to give DC tinned pineapple?

DS has developed a love of pineapple from having it a couple of times at nursery where they do it from fresh.

Cutting up a fresh pineapple seems like a massive faff but, if it would be better than tins, I am well prepared to be told IABU.

I'd get the kind in juice not syrup.

Awaiting your wisdom.

But also fresh uses less resources - no aluminium cans, less airmiles etc.

Because the fresh ones in Waitrose were grown in store?
I never fail to be impressed at the things this website can make smug

Donki · 23/04/2014 06:08

Why pineapples only cost 79p
(This links to a pdf)

TheRealAmandaClarke · 23/04/2014 06:51

because the fresh ones in waitrose were grown in store
thanks for that Grin

TheRealAmandaClarke · 23/04/2014 06:54

pineapples cost 70p?

Last time I was in Spain someone was selling them for 10 euros. Each.

YouDoVooDoo · 23/04/2014 06:59

stillstayingclassyinsanDiego what have you done?!! My diet restarted yesterday but now I WANT THAT! I bloody love Jamaica ginger cake, and cream, and tinned mandarins

SlightlyJadedJack · 23/04/2014 07:02

I am the laziest cow in the world when it comes to buying prepared food but actually the price of prepacked pineapple vs an actual pineapple is huge. And it turns out its very easy to chop with a big sharp knife (revelation to me! Grin it appears to be the only thing I don't mind chopping (and then snaffling most of it before the DCs get their mitts on it).

YouDoVooDoo · 23/04/2014 07:03

OMG Donki Shock Sad - can you buy fair trade pineapples anywhere/everywhere?

tobysmum77 · 23/04/2014 07:08

yabu to say that tinned is anything like fresh it isnt. Yabu to be too lazy to chop up a pineapple (it normally takes me longer to find the tin opener). Yanbu for giving tinned fruit sometimes though (mine love it, particularly that awful fruit cocktail) Hmm

TheRealAmandaClarke · 23/04/2014 07:09

fruit cocktail if I'm desperate Grin

Gileswithachainsaw · 23/04/2014 07:09

I missed the memo clearly. Tinned fruit eaters in the chainsaw house!

Tinned pineapple is fine. Mmm pineapple upside down cake

Don't see a problem we eat fresh and tinned fruit.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 23/04/2014 07:11

YouDo it is delicious Wink

Have to say though, Jamaican ginger cake isn't as big as it used to be so not too fattening if you have a smallish piece.

One of your 5 a day if you count the fruit.

tobysmum77 · 23/04/2014 07:13

we could start a whole new pearl-clutching thread about fruit cocktail couldn't we?

TheRealAmandaClarke · 23/04/2014 07:14

Fresh is nice.
But tinned is absolutely fine IMHO.
And the Big palmy stalk blocks up the waste disposal or pokes holes in the bin liner.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 23/04/2014 07:15

Fresh pineapple is a menace.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 23/04/2014 07:18

Yes tobysmum
Lidl do giant cans of the stuff.
In syrup.
That should get us started.

YouDoVooDoo · 23/04/2014 07:39

Grin that's ok then!

JodieGarberJacob · 23/04/2014 16:35

All this talk of fruit cocktail reminded me of Sybil's very funny line in Fawlty Towers.

  • Uh, excuse me.
  • Yes?
  • Do you think we could cancel our fruit salads?
  • Well, it's a little tricky, chef's just opened the tin.
  • Oh. Never mind. I'm sure it'll be very nice, thank you.
Anonynony · 23/04/2014 16:39

I was genuinely just wondering the same thing, delighted to find this!

Elfhame · 23/04/2014 16:54

I love tinned fruit. I buy it as much for myself as the kids.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 23/04/2014 17:52

Grin jodie
Bliss.

AlpacaYourThings · 23/04/2014 17:59

I've never eaten tinned fruit before. Blush

coffeeinbed · 23/04/2014 18:24

I make a lovely flan with tinned pears.

peppercold · 23/04/2014 18:48

As kids we used to have vanilla ice cream, tinned pears and hot cocolate sauce. It was amazing!

Gileswithachainsaw · 23/04/2014 19:01

Chocolate and pear sponge with tinned pears is yummy :)

HolidayCriminal · 23/04/2014 19:38

ooh, syrupy peaches on ice cream is sounding really yummy right now. Maybe I'll get that in sometime.
