to want to spend 200 on a really nice bed set

Stayed at a hotel at the weekend and it made me realise how awful my bed sheets are. They are cheap dovet and a bog standard cover.

Seen a nice luxary dovet and cover that would come to about 200.

Dh says it is too much and not needed. I think we use it every day and old set is 6 years old.

Don't have much money, but really want this wool set with 350tc cover

Oh I so get this...for years I have had an Asda basics duvet cover which has washed and washed but which bobbled at the earliest opportunity so wasn't great on comfort. Post-divorce, I saved and saved for some expensive stuff I loved the pattern of and which also happened to come in at £160 for a kingsize duvet cover and pillowcases and believe me, the difference is incredible. I managed to get it half price in a sale in the end and I can honestly say I just feel amazing when I settle down for the night! Check out sales, particularly online, and TK Maxx and see what you can find. You shouldn't have to pay full price for it if you're prepared to just sit and wait and keep an eye on things.

littlegreengloworm · 28/04/2014 21:47

I buy plain white duvet sets and dump them when they are done. I totally get you wanting the hotel luxury thing though. It's the ironing or them and price that stops me.

RedToothBrush · 28/04/2014 21:47

Bedeck Clearance.

Got a store at Cheshire Oaks but they have an online store too. V v nice at reasonable prices.

Have picked up some great deals there in the past.

stealthsquiggle · 28/04/2014 21:48

If you can afford it, go for it. You will appreciate it every time you go to bed. Keep a watch on the white company for sales and offers. That and a really good feather duvet. Bliss.

I am going to get one of those teddy bear mattress toppers when DH isn't looking. I got one for DD's bed, and the cats and I agree that it is the snuggliest thing ever.

Oldraver · 28/04/2014 21:49

Oh OP SaucyMare has a point. My DS had a wool duvet and it was lovely to wash and very light but it was solid and not like feathers that you could fluff up and squish around.

Soft and fluffy sheets/duvet cover combines with a squishy duvet = bliss

Oldraver · 28/04/2014 21:51

Oh yes to the teddybear topper

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 28/04/2014 21:57

YY to checking TK Maxx - I got a superking down duvet for £48 & 400TC duvet set for £20.

For wool duvets, have a look at the DAPW (Duvet & Pillow Warehouse) and wait for a sale/discount code.

Lovely linen = totally worth it.

crazykat · 28/04/2014 22:43

If you can afford it then get it. We got two sets of 300 thread count bedding for our kingsize bed when we moved into our first house together and, apart from one sheet which DH ripped, its still going strong five years later (I have since bought another set in different colours).

Its lovely and soft, it could do with being ironed but tbh I'm not bothered about creased bedding.

The only problem is I can't sleep on cheaper bedding anymore as it feels like sandpaper to me now that I'm used to the high thread count.

The asda 300 thread count bedding is good though, I got a new sheet to replace the one DH ripped and its no different to the original set apart from its plain whereas the original set has a stripe pattern.

SheherazadeSchadenfreude · 28/04/2014 22:50

I got some lovely expensive bed linen. Clumsy cat jumped on the bed, lost his balance and ripped a hole in it. Sewed up the hole, he did the same thing on the other side the next night. Then Kitten skipped into the room and decided she would piss all over it. Once by the feet, once at the pillow end, sprinkling the (new) pillows as well as soaking the duvet. Somehow, it's lost its appeal now.

fredfredgeorgejnr · 28/04/2014 22:52

It doesn't NEED ironing... it's just crumpled, just as comfy to sleep in.

Quinteszilla · 28/04/2014 22:55

Designers Guild has a bed linen sale on. Lush duvets from King of Cotton.....

WaitingForMe · 28/04/2014 23:24

The most important things (after food and shelter) to spend money on are your shoes, your sofa and you bed IMO since you're usually on one of them.

Oldraver · 29/04/2014 00:10

If you want the softness but dont want to spend the money on high thread count (not all people can or want to) have a look at brushed cotton/flanelette

I have a 600tc flat sheet and pillowcases I use with a Sainsburys flanelette fitted bottom as the fitted sheet i the 600 tc was sold out.....there isnt much in it with regards to softness

Glastokitty · 29/04/2014 00:13

Tkmaxx is great for high thread count sheets. And feather duvets are far superior to horrid synthetic ones.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/04/2014 08:21

Can I suggest Viceroy bedding online for really reasonable Egyptian cotton sheets? Also TK Maxx is great and Dunelm. John Lewis cotton sheets are fab too. I never iron, just tumble dry and shake and fold.

missjersey · 29/04/2014 08:46

Thanks everyone.

Tbh the 200, is on the cheap end.

Found a 20% discount code for soak and sleep and spent 130 on the wool duvet and pillows.

Now back to dunelm to look at the sheets. Now I'm thinking 350 is not high enough.

Does anyone know q shop I can feel 600-1000 tc?

I have a 200 and a 400 sheet, after a couple of washes I couldn't tell which was which, though both vastly superior to every other sheet in my house.

I love that slightly crumpled texture - when it's not been screwed up.

One day I will have a 1000.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/04/2014 10:12

Both of our current duvet-and-pillowcase sets are from IKEA. They do 100% cotton sets, and some of them are really luxurious in feel - not all of them, though, so it is worth fondling the ones that are hanging up round the wall, to find the softest ones.

My favourite ever set came from there - it's a blue on white toile de jouy pattern, and I love it so much. Sadly the top seam has failed, at the point where I hold it each night to pull it over my shoulder - and the fabric is very worn there, so I think it would fail again, if I mended it.

I haven't thrown it away, though - I am seriously considering buying a good quality plain white duvet cover, cutting the front off the nice cover, trimming off the edge all round, and applique-ing it onto the white one - so there is a central section of pretty, toile de jouy, with a white border. So the old cover is sitting in the airing cupboard, waiting for me to get my arse in gear and do this.

Quinteszilla · 29/04/2014 11:32

" it's a blue on white toile de jouy pattern," I hanker after this one.

I have invested in lots of lovely lush bedding, I love my bed. All I need now are the curtains to go with my serene white and blue heaven. Grin

Shenanagins · 29/04/2014 11:42

10 years ago I bought a few sets with a 400 hundred thread count in neutral colours and they still look brand new - worth every penny if you can afford it.

GobbolinoCat · 29/04/2014 11:50

I agree with TK max, they also have dorma and christy etc...I got two high thread count sheets from them and they are fabulous, who knew a sheet could give pleasure

Rigglin - I have two joules sets and love them. There are some reduced in superking on amazon and also their ebay outlet store Wink

HolidayCriminal · 29/04/2014 12:09

If you don't go into debt or deprive anybody of essentials, then spend your money how you like.

I haven't bought new bed linen in last 15 years. Probably will need 1 or 2 more fitted sheets before I die, that's all.
