to think I might be inadvertantly poisoning us all

Everyone in our family (myself, dh and 3dc) has had intermittent abdominal pain, diarrhoea and nausea for the last 6 weeks or so. Wtf is going on?? I'm genuinely starting to wonder if our water is contaminated or something. AIBU/overly dramatic?

Have you been to the doctor?

Happypiglet · 30/04/2014 20:46

Cryptosporidium? Can catch from swimming pools. My bro and his family had it over Christmas and it took weeks to get rid of. They would be OK for a bit then feel bad again. Drs can check for it from a poo sample.
It's a parasite. But I could be entirely wrong! Not a Dr btw...

TattyDevine · 30/04/2014 20:50

Don't jump to conclusions but don't not check it out. I had similar (if you are bored/desperate enough to advance search my name apart from all the hair dye threads you will probably find the what the eff is wrong with me ones approximately 4 years ago!) but it did turn out to be a virus. People were worried about all sorts including carbon monoxide poisoning plus something else name I can't remember but it was just a virus.

Like I say that's not a diagnosis, see your DR but chances are you have not killed all the people Grin

You need to take poo samples to the doctors and get treated.

It may well be water, it really not a good idea to leave it as you can end up with long term damage.

until you know only drink water that has been boiled.

Cryptosporidium or Giardia lamblia is a good bet, so get to the doctors with those samples and finish the course of antibiotics, and then go to the best local health food shop and ask for a wide range probiotic for you all to take it will take a while for your systems to recover,

and lots of cleaning, hand washing, and no cooking for other people until you find out what you have.

Thanks, that's great advice. I've just had a thought that it could be our dishwasher. Do you think it's a possible culprit if it were regurgitating foul water during its cycle? I had aglass from there which smelt odd earlier...
Off to google those viruses now - thank you!

Have you been on holiday recently, any new pets, been to a farm?

coffeeinbed · 30/04/2014 21:04

Do you clean the door handles and the light switches?

gotnotimeforthat · 30/04/2014 21:06

Do you know if any neighbours have been sick? If it was the water a lot of homes would be affected as the water will come from the same place,I think.

have you been to the doctor?I would book each family member an appointment and see if they can get a diagnosis. It's possible it could just be a virus

shebird · 30/04/2014 21:08

Oh sounds nasty. Dishwasher is worth an investigation although the temperature should be high enough to kill bugs. Maybe clean out the filter etc. and just run it through empty on the highest temperature cycle just to be sure.

icanneverremember · 30/04/2014 21:08

We have been to a farm recently but that was since we've been ill.

And yes, I'm fastidious about cleaning everything but with three young children around things aren't always as clean as they could be and viruses could certainly be passed on.

We have relatively new pet rabbits (just before Christmas) and they were ill with e-cuniculli but I understand that's not usually transferrable to humans. They've also been well for several months now...

I'll book an appointment in the morning but we usually have to wait 4 weeks - ugh, hopefully we'll be better by then!

Might not be relevent but we've all been sleeping more than usual too - I had to wake all three dc up at 7.30 the other morning which is unheard of!

Could it be a carbon monoxide issue - low level? Have you a very old boiler? Diarrhea not really a symptom of this but worth checking.
