Me and OH live in a private apartment block and atm the intercom is broken so postman was given a key by landlord all was well.until 3 months ago when we got a new postman. this postman refuses to use the key given to him i emailed royal mail and he said he "lost it" he ranted at me and OH when we went to collect our post while he was there about having a dustbin for junk mail so landlord provided a bucket for him to put his precious junk mail into and now he has started shoving letters under the main door instead of coming in and posting them into our individual post boxes and when he did post them today he posted them all in the wrong boxes and let half scattered on top of the boxes including ones for 203 about ten miles down the road from us also he doesn't like posting packages and parcels and leaves delivery cards in there place AIBU ?? where does royal mail find these loons Angry Sad Confused

Why doesn't the landlord just fix the intercom?

broodyhen2014 · 09/04/2014 20:34

The landlord has tried we were talking to them tonight apparently and the woman who owns the flats who they work for is a right stroppy mare the intercom isn't the right colour apparently so it got sent back another has be ordered but they cant say when it is going to be here !! needless to say i wish we were in the position to pack up and leave still saving for a bond on a house though Sad

I think hating all of Royal Mail is unfair. Just this one postman.

broodyhen2014 · 09/04/2014 21:39

ive heard of many other postmen like him aswell though the service royal mail provide is just shoddy overpriced and ridiculous on a whole wish there was an alternative

elahrairahforprimeminister · 09/04/2014 22:24

Why do postmen now want a dustbin for junk mail?

Why can't they just chuck it away at the sorting office rather than carry it around?

broodyhen2014 · 09/04/2014 23:19

i know i laughed when i heard the landlord tell us about it they post one or two leaflet's into the letter box no letters though as i said before they get shoved on top Angry i think they get paid to give people junkmail

'junk' mail is paid for to be delivered, rm have a remit to deliver everything they are paid to deliver whether you like the item or not.

blame the junk mail provider not rm

libertytrainers · 09/04/2014 23:24

it's illegal for rm to just chuck mail away and who are they to say if it's junk or not?

route1 · 09/04/2014 23:38

Of course they get paid to 'give' people junk mail - it's largely funding rm's letter business these days and if there was an alternative delivery company for letters it would no doubt be a huge part of their business as well.

elahrairahforprimeminister · 09/04/2014 23:49

junk' mail is paid for to be delivered, rm have a remit to deliver everything they are paid to deliver whether you like the item or not.

That's fine.

But OP's postman asked for a bin so he could chuck it away.

we went to collect our post while he was there about having a dustbin for junk mail so landlord provided a bucket for him

If he's chucking it out anyway why not just do it at the sorting office?

Confused

Is that why they often ignore 'no junk mail' signs?

broodyhen2014 · 09/04/2014 23:59

Exactly last week when he just shoved the mail under the door there was mine and OH's bank statement's in the pile half under the door for any passer by too see and steal ffs all our bank detail's on them all or earning and income as they were our 6 month paper statements with about 10 sheets worth of info in each !! Angry i was furious took OH hours to calm me down wasn't nice for either of us i have emailed royal mail over and over again about this and postmen and their junkmail and cheek of asking for -demanding- a bin to put it in and all I've had back is there mandatory reply email saying they will look into it .... yh right

Regarding junk mail from Royal Mail.

RM are legally obliged to deliver mail as addressed and paid for by the customer.

The Mail Preference Service can reduce the amount of junk mail you receive.... eventually (expect to wait three months before seeing any appreciable difference).

But and this is a big but, RM are cynically and deliberately circumventing the MPS.

Every postal address in the UK is, by default, opted in to the 'Door to Door' service which enables you to be targeted for unaddressed marketing mail (flyers, leaflets and those big red Virgin Media envelopes etc). MPS can only prevent addressed marketing mail.

See what they did there? Clever huh?

Now, to opt out of receiving this junk, you have to request a form from RM, which you then have to complete and sign.

RM will not stop sending you unaddressed junk without your signed 'permission' to do so.

You can not opt out by telephone.

You can not opt out by email.

You have unknowingly been opted in to a 'service' without you permission (signed or otherwise).

RM use the 'legally bound to deliver mail as addressed' excuse to deliver unaddressed fishing marketing.

RM are not legally bound to accept or solicit contracts for these mass unaddressed mailings.

BTW, if you do fill out the forms and give RM 'permission' not to send you junk, it expires after two years.

My DP is a postman so I take umbrage with your comments about hating the whole of Royal Mail.

He sounds like a crap postie but RM do have reasons (most of which have been listed above) for doing what they do. They might not like it but it needs done - chucking away junk mail is a sacking offence.

windchime · 22/09/2014 14:46

I hate UPS for very similar reasons, so YANBU.

LineRunner · 22/09/2014 14:48

You need to complain to Royal Mail about this particular postman.

steppemum · 22/09/2014 15:04

I feel your pain over this man., but we have had amazing postman, who have gone above and beyond.
Our current postman is lovely and helpful.

please don't blame the whole PO for one bad postperson.

justmuddlingalong · 22/09/2014 15:14

I heard someone at the door once. Upon opening it, there was the postman trying to scratch/write our door number on the letterbox! It was to make it easier for him when delivering the post. I pointed out the 6 inch high number on the window above the door. Fud.

RedToothBrush · 22/09/2014 15:53

My postie is awesome. He goes out of his way for us and is always friendly.

YABU.

If the only way a business can stay afloat is by utilising the tactics detailed in m4tth3w's post then they really need to just die quietly.

I confirm the details as correct btw, I have been through the nightmare that is 'opting out' myself.
