To ask if you know what this bug/virus is

This is my first post on AIBU and I realise I probably am being unreasonable to post here rather than on the health board, but I'm feeling a bit desperate and need the traffic.

I have been blessed with a super efficient immune system, which means I very rarely get ill and, if I do catch a cold, I can usually shake it off very quickly. I know the difference between flu and a cold - I haven't had flu for over 30 years, but I recall how bad it was. However, I do have some sort of bug at the moment, which has knocked me sideways and I wonder if anyone has experienced anything like this recently. I am supposed to be taking my kids to see my elderly parents in a few days time, and I cannot risk them catching this.

On Friday, I was working at home and was fine until about 2pm, when the most overwhelming tiredness came upon me. Within a matter of minutes, I was in a pretty poor state - terrible headache (worse at the bottom of my skull at the back, but coming over my ears, causing hissing noises, and over the top of my head, causing a heaviness in my eyes), very bad backache, particularly at the bottom of my spine, and chills. I couldn't get warm, even after getting into bed with my clothes on, so I ran a hot bath. Whilst it was filling up, I had goosebumps upon goosebumps and started to shake.

I warmed up only when I was almost completely submerged in the bath and then managed to sleep for a couple of hours. When I woke, I felt worse. My symptoms now included muscle pain and abdominal pain, so it felt a lot like the beginnings of flu, but there were no cold symptoms and no D&V symptoms. These symptoms have continued on and off until today. The nights are bad, as I can't sleep a great deal and I am bathed in sweat. Oh, and I am also incredibly hungry and thirsty. I must be the only person on the planet who can feel this ill and put weight ON!

At the moment, I don't feel too bad, provided I don't exert myself in any way. All the symptoms have subsided a little, but I feel incredibly weak - like I can't raise myself off the sofa. I hate this. I lost money on Sunday as I am self employed and couldn't go in to do work for my client, even though I had spent ages preparing for it. Moving forward, I have a To Do List as long as my arm and I can't sit around.

Does anyone recognise these symptoms please? My guess is it must be contagious, but I would really like to know how long you need to be clear of something like this before it is safe to mix with others, particularly elderly people.

I've had this since last Friday and still feel knackered. I slept for most of the day yesterday while DH watched dcs. My head is still sore today.

TheEmpress · 07/04/2014 10:54

Any spots?

Chicken pox often presents itself with extreme tiredness/ cold symptoms about 48 hours before the spots appear.

TallyGrenshall · 07/04/2014 10:57

It sounds similar to a virus I had. I felt like I'd been beaten, every bit of me hurt. I was back at work on the 5th day still feeling rough but bearable and was fine after 7 days.

DS had it first, again he was back to school on the 5th day and fine after 7.

It's frickin awful, you have my sympathies Brew

Artyjools · 07/04/2014 10:59

Sorry you are feeling the same way ophitaurus. It's miserable, isn't it? Does anyone else in your family have any symptoms? Everyone else here is fine.

No, Empress, no spots. I know I had chicken pox as a child and all my kids had it too, so I think I must be immune now.

Artyjools · 07/04/2014 11:00

Ok, thanks Tally. Looks like the trip to my folks will be cancelled. My kids will be gutted.

LadyRabbit · 07/04/2014 11:04

OP I too have this at the moment, exactly the symptoms you describe and especially the terrible nights. DS had chicken pox 10 days ago but I haven't had any spots and presumed I was immune having had it as a kid.

It must be a bug then. Relieved I'm not the only one but feel bad that you're feeling rubbish too.

Thanks
pod3030 · 07/04/2014 11:05

I've had this , am just in the tiredness/labrynthitus stage. Dr said there are a new set of viruses going around that no one has any immunity to, so the population is being knocked for six. She's had her surgery full of 'em.
I am in week three, if i over exert myself i feel worse. I am a lone parent, work from home, so much to do but just have had to surrender.
Dr said water, paracetamol, lots of blueberries and high anti oxidant food.

Artyjools · 07/04/2014 11:14

Thank you LadyRabbit and Pod. So sorry you are going through this too. We need a group hug by the sounds of it!

Pod - you are in week 3! OMG - poor you! I'm going to surrender to it too. The rest of the family are already in a state of shock as they so rarely see me like this. The kids are off school so it's pay back time - they can wait on me for a change!

Sounds like you've got flu to me.

stivesholiday · 07/04/2014 15:54

Do you have a very sore throat? Are your glands up? Do you have a funny tongue? My husband had all your symptoms last week, plus the ones I've added and he had scarlet fever. It is not normally an adult illness but it is coming back with a vengeance and if you didn't get it as a child (which you said you weren't ill much) then it could very well be that.

Otherwise, there are some really terrible viruses going around.

Sorry you are feeling unwell.

As a tip, keep the 2 paracetemol and ibruprophen up every 4 hours because this will keep the aches and pains and temperature at bay. If it goes too long between your doses you will feel crap. It is better to keep them on a steady flow of every 4 hours.

Also Lots and Lots of fluids to flush the bug through your system.

gemdrop84 · 07/04/2014 16:00

We had this a few weeks back. I started with headache and nausea followed by chills and awful aching all over. Felt thoroughly worn out for ages after.

Badvoc · 07/04/2014 16:01

My ds2 is on week 3 of this :(
I feel dreadful but have 2 dc off school ill so having to stay downstairs and "parent"
It sucks :(

meddie · 07/04/2014 16:01

The headache/backache and not feeling like you can get warm followed by sweating and shaking are all symptoms you get with a raised temperature. Paracetamol or Ibuprofen will bring your temp down and ease those symptoms a bit.

Goldmandra · 07/04/2014 16:05

As a tip, keep the 2 paracetemol and ibruprophen up every 4 hours because this will keep the aches and pains and temperature at bay.

Be careful. You can only take eight Paracetamol a day so that's two every six hours.

Artyjools · 07/04/2014 22:32

Thank you for your posts and so sorry so many have similar symptoms. No sore throat or any of the runny nose/coughing that you usually get with flu. I still feel very grim. I've spent yet another day mostly lying down. Any sort of effort makes me feel utterly depleted. I'm really concerned this could go on for weeks!

OP posts:
Artyjools · 07/04/2014 22:36

Badvoc -it is awful having to care for others when you are feeling rough yourself Brew. There are 5 of us here and I gave a feeling this is just the start....

I am just getting better after falling ill three weeks ago; same sort of symptoms - fever, aching, cold despite being fully clothed in bed with heavy quilt, central heating and full sun. sore neck, aching limbs, etc. No runny nose or sneezing but sore throat developed later and am still coughing now. Returned to work on day 5 and was utterly exhausted after teaching even one lesson.
Can't remember the last time I was ill; I rarely get colds and can't remember ever having 'flu.

Lovesabadboy · 08/04/2014 00:02

Arty - I am so sorry that you have felt so rough.

About a week ago I woke up with terribly achy legs and all of last week my whole body/muscles/joints have been aching to the point of making me feel sicky.
I have had headache and earache on and off all week, plus the chills and going to the loo to wee an awful lot.
No cough, cold, sore throat or sneezing.
Like you, though, I have not lost my appetite and have actually eaten a bit more to keep from feeling sick.
I have fallen asleep every night on the sofa and even fell asleep at my desk upright in my office chair! (I work from home luckily).

Today, I have felt very slightly better in terms of the aches and pains but have had a very sore neck and have had to have the heating on all day.
I have been eating paracetamol like sweets for a week (I can't take Ibuprofen as I am allergic to asprin)

I haven't been to the doctor as I always give these things time to go on their own.
I am hoping it is on it's way out, but I have no idea how each day is going to turn out.

I hope you start to feel better soon, Arty.

Innocentbystander01 · 08/04/2014 00:07

Dp has had it for 4 days and due to having a disability and weakened immune System he has now developed a chest infection.
2 dads have it / have had it one took a week to recover the youngest just 4 is still ill a week later.
It's awful the school I work in has so many staff and pupils off with it and the GP I saw with dd over the weekend said. He has seen lots of this virus over the past month.

MargotLovedTom · 08/04/2014 00:10

I had a really debilitating bug too, peaked last Saturday when I spent the entire day in bed, freezing cold despite being wrapped up and I could feel the heat radiating off me. Was so sore and achey, and even my skin was painful to the touch. I was also ravenously hungry like OP.

It started with a sore throat on the Thurs, the fluey symptoms subsided on the Sunday and it then developed into a more usual cold, with runny nose, cough and tight chest.

Horrendous.

gamerchick · 08/04/2014 00:10

I'm not liking what i'm reading. There are new bugs about?

gamerchick · 08/04/2014 00:11

Sounds bloody horrible OP.. really hope you're on the mend soon.

It's shit like this that makes me curse medised being took off the market.. that one was the only thing that helps with full blown flu.

MargotLovedTom · 08/04/2014 00:12

That was Sat before Mother's Day when it peaked. I'm only just feeling normal(ish) now.

MargotLovedTom · 08/04/2014 00:14

Goldmandra - paracetamol every four hours usually takes into account people being asleep for 8 hours or thereabouts.

Innocentbystander01 · 08/04/2014 00:15

It's frightening me a little bit as dd is so tiny she's losing weight that she could do without losing she wants to eat but then pukes. Her voice hurts (her words) and both dds cries over leg pain.
