I have two sons (6 & 4) who both have willies (as you would expect), now I also have dd (8 weeks) and I don't know what to call her bits. Obviously I have explained the proper names to the boys when they asked, in the same way they know that the proper name for their willy is penis, but I would prefer a friendlier term to use day to day!
Am I being crazy?
DH and I have had a conversation about it but cannot agree Smile.

Dd calls her genitals her shape, don't know where she got that from.

When she is older I will tell her the correct terms.

PiratePanda · 11/04/2014 16:17

Bits or genitals for everyday use, pubis, vulva or vagina if it's necessary to be accurate for medical purposes.

DS has bits or willy, but he also knows penis and testicles.

front bottom, to go with back bottom.

I now know that vagina isn't correct (having thought it was for years) but outside of MN I don't think it's common knowledge so I'm avoiding any 'v' word altogether for the mo!

Moomoo Grin

Front bottom when I'm talking to children

Janet the rest of the time :)

Dd1 started using Mini, so we've all followed. She knows the correct terms, and is pretty clued up on bodily functions and reproduction as I'm determined to answer her questions properly.

I never understand how people could be confused by a child using a different word for something - lots of children mispronounce things or use different words for all sorts and the meaning is usually understood. It's about using a term they are happy with. Dd chose Mini, I therefore use Mini. It's like in nursing, if the patient talks about 'poo' you don't refer back to 'faecal matter'.

Personally I would cringe with embarrassment at using any of these fluffy terms (they all sound likes names for small dogs Grin) but each to their own I guess. I asked DD about it and she agreed, but then of course shes's never known anything different.

Polonius · 11/04/2014 19:22

Dd uses lady bits, and vagina in the same way that DS uses willy and penis, or that we all use kneecap and patella.

Nothing wrong with having a colloquial term as long as they know the biology too.

Polonius · 11/04/2014 19:23

Or rather, vulva and vagina I should say. Dd knows the different between inside and out.
