Having the loft converted and thought the builders were using the upstairs bathroom. But it seems they are also using the downstairs loo (well someone is leaving the seat up!) and using my Molton Brown soap.

Will they be upset if I substitute a lesser brand? WWYD?

My parents think that Tesco hand wash is a waste of money because most of the product goes down the drain, compared with a bar of soap.

Molton Brown is just one of the many ways modern life has found of convincing people to waste their money on stupid shit they don't need, purely on an price elasticity basis (there is no fucking basis in the fucking world for £16 fucking quid for a small bottle of fucking soap, but they have found out that people will pay that because it's been wall marketed and they convince people that they have found a payoff for sixty hours a week of labour in the form of soap).

I always use dock leaves on my arse. Free, environmentally-friendly. Good for nettle rash.

My molton brown stays firmly in my ensuite and even DH isn't allowed to use it.

The new rhubarb and rose one is lovely.

Before I imposed my Sainsbury's Basics regime on the house, I used to bulk-buy Body Shop soaps when they were on special offer.

My favourites were coconut, almond, some kind of light brown one that I was shea butter, there might have been a sesame one - it was mustard-coloured.

I used to burn money . Though I'd never waste money on the fruity-smelling glycerine soaps because they don't even last as long as those poncey overpriced handwash bunch of arse.

Especially when people leave them dissolving in a small puddle of water on the edge of the sink instead of putting them somewhere dry and wiping them with loo -roll first--.

I never told anyone to do that last bit. I wanted to but realised I would have sounded mental so I just didn't buy them.

I've inherited it from my mum. She never used to buy Pears for the same reason.

You can't buy Molton Brown in poundshops or discount stores like quality save or similar. What you can buy is bayliss and Harding which accidentally on purpose looks very similar to MB. if you could buy don't you think we'd have been subjected to various crowing threads courtesy of various thrifty mners visiting various stores and posting various pictures of their hauls?

No I have definitely seen Molton Brown and not Bayliss and Harding. Although the shop I have seen it in does seem to sell things which have 'fallen off the back of a lorry' sometimes.

Yes it's all part of the scam, better to destroy luxury goods than ever sell them cheap.

Oh, for crying out loud everyone - I have posh, beautiful soap in my home (like others) - my other half is a tradesperson, working in people's homes and on building sites. He really couldn't give a fig about what he uses to wash his hands. I could give him cat poo in the bathroom, I doubt he would even notice.

It is not a big deal - these threads making an issue out of nothing are quite annoying

My friend's bathroom is kitted out with Molton Brown in all 3 bathrooms. Her husband was totally in the dark about what Molton Brown is until they were in a local department store one day and she handed over the soap and lotion for just one of the bathrooms and they asked for £32 (or similar). He exclaimed "HOW MUCH" as only a husband can and she just waved her hand and said "oh just ignore him please" as she entered her pin. They rowed about it for about a month and now he has his own bottle of Dove "to wash the kids hands with".

Though I suspect he still uses it himself - his hands look like he's never done an honest days work in his life

Forty years ago Molton Brown was a tiny hairdressers in South Molton Street, Mayfair, that specialised in dressing long hair a la Jerry Hall, who was their most famous client.

The fashion for hair changed and Central London rents sky-rocketed. So they got investment from venture capitalists and changed from doing hair to doing expensive toiletries that aren't that nice.

Bit like what Champneys did. Someone bought me some of their handwash and lotion for xmas.

It looks pretty in the downstairs loo but the wash is harsh and the lotion is thin. I wish he'd bought me a bottle of wine instead. Even if it stripped my gullet.

After all, that's what venture captilaists do

Bayliss and Harding

Much cheaper here. I got six bottles, different fragrances, including matching hand cream, for around £10 a few weeks back. It's nice enough and does the job effectively.

I wouldn't change it - they can help you use it up more quickly so you don't have to be subjected to the horrible drying effects of MB . Seriously, I find it so so drying, there are far better posh hand wash options, e.g., L'Occitane. I think Molton Brown is vastly overrated.

This will be boring for some of you, so apologies. But I'll post it in case anyone does have an interest in the ingredients.

Molton Brown products are cleverly marketed and not very good quality. They give me eczema. If you look at the ingredients lists, they are chock full of cheap chemicals and, quite often, very small amounts of natural ingredients. They play up the natural element on the packaging, but the natural ingredients come way down the list of ingredients.

The Naran Ji hand wash ingredients are as follows: Water (Aqua), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamide DEA, Propylene Glycol, Fragrance (Parfum), Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Glycerin, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Amyl Cinnamal, Eugenol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Hydroxycitronellal, Limonene, Linalool, Methylisothiazolinone, Phenoxyethanol, Citric Acid, PEG-18 Glyceryl Oleate/Cocoate, Sodium Chloride.

I don't know how many of you look into cosmetic ingredients before buying, but that list is shockingly cheap and nasty for the price.

Someone mentioned Liz Earle's handwash- that or Neal's Yard's one are similarly priced but without all the crap.

In summary, let the builders use it up, then buy one that isn't filled with chemical crap.

I make my own! With a bar of castile soap, water and a hand blender.

Cheap and not full of chemical shite.

My dad still uses Imperial Leather. I buy a fresh bar for every one of his visits.

I only use shower gel when someone gives it to me. Otherwise, it's soap all the way.

I love imperial leather soap. Reminds me of my grandma.

I prefer to use washing up liquid on my hands when I've been doing DIY, it gets through the grease and grime better than either Molton Brown or B&H soaps.

We use Bayliss and Harding here for posh soap. It's not tested on animals, which is important to us.
