I have two sons (6 & 4) who both have willies (as you would expect), now I also have dd (8 weeks) and I don't know what to call her bits. Obviously I have explained the proper names to the boys when they asked, in the same way they know that the proper name for their willy is penis, but I would prefer a friendlier term to use day to day!
Am I being crazy?
DH and I have had a conversation about it but cannot agree Smile.

My daughters and I call it vagina. It sounds a bit stern I admit, but I've never been a fan of flowery names for it!

Belmo · 11/04/2014 09:16

Dd is 2, she calls hers her gina. (Considered fanjo but think mil would have died!)

whitepuddingsupper · 11/04/2014 09:18

Round my way it's known as a flower.

trashcanjunkie · 11/04/2014 09:24

Well it's a tricky one isn't it? Penis/willies seems just fine for boys, but when it comes to vaginas.... I personally don't like fanny, which is what we were taught as kids. I think foof is what comes out of my mouth these days, but it seems terribly affected... I'm slightly at a loss, but as I have only had boys, I don't need to use the word that regularly day to day, so I have taught them vagina, but have used foof when in a situation with an erm... foof in it... (like if I've been looking after a little baby girl and we're changing her nappy and one of the boys asks what I'm doing, I'm 'wiping her foof' or whatever) In my opinion we need a word that's as good as willy.

SleepRefugee · 11/04/2014 09:26

Technically it would be vulva. The vagina is on the inside.
We haven't agreed on a non-silly, childish name for DD's (3) bits here either.

ilikebigbutts · 11/04/2014 09:31

Dh called his winkle and dd then started to call hers winkette. If the kids are happy with these names then I don't see the harm in calling them this. They know the proper anatomical terms and DS often delights in "punching Daddy's testicles" the minute he has arrived home from work.

Belini · 11/04/2014 09:31

My 2 yr old dd calls hers her naan. No idea where it came from.

hiddenhome · 11/04/2014 09:31

We have willies, balls and fairies in our house. I will use anatomically correct names if ds2 needs an in depth physiological explanation about something though.

Ds2 used to call his 'bits' 'noonduds' for some reason, when he was a toddler. I don't know where that came from, but it always made me laugh Grin

bobot · 11/04/2014 09:35

We say 'girly bits' and she'll learn the biological terms when she's older, just as her brother will for his willy.

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 11/04/2014 09:35

Bits. She's 3. Dd2 is 15mths. They both know where I mean easily.

They both wash their bits and bobs in the bath. (Pits, tum, legs etc)

Dd1 knows bits 'a la' nspcc PANTS campaign are hers and hers alone.

Another year and I'll introduce some proper names sometimes. I hate a toddler saying vagina no matter how accurate (which it never is as usually they mean vulva but the fecking weirdos here think it's normal)

FYI here is not RL.

trashcanjunkie · 11/04/2014 09:40

oops, yes you are correct sleep and in fact, recently I read 'a very touching book' by Jan somebody or other, with my dts who're nine. It's all about bodies and types of touching. In it there's a section on the names of body parts and the book asks the children reading it to encourage the grown up they're reading with to say the proper names of the parts of the body all together three times in succession. It was incredibly difficult to keep a straight face whilst repeating 'vulva, vulva vulva' in time with twin boys speaking in a weird 'twinny' monotone Confused

Am pissing myself at your ds punching daddy's testicles likebigbutts Grin

FracturedViewOfLife · 11/04/2014 09:48

I don't have any DC but I personally call the whole area my vagina. I know it isn't correct but it has been used for so long it is a hard habit to get out of. It does seem easier for boys as willies just seems right.

Sallystyle · 11/04/2014 09:49

vagina/vulva

ebwy · 11/04/2014 09:50

My vulva. My 3 year old says "am boy, have a penis. Mammy a girl, have bulva" because sometimes he has issues with V at the start of words coming out as B. I don't use euphemisms for it.

Which caused all kinds of" fun" in nursery when he told a TA "tried to pee but my penis didn't work!" and several other kids heard and started demanding loudly for the TA to explain " What 'Peeee-nissss'?"

Stripytop · 11/04/2014 10:00

My dc's know all the proper names now, but when they were little everything (male or female) was referred to as the widgies. Ds had side-widgies for a bit Confused but not any more, it seems.

MzPixielated · 11/04/2014 10:03

DD2yrs - foof, DS6yrs - winky. I'm a bit twee lol
I call mine a minge purely because it makes dp die a little inside cringe. Grin

QueenieRae · 11/04/2014 10:07

My friend's little girls (who have recently been asking the "where do babies come from?") call their lady bits their "Loola".

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/04/2014 10:12

I use vulva as it's the only universally recognised word for the area which is not crude/rude (fanny, cunt, etc)

ACatCalledColin · 11/04/2014 10:39

I call mine my foof or my fanny. That wouldn't be appropriate for kids though I don't think.

When I was a little girl though it was my "fairy" or my "bessie" Blush

The word vulva makes me cringe and I don't know why. Vagina doesn't sound bad but vulva is just so ugly sounding.

SparklySocks · 11/04/2014 10:44

Foof Grin But that's reserved for DP and said jokingly. If DS asks a question it's vagina.

OldCatLady · 11/04/2014 10:46

As a child mine was a "mini"...my mum apparently didn't tell me this, I just decided. Done kids I know call a penis a p-p and vulva is a vuvu (voo-voo), which I think is fine.

I've heard: flower, foof, bunny, lala, luna, vanny, bobble.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 11/04/2014 10:47

I say vagina. YES I KNOW IT ISN'T BIOLOGICALLY CORRECT but it is commonly understood to be an inclusive term for female genitalia.

I taught DS(5) to say vagina. But he calls his genitalia a 'willy'

There just seems to be a lack of a commonly understood, child friendly widely used colloquialism for vagina in the way that willy stands for penis.

Pipbin · 11/04/2014 10:49

Do make sure that she is aware of vulva or vagina though.
I had a child in nursery who banged her self in her vulva and it took a long time to understand what she was telling me as she called it her mimi or something like that. 'I've hurt my mimi' didn't give me much of a clue about the problem!

wheresthelight · 11/04/2014 10:50

We refer to dd's as her girly bits too.

Dss (10) calls his a willy, he knows the proper name for everything but he feels more comfortable with it.

Dsd (8) calls hers "her lady bits" against knowd the right words but chooses to call them this.

We aren't going to force them and risk embarrassing them

TheKangaroo · 11/04/2014 10:51

Just 'bits' tbh.
