It's just bonkers
It's not real
Yet thousands and thousands go to the matches
and my son's LOVE it

I don't get it either, DH watches it sometimes and you can see it's so fake and there's no way someone could take a real hit over the head with a metal chair and get straight back up with no blood and seemingly no pain. DH says he knows it's fake and he likes the storylines, it's like me watching the soaps which I can sort of see from that point of view but the wrestling bit just seems repetitive and daft to me.

Owllady · 10/04/2014 14:11

Yes, it's the daftness I don't understand. All that play acting. Them shouting at one another
All the people screaming in the crowd Confused

But yes, I watch emmerdale too :o

I love it! It's like watching pantomime!
hero's. villains. strong men in small pants. what not to like!

it is my guilty pleasure. no one in real life knows I'm hooked!

WeeClype · 10/04/2014 16:00

I loved Hulk Hogan growing up

and the Undertaker

chocchips · 10/04/2014 16:01

I don't get it either. My DP watches it 'because everyone's allowed a guilty pleasure'.

It becomes more bearable when a nice looking one comes on ...

Gruntled · 10/04/2014 16:01

Hulk Hogan has never grown up!

fluffyraggies · 10/04/2014 16:07

When i was a kid my nan would watch it when she babysat me. She believed every bit of the ''baddy beats up goody unfairly, goody must surely be maimed for life - and yet! Goody rallies, and goes on to triumph over baddy just before the end! Yay!'' Grin - and would shake her fists at the tv and spill her tea at the height of the excitement. I loved it!

When i found out it was all put on i was very Confused and a bit Hmm

Now i think of it as panto for adults. I haven't watched it for years, but can see why it would be a laugh for a night out.

toolonglurking · 10/04/2014 16:49

Ohhh, Britt "The Hit Man" Hart - I loved him in my youth!

Owllady · 10/04/2014 17:16

But the men in the crowd take it so serious
My son is twelve and told me this afternoon the undertaker had lost his first match ever and someone else had died and someone else had some sort of disorder where he didn't stop growing
And
He had this poster of Randy Orton on his wall fir years doing some sort of jump and I swear you could see his scrotum either side of his very tight polished pants
Confused

TheNightIsDark · 10/04/2014 17:19

I loved The Rock and Triple H. And Chris Jericho.

My brother used to watch it. We used to beat the hell out of each other trying to copy the stunts.

shakinstevenslovechild · 10/04/2014 17:20

Your ds has a poster of Randy Orton on his wall and you can't see the appeal of wrestling Grin

I love it, it's a bit like a soap really, storylines, people leaving, shock comebacks, heartache, laughs, gorgeous men in tiny pants some people do take it very seriously though.

ddubsgirl · 10/04/2014 17:21

its scripted but like hell would I get in a ring with them! its a sport soap opera sadly stunts do go wrong Sad owen hart snapped his neck and died in the ring

MrsPresley · 10/04/2014 17:36

I read yesterday that The Ultimate Warrior (for those that remember him) has passed away Sad

Owllady · 10/04/2014 17:44

I think that is who my son was on about mrspresley

I love it as well. Mainly because I like to see half naked muscular men rolling round together. And I love watching men fight. Wrestlers do it in a safe way, unlike boxers. MMA is boring.
People in the audience take it seriously because they get caught up in it, just as people get caught up in a film or a tv series, or even big brother (the height of boring to me). Not because they think it's real.Everyone over the age of 5 or so knows it 's 'staged'.
People just like different things OP.

MrsDeanAmbrose · 10/04/2014 18:00

I love it (hence the NN). Yes, there are lots of grown men who take it quite seriously (I know a lot of them as I go to a lot of shows) but that doesn't mean they think it's real, there are lots of people who view it almost as an art form, in terms of how matches are structured and performed.

Me, I like the very very lovely looking men (and women) and find the storylines more entertaining than soaps.

Also, wrestling fans are a really nice community for the most part and almost all of the wrestlers I've ever met have been lovely and started out as fans themselves so are really appreciative of support.

SecretNutellaFix · 10/04/2014 18:04

I attended a WWE show when it was in Cardiff a few years back. It was a great night out- DH is the wrestling fan.

IIRC, one of the matches had TripleH in, and one of the other contenders got a hold wrong and nearly de-pantsed him completely in the ring. You could tell he wore a thong when the fake tan was applied/ he lay onn the sunbed.

JonSnowsPout · 10/04/2014 18:18

Chris jericho and Edge were my first proper crushes.

I wanted to be Trish Stratton so badly.

My boys love it, cheering the heros and boo'ing the baddies.
Rather this tgen all the fisney shite

Ive been to wrestlemania through work and its a great show. Proper panto.

JonSnowsPout · 10/04/2014 18:19

Disney shit

definatlylosingmysanity · 10/04/2014 18:43

Yes the story lines are fake and matches pre arranged but the moves they do are all real and they do often get hurt.

I have a friend who used to work the british circuits and the injuries hes had is horrendous.

My kids love it they all want to be wrestlers including my dd1 whos 5 they know not to copy and I use their love it to my advantage ie well john cena/roman reigns etc eat their 5 a day.

They get into it just like many of my adult friends get into the soaps .

TheNightIsDark · 10/04/2014 18:43

Oh and the Hardy Boys. I wanted to be Lita still wouldn't mind the figure

PorkPieandPickle · 10/04/2014 18:49

I love Shaun Michaels and Randy Orton wrestling :D

complexnumber · 10/04/2014 18:49

It's just pantomime for 'grown ups'.

I haven't let it concern me for a long time.

However I do remember furious arguments with BF when we were aged about 7 and it was a regular feature of 'World of Sport', he thought it was genuine.

But millions watched it.
