To ask what's this 'biscuit' all about?

CrohnicallyHungry · 24/04/2014 22:35

Watching channel 4 and the announcer biscuit keeps randomly biscuit saying 'biscuit' in the middle of her biscuit sentences.

Can anyone biscuit enlighten me?

I wonder what the outcome would have been/is if a Tourette's sufferer applies for such a position? There is no doubt in my mind that refusing an application on the basis of Tourettes would clearly be disability discrimination.

Ruushii, your first post was perfect. Op asked a question and you provided the answer.

Your second post was unnecessary and unfair.

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 24/04/2014 23:39

It's a judgement call, Nursey, and perhaps we don't get it right all the time, but for the record, if criticism is made of a post in a way that actually insults the poster then the post/poster thing is pretty moot. Like I say, though, judgement call. We're just doing what we think is best at the time, honest.

Ledkr · 24/04/2014 23:39

I posted the same question in chat and got a few replies and reasonable people. I found out why it was and posted.
Good reason never to post on aibu.

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 24/04/2014 23:40

Kelly, thanks for reconsidering your post. I will delete the first as together they merely serve, of course, to repeat what you wrote before.

ItsBritneyBitch · 24/04/2014 23:41

So that's what that was! I'm off to google her. I do love C4 sometimes!

Gee thanks Helen.

While you've got your trigger-happy on maybe take a look at the post I was referring to? You know, the on which accuses op of mocking a persons disability (when she clearly did not know the repetition of biscuit was a tic) and inferred she was a twat?

(Actually I couldn't give two monkeys, and would prefer fewer deletions but a bit of consistency wouldn't go amiss)

lemonforyourlime · 25/04/2014 10:35

kellyhopter - in the op's second post which has now been deleted she said
"I found it surreal. As funny as if I had pooped my pants " or something to that effect. At this point she did know the repetition was a tic.

Tourettes is an disability that elicits such little sympathy. Reading some of the comments on here I wish my 9 year old could swap her tourettes a wheelchair.

IdkickJilliansAss · 25/04/2014 12:46

I think it's a good thing because as some posters on this thread evidence lots of people think Tourette's is just about shouting swear words

AmazingDisgrace · 25/04/2014 14:19

Only around 10% of people who have Tourette Syndrome have the swearing tics. I'm shocked at some of the attitudes on this thread. I have a child with TS and he'd do anything not to tic and be mocked and made fun of.

CrohnicallyHungry · 25/04/2014 14:30

Let me explain a few things now I'm feeling a bit better.

As I said in my now-deleted post, I was undergoing colonoscopy prep. I was dizzy, disorientated, and found the situation surreal and wasn't entirely sure if I was hearing the word 'biscuit', if it was a figment of my imagination, something wrong with the telly (it has been known to randomly turn on/off and switch channels without us doing anything), or what.

I did also say I found it funny- that is found as in the past tense, it appeared funny to me while I was trying to make sense of what was being said. And then with the two posts that ruushii made, I wasn't sure if they were being serious or just trying to make me feel bad, it often happens on here that someone complains about something (not that I was complaining mind) and someone else will offer up disability or SEN as a potential cause or contributing factor.

At the point I made my second post I had only seen the first 5 replies, and I didn't see the rest till just now because I went more or less straight to bed after I posted (not realising that more had been posted while I was typing and ruushii obviously was being serious).

So I'm sorry if I offended anybody, and I hope I've explained myself a little better this morning. Note to self- not only is it not good to post while drunk, the effects of prep leave you feeling a little drunk so don't post then either!

BuzzardBird · 25/04/2014 14:33

Tourettes is a really awful condition for anyone to suffer from. I am quite shocked at the lack of knowledge that has been shown about this.

BuzzardBird · 25/04/2014 14:35

I actually don't think there was anything wrong with asking the question OP, whether you were a little 'out of it' or not, it was a reasonable thing to ask.

PoundingTheStreets · 25/04/2014 14:37

Ignoring the slight derailing that happened, I have to say I am very impressed at Channel 4 doing this rather than just making a documentary about it instead.

devoniandarling · 25/04/2014 14:49

My daughter had a tutor who suffers with Tourette's. he happens to be a friend of the family and I have never ever heard him swear. Swearing is not the only tic that affects Tourette's sufferers.

What a nice way for channel four to raise awareness. This thread is rather holey now, but I believe I has served a purpose.

Hope your feeling better now op. your original question was not unreasonable.

FraidyCat · 25/04/2014 16:52

This thread reminds me of when I first encountered Jonathan Ross on TV, in the late eighties I think. I seriously wondered if the program was some sort of spoof, the idea that someone who had a speech impediment would be employed to talk (host a chat show) seemed very far-fetched.

I am sure any number of people here will tell me that he has all sorts of wonderful qualities and his lisp is irrelevant, however I never particularly liked him, and my view is there are probably hundreds/thousands of lisp-free people who (with a little training) could do his job just as well. I believe success in mass-entertainment is more a matter of luck than unique talent.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 25/04/2014 17:34

Im not sure i really understand your point fraidycat. There are hundreds or thousands of lisp free people who could do his job. And? There are hundreds of people who, with a bit of training, could do a lot of jobs, maybe better than the ones who are currently doing them. They dont get to sack the person doing the job if their employers are happy enough to keep renewing their contracts. You mightnt like JR. I dont either but there is something about the guy that means he keeps appearing on our screens when others are dropping off after a few years.

LetZygonsBeZygons · 25/04/2014 17:54

that's the thing. everyone assumes tourettes is the F word. only that.

My DC has tourettes and she says ''shut up, chicken'' all the time, that's her repeated 'swear' words.

If shes not accused of being rude and badly brought up then ''she cant have tourettes ,she doeasnt say F F F F all the time''.

MoominAndMiniMoom · 25/04/2014 18:07

This is a really nasty thread... bashing people with Tourette's isn't bad enough, let's bash speech impediments too! What else should we decide people shouldn't do, on the basis that others might do it better because they don't have a condition they can't help?

alAswad · 25/04/2014 18:56

I didn't see the announcement, but her TEDx talk held my attention a lot better than moet I've seen, so clearly she can successfully do a job that involves speaking I can see why people might her tics annoying, but there are plenty of people whose actual voices I find annoying (not because of speech impediments, just the way they pronounce certain words or whatever), doesn't mean they can't do their jobs.

alAswad · 25/04/2014 18:57

might find ber tics annoying

alAswad · 25/04/2014 18:58

her! FFS, I give up. Better not try for a job that involves writing, people will be queuing up to claim I can't do it properly Wink
