To get the rage at 3/4 length sleeve jumpers

Orangeanddemons · 07/04/2014 10:18

Why why? If I'm buying a jumper to keep me warm l want full length sleeves to cover my arms. Why don't my lower arms count or need keeping warm? Are they different in some way?

I reckon it's a cost thing.

YABU. I'm a sleeve pusher-upper too. I don't see the point of 3/4-sleeve coats though, so I'll give you half a YANBU point for that.

AnotherSpinningFuckingRainbow · 07/04/2014 10:52

You can show off bracelets or wristwatches in a 3/4 sleeved jumper though.

EverythingsDozy · 07/04/2014 10:56

I don't think 3/4 jumpers are entirely functionless. I don't get cold wrists, I get cold bingo wings, so a 3/4 jumper is just right for me! Grin

chillychicken · 07/04/2014 11:04

I HATE 3/4 length sleeves with a passion. If I'm wearing a jumper, it's because it's cold so why do I want to expose 1/4 of my arms to the cold weather? I don't.

The only thing worse than jumpers with 3/4 sleeves? Jumper dresses with short sleeves. W.T.A.F?

Daisy17 · 07/04/2014 11:12

Definitely with you, OP. They make my arms itch, and feel really weird if you want to put anything over the top. Long sleeves can be three quarter length if you want them to be, push them up, but no amount of frantic stretching will make a three quarter length sleeve cover your wrists......

ouryve · 07/04/2014 11:14

I have short arms, so they suit me just fine.

ouryve · 07/04/2014 11:16

Fingerless gloves are handy when you need to be constantly handling stuff, eg coins or phones. Or playing musical instruments in the cold.

namechangeno1 · 07/04/2014 11:17

what about this?

TheEmpress · 07/04/2014 11:18

YANBU I like extra long sleeves as I have long arms. I want the choice of having them long or pushing them up.

rootypig · 07/04/2014 11:18

YANBU. Three quarter length sleeves (and trousers since we're here Grin) are dreadful - impractical and dowdy anyway - and should be banned.

rootypig · 07/04/2014 11:19

namechange that made my eyes itch

LadyVetinari · 07/04/2014 11:20

Orangeanddemons - I agree with your "aesthetics follow function" point, but I think it's important to remember that different weights of jumper have different functions. A thick, heavy jumper might well look ridiculous with 3/4 sleeves because it's supposed to keep a lot of heat in to protect against cold. In contrast, a light, clingy jumper with 3/4 sleeves may well make visual and practical sense because it's meant to "go with" more summery clothes and make you a bit more comfortable in changeable or awkward weather.

I sometimes like thin, clingy 3/4 sleeve jumpers in spring and summer (for when it's warmish but breezy), in icy or jewel tones. The sleeves don't get in the way, they don't make it difficult to wear jewellery, and the exposed skin balances out the heavy-ish fabric so I don't look too wintry.

I also have a cropped denim jacket with 3/4 sleeves which is awesome with long dresses or floaty trousers and vest tops for the same reason.

BillyBanter · 07/04/2014 11:21

They are meant to make you look slimmer, or something.

3/4 length warm clothes annoy me too.

You can push sleeves up but you can't pull 3/4 sleeves down.

Whathaveiforgottentoday · 07/04/2014 11:21

Can't stand them and they look silly if you have long sleeve top underneath it. (I know I should check the jumper and top go but sometimes just grab a jumper and leave in the morning and don't realise until its too late).

LangenFlugelHappleHoff · 07/04/2014 11:23

I'm tall and wish sleeves came in extra long sizes.

3/4 length make me look like I'm wearing my child's jumper.

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 07/04/2014 11:24

YABU. I love 3/4 length sleeves. Full length sleeves make me feel claustraphobic (as do high necklines tbh).

PaulinesPen · 07/04/2014 11:26

I cant be doing with 3/4 sleeves. They're neither one thing or the other. Annoying.

WillieWaggledagger · 07/04/2014 11:32

i like them - i like a layering style and wearing long-sleeved tops under 3/4-sleeved jumpers

WillieWaggledagger · 07/04/2014 11:32

i do like long sleeves too - have lots of cosy jumpers and cardigans - but not exclusively

OnlyLovers · 07/04/2014 11:33

I like them. You don't have to worry about the sleeves not being long enough.

I only wear 3/4 length sleeves in lighter weight fabrics, when the weather isn't so cold, or with a top underneath that I want to show.

t3rr3gl35 · 07/04/2014 11:40

I like 3/4 length sleeves in jumpers and cardigans but was taught by my grandmother (who knew about these things Wink) that I should never wear 3/4 length sleeves in jackets or coats. Can't for the life of me remember her reasoning but do remember that it seemed perfectly acceptable at the time. Smile

zipzap · 07/04/2014 11:49

Another one who hates 3/4 sleeves with a passion - and I'm an ergonomist so definitely believe in function first and then getting the aesthetics right on top.

I can just about see that some people might like them in lighter fabrics in the summer - but certainly not in the proportions that the shops make them. I reckon there are a lot more people out there who would prefer to have longer sleeved versions they could push the sleeves up on than be stuffed with cold wrists and 3/4 length sleeves. But normal jumpers or heavy weight ones - definitely need long sleeves.

And sorry, really don't like long sleeves poking out from under 3/4 sleeves - just looks silly. Or that you couldn't find a proper long sleeved top so you just bought a 3/4 length sleeve top instead and and have to wear something underneath to keep your wrists warm...

It's not just jumpers though - it's jackets too - why on earth do they make jackets with 3/4 length sleeves or short sleeves? Arrggghhh.

Another pet peeve along these lines - If I'm in M&S just wanting to buy ordinary socks for me, they just have one size. If I go upstairs to the Mens department, men have lots of different size variations - approximately every 2 shoes sizes and there's a new sock size, so easy to get a sock to fit really comfortably. Women - any size between 3 and 8 you are expected to wear the same size. And bigger than 8 - no chance. I'm not talking their 'fashion' sock here where I can see they might not sell zillions so want to cut back to enhance profit margins. But bog standard black or navy socks for example or basic sports sock that are sold all the time - why could they not at least make a couple of sizes or even size them like they do the mens socks so that it is possible to get a good fit!

sorry. rants over now!

lottiegarbanzo · 07/04/2014 11:55

I like them, they suit me.

Only good when worn as a top, or over a suitable shirt, not as part of a layered up, keeping warm outfit, obv.

SaucyJack · 07/04/2014 11:58

YABU. Nowt worse than sleeves dragging the marge when you're trying to make a sandwich.

Goblinchild · 07/04/2014 12:00

'The cornerstones of good design are aesthetics v function . A 3/4 length sleeve jumper is not functional IMO.'

I like them, as a primary teacher they are perfect for not getting in the way when you are modelling things, dunking your hands into stuff, art and craft activities and the hundred other things in my day that would get my wrists soggy or dirty
In my 50s, I hate sleeveless summer dresses. They look vile on me.
Fashion designers are an odd lot really, you must disagree with each other all the time. Grin
