to want to spend 200 on a really nice bed set

missjersey · 28/04/2014 19:58

Stayed at a hotel at the weekend and it made me realise how awful my bed sheets are. They are cheap dovet and a bog standard cover.

Seen a nice luxary dovet and cover that would come to about 200.

Dh says it is too much and not needed. I think we use it every day and old set is 6 years old.

Don't have much money, but really want this wool set with 350tc cover

If I was to spend that much on duvet cover and sheets then I would buy only white so then to change it up you would only need to buy pretty pillow cases and a duvet topper/throw.
Putting a throw over the duvet might also protect from cat claws and potential pee and sick.bleugh..

stealthsquiggle · 29/04/2014 13:37

I definitely recommend white. Apart from anything else, you can bleach/boil wash it as needed to keep it white.

£200 Shock

Am I the only one who barely managed to get under the covers before passing out? I literally wouldn't know if I was sleeping under a bin bag most of the time, but I agree that if it's important to you and you have the cash then there are worse things to blow it on!

steff13 · 29/04/2014 14:44

I don't know if Overstock.com ships to the UK, but you might want to check with them. I got 1200 TC sheets for our bed for about $80. They have full bed sets as well, but I didn't price them; we already have a nice duvet.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/04/2014 14:44

What's your secret, DoJo? Insomnia is a near-nightly joy for me!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 29/04/2014 14:51

We bought 400tc bedding 6 years ago - it is white - and still looks fabulous.

I do have flannelette bottom sheets for the winter though, the heaviest I could find were from The Linen Cupboard. I think they have them on sale atm.

HanSolo · 29/04/2014 23:08

My DD has the ikea blue toile de jouy set! She loves it Grin

I would like linen, but just cannot justify the cost when I have perfectly good bed linen already, that never seems to expire (tip- Habitat and Muji do the best, longest lasting bed linen).

storynanny2 · 29/04/2014 23:16

Another vote for tkmaxx. The best bedlinen I ever bought were Sandersons sets, very reduced at tkmaxx, never needs ironing and still going strong after 6 years

1000 TC is a really subjective thing loads of people really hate it. I love it and all the bedding I have in use is 1000tc but most guests hate it and I mean really hate it so I keep a 300tc set just for guests.

gasman · 30/04/2014 01:03

I was given some money just after I bought my first flat which I blew on a v. Expensive goose down duvet and some good quality bedlinen. 10 years later I still have both. The bedding is used on a rotation with another set about has seen some pretty heavy wear. I probably need to invest on a new fitted sheet now but I'm waiting for the summer sales.

John lewis, selfridges (Sheridan is my fave there) are good places to watch. I recently got a lovely dorma set I've been covering from afar for half price via bedeck. Tk max is also a good place to look.

I helped my Dad clear out his airing cupboard and we ended up binning masses of worn supermarket bedlinen that was only a couple of years old. It is false economy IMO.

AgaPanthers · 30/04/2014 01:30

£200 is not that much if you are including the duvet.

I want this and one of these days I'm going to get it:

Ours is £££ from The White Company and it has been worth every penny. I find it difficult to sleep so need a really comfy bed. They have washed well and seem to get softer every time. Yes they are crumpled but I rather like a crumpled bed sheet. They look cosy and inviting.

Plus I'm not about to start ironing bed linen that only DH and I will ever see. One step away from ironing knickers imo.

nowahousewife · 30/04/2014 07:58

Agree with others who have said buy plain white. You'll notice all good hotels only use white as do designers. It always looks fresh, never dates and you can tart it up with throws, cushions etc which you can change about to suit your mood, the season whatever.

Also agree with those that have said higher thread count does tend to wrinkle. Guilty secret.....I send my duvet covers and pillow cases out to be ironed Wink

Shockers · 30/04/2014 08:02

I got a lovely Hobbs set from TKMaxx. I never tumble it, I line dry bedding where poss, or hang it over a tall maiden on the landing (good air circulation up there). It doesn't need ironing then... although I admit my smoothness standards aren't particularly high.

coralanne · 30/04/2014 08:32

My hobby is patchwork and quilting and I think nothing of spending an absolute fortune on fabric and many, many hours making quilts when requested by family and friends.

But I only buy average bedding for myself. I know the quality of the expensive ones in the shops are no where near as well made as the ones I make myself.

RigglinJigglin · 30/04/2014 09:20

good good lord, why did I not think about their eBay store. Our poor credit card Grin

I think I've seen someone mention but bedeck have a mid season sale at the mo with 600tc sheets on sale

AgaPanthers · 30/04/2014 19:22

Achica have just got the 1000 t/c linen in:

paxtecum · 30/04/2014 20:11

TK Maxx.

I don't iron sheets either (waste of time).

GobbolinoCat · 30/04/2014 20:15

AgaPanthers

I have spent time time fondling those duvets in JL, "But DH cant you feel its like a cloud....like a cloud...." One day .

The other link Shock.

AgaPanthers · 30/04/2014 20:56

I keep meaning to go fondle those duvets. Are they much nicer than the merely £200 duvets?

Mandatorymongoose · 30/04/2014 21:08

I used to viciously gently mock DH for spending ridiculous amounts of money on bedlinen. Until we were given a lovely set as a wedding gift and now I'm a convert, I'd still buy it in the sales though.
