to cry about my lips?

Am 45 and have had coldsores for as long as I can remember.

Over the past few days my upper kip has erupted and I now have bee-stung upper lip complete with open weeping sores. My bottom lip is tingling now :(.

Zovirax etc hasn't helped. Feel ill and, without trying, am looking sulky. Tomorrow my lower lip will be like my top one.

Any advice please?

Aciclovir tablets work for me, cream never does. I keep a supply in the house all the time and start taking at first tingle. My GP was very sympathetic and happy to prescribe when I explained how frequent and how extensive my cold sores were. Agree take a photo to show them at their worst.

LucilleBluth · 20/04/2014 09:06

Lysine, Lysine, Lysine.

Go on Amazon now and buy some, the best thing I ever did.

I have had them on and off for years but a couple of years ago after moving back from living abroad I was rarely without one....the Lysine worked wonders, how the hell doctors don't recommend it I don't know.

FanjolinaJolie · 20/04/2014 09:19

Get to out of hours GP and start Aciclovir tablets.

Once this attack has subsided ask for long-term antiviral medication, your GP can prescribe this.

Look seriously at your diet and see if there are any obvious triggers you can avoid. Nuts? Chocolate?

I'd recommend a high strength Vit C, probiotic and green supplement as a starting point. Llycine also to be recommended.

I also recommend and swear by the Boots zapper.

LoveBeingCantThinkOfAName · 20/04/2014 09:33

Agree re the tablets, I got a bad one inside my nose and really helped.

I've used the patches for years now so much better as the healing time seems to be cut down. They don't crust and scab in the same way because the air isn't getting to it. Though I do sometimes have to use 2 at a time due to there size.

I was bought the zapper for Xmas but haven't really had need for it yet

LoveBeingCantThinkOfAName · 20/04/2014 09:34

Ps YANBU

Can't you go to the OOH, OP? It sounds incredibly painful. I wouldn't want to wait until Tuesday.

Alchemist · 21/04/2014 20:42

Have started Aciclovir tablets and have had 3 doses today.

Feel quite wimpy but my whole mouth, inside and outside, is just so sore. I haven't had anything like this ever and I thought I had had bad coldsores :(. I feel really shite, ill and achey. All my skin hurts.

Tomorrow will be better

Alchemist I can completely sympathise, before I got prescribed the Aciclover tablets I got cildsores like that. My final straw was one winter when my entire upper lip erupted, it went right up and inside my nose. Not only was it utterly humiliating to have to go out and face people ( which you obviously have to do, can't imagine my boss would have been impressed if I'd phoned in sick with coldsores) it was agony.

The tablets have saved me, I now get them on repeat prescription and keep s stock so that I always have them for when I feel the tell tale tingle.

Keep going, you will notice a difference in a couple of days. I do feel for toy, it's miserable.

Imfeckinpetigo · 21/04/2014 20:51

You of course, not toy that would be stupid!

Oh OP you have my sympathy.
I can't add anything to the treatment list, but can you dose up on ibuprofen and then paracetamol to help with your pain?

Sounds grim.

ChocolateCoveredMisery · 21/04/2014 22:13

Poor you.

I've had cold sores for as long as I can remember. I had an awful outbreak a few years ago, similar to what you're having now and aciclovir tablets worked wonders, I didn't get a cold sore for 18 months and even now when I do get one they are nothing compared to previous times.

Make sure you drink plenty of fluids as well while taking them, your GP should have told you so, but just incase.

Cold compress should ease the pain as well.

winklewoman · 21/04/2014 22:32

My GP gave me Valtrex, which, I think, is a form of Acyclovir, and it is very effective. But when this bout of sores has healed, you need another prescription on standby, so you can take a tablet at the first tingle rather than wait for a doc's appointment; the earlier you start to take them, the more effective they are.

heraldgerald · 21/04/2014 23:01

Poor you, feel better soon

FanjolinaJolie · 23/04/2014 06:23

I would commend some high strength Vit C to aid your skin healing.
