2014 ffs.

To the person who said 'you're not looking hard enough' you shouldn't have to look hard at all dolls should come in a range of ethnicities everywhere just like the people buying them do!!

I also found that black dolls are mostly the same as white dolls just made in brown material/plastic, they still have white features and European hair.

I've made lots of complaints to various toy manufacturers I think it's outrageous

It's ridiculous that my DSIS, in 1970's 100% white rural Wales, had an Asian Pipa doll and I had a homemade rag doll my aunt got me who was a black princess one way up and a white girl in a long day dress the other, yet in 2014 ethic dolls are still not mainstream.

Oh and don't worry about the makeup, you've got a year max before you'll stop bothering to say wash that off before you go out.

Not strictly a "straight" fashion doll, but Clawdeen Wolf from Monster High is (to my eyes) Afro-Caribbean.

There's a black barbie with AfroCaribbean hair, I've just googled it.

I am really surprised to read this! I had a black barbie growing up in a very rural area in the 80s. Hope you find one soon op.
