Is the risk of dying in a plane crash really one in 7,800? That seems very high to me.

I thought that. 72 million people flew from Heathrow last year. Thats nearly 200,000 a day. Is there a plane a day falling out of the sky that no one has told us about?

Sorry Turgid but some people carry on like every man is likely to try and molest their children.

I agree with turgiday

I'm going to let you all in on another secret: there really is a paedophile around almost every corner
And most of them are men.

Report
turgiday · 03/05/2014 14:59

I dont see that happening at all here.

All we are saying is that since it is so easy to miminise a small risk, why not do it?

The risk of dying in a plane crash is small. But if it was the case that sitting on the right hand side of the plane reduced my risk, I would book seats there. It is just daft not to do things that minimise risk, that are so easy to do.

And your proof of this is?

Report
TheRealAmandaClarke · 03/05/2014 15:03

Its not really possible to give you proof with that.
Because of issues like confidentiality and data protection.
But it is absolutely true that there are lots of em about.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 03/05/2014 15:05

And that most of them are male.
those stats are widely available btw.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 03/05/2014 15:06

So I would want to take whatever measures were needed to reduce the risks to my DCs.
But no, that doesn't mean I think every man is a sexual predator.

But that still doesn't mean that all men are potential child molesters.

My Brother and I flew every school holidays (not always together depending on school break up dates, short and long haul) as unaccompanied minors from ages 10 -16, never had a problem, we also had to stay overnight in a hotel in Singapore because there wasn't a connecting flight till the next morning sometimes, any unaccompanied kids would be taken there by a ground hostess and picked up again in the morning, she didn't stay at the hotel with us.
Once we stayed overnight in Rome because there had been a bomb on a plane at Athens and I think we were supposed to be refuelling there.
Imagine that happening now! Grin

And you managed to do all that without dying in a crash or being molested, Gertie?

Report
gertiegusset · 03/05/2014 15:14

Yep.

gertiegusset · 03/05/2014 15:16

No sensible adult would have wanted to sit next to us, sometimes we'd meet up with other kids we knew who were going to the same place, it was a gas.

I would love to know the statistics behind this. The hysteria from some people is maddening at times.

So, how many children have abused on a plane by a stranger in the last xx number of years?

Report
TheRealAmandaClarke · 03/05/2014 15:17

OK. So because gentile was ok, it doesn't happen
Phew

Report
gertiegusset · 03/05/2014 15:18

Yes, the stats would be interesting.

Report
Hulababy · 03/05/2014 15:19

Trouble is I suspect the real stats would show the incidences to be so incredibly low it wouldn't be worth even reporting on.

Report
TheRealAmandaClarke · 03/05/2014 15:19

Sorry.
Gertie

Report
gertiegusset · 03/05/2014 15:22

Oh I'm not saying it has never happened, just that in all the times I did it I never heard of anyone having a problem.

A little bit of research on my part here has shown that about 1-2% of men are paedophiles. www.theguardian.com/society/2013/jan/03/paedophilia-bringing-dark-desires-light

The capacity of a 747 is about 350. Assuming a 50/50 split of men and women on the plane it means that 1 - 2 of the men on the plane is a paedophile.

I'll grant you that I don't like those odds, and I do see your point. However 1- 2 % is a far cry from there being a paedo round every corner.

Report
turgiday · 03/05/2014 15:29

Hulababy - Who cares if it is low. If it is your child it happens to, it matters. We are not talking about doing way out things like chartering planes just for kids. Getting unaccompanied children to sit next to a woman rather than a man, is no big deal.

Report
CalamitouslyWrong · 03/05/2014 16:04

Even if 1-2% of men were attracted to children (and that figure presumably includes hebephiles and ephebophiles), that doesn't mean that they would all act on it. The majority of them will be adequately socialised and will understand that their attractions are unacceptable and not to be acted on in any way (or mentioned to anyone in many cases).

And even of those who might act on those attractions, the vast majority of them would only do so in situations where they are less likely to be caught (I.e. With children to whom they have access, and can get alone). The proportion who would do so in a crowded public space is an even smaller percentage of a small percentage of an already quite small percentage of men.

And what percentage of women are attracted to children and teenagers? It's not just men.

Report
CalamitouslyWrong · 03/05/2014 16:05

But turgid, seating them next yo a women really doesn't make very much difference to the actual risk at all. Thinking that children are 'safe' around women just because they are women is quite dangerous thinking really.

Report
turgiday · 03/05/2014 16:12

Children are statistically less likely to be sexually harassed or abused by a woman, than a man. That doesn't mean they are safe, it is about reducing risk.

And the number of men who sexually abuse and/or harass children is way higher than that. Most are not exclusively interested in children.
