Im watching Louis Theroux program and over in the USA they have an app to search for sex offenders in their area.

Why do the UK not follow their lead!! Very scary especially if you have children Angry

I have a sex offender in my street and didnt find out he had been charged with sex offences for 2 years.

This man lives over 2 hedges from me and walks about the street thinking he owns it. Has a real bad attitude. grrr makes my blood boil

Semantics, Gin. Definition of Database:

"a structured set of data that is accessible in various ways"

So its been compiled from newspapers by pearl clutching pedo hunters, but I thought the OP might wanna get busy?

WorraLiberty · 06/04/2014 22:01

Imagine as well if your brother/ BIL was a sex offender.

Would you be ok with your kids being bullied mercilessly at school because their Uncle is on the 'nonce app'?

Because no doubt that's what would happen...and you'd probably come in for the cold shoulder and name calling too.

Your lives could be made a misery due to something you have no control over.

Big difference between being a paedophile and being on the sex offenders register.

You can be classed as a sex offender for drunkenly exposing yourself on a night out or pooing on a cash machine.

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 06/04/2014 22:05

Again, OP, what would you DO with this information? Form a lynch mob?

midwifeandmum · 06/04/2014 22:05

For goodness sake. Im talking about paedophiles not some dirty old man exposing his jangly bits to women. I DONT want to know where he stays lol

Nicknacky · 06/04/2014 22:05

Now you are sounding hysterical. That's why it isn't a good idea to have addresses publicised.

WestmorlandSausage · 06/04/2014 22:05

step dad... so not 'stranger danger' then OP

ImperialBlether · 06/04/2014 22:06

One click on that website and there is a link to another site slagging off Madeline McCann's mother. Whoever posted that link should be ashamed of themselves.

Joules68 · 06/04/2014 22:07

Oh don't be so hysterical op!!

Very sad a child had that happen. But it changes nothing. Of course they have to live somewhere!!

WestmorlandSausage · 06/04/2014 22:07

OP I think you are doing a very good job of demonstrating why it wouldn't be a good idea for the general public to know the addresses of sex offenders.

midwifeandmum · 06/04/2014 22:07

jonsnow

I think id lose my registration and be jailed if I formed a linch mob...

But id bloody move to a paedo-clean street

FreudiansSlipper · 06/04/2014 22:07

well the option is not there for them to be locked away forever and never will be

we have far too many people who like to make trouble not because they are fighting for victims but because they like to harm others

so how indeed will it be helpful

there are so many that have not been convicted and sadly are unlikely too, attitudes are changing we discuss these matters more in the open and encourage children to have autonomy over their own body this is the best way to protect them

Joules68 · 06/04/2014 22:08

Paedophiles....... Do you know the difference between paedophiles and sex offender?

paedo-clean street

What a ridiculous thing to think, let alone type.

bearleftmonkeyright · 06/04/2014 22:11

I think watching the program had changed my.perception of the usefulness of knowing where sex offenders are. There were heart breaking stories, particularly the woman. It's not about sympathy more how do we best deal with the issue of keeping children safe and housing and rehabilitating convicted sex offenders.

Wafflenose · 06/04/2014 22:11

Oh wow. I came on this thread expecting to be in the VAST minority, but I was very wrong.

I have two little girls.

I do not and would not want to know where these people live. My DH works very hard in a hostel, helping to educate and rehabilitate many sex offenders (amongst other things). The vast majority go on to live normal, quiet lives, with not a whiff of trouble. They have a right to go on with their lives.

Like everyone else, I just keep a close eye on my kids. We only have a front garden, and I can see them playing through the lounge or kitchen window. I've just started letting the 8 year old walk herself home from school (5 minutes) and if she were overdue, I'd walk down and get her myself. Both know not to speak to strangers, and to make a big scene if a stranger ever made them feel uncomfortable, and so on.

Nicknacky · 06/04/2014 22:12

Midwife. Unfortunately I have to look after victims of sex crime all too frequently, particularly in the immediate aftermath of a crime. Yes, you are being hysterical.

You probably deliver the babies of sex offenders more often than you realise.

gordyslovesheep · 06/04/2014 22:15

you sound completely hysterical - and you wont answer any points

you have yet to explain how it will protect children from none convicted offenders or how you protect them now?

What exactly would you do differently if you knew?

I am a 'victim' - I still think you are being completely unreasonable and irrational

midwifeandmum · 06/04/2014 22:15

lol. Its so easy to get the claws out here!!! My goodness. I thought I had a degree in bitchiness pmsl.

Some valium needed here before some mentalists explode with anger.

Calm down. Breath. No neef to go in for the attack.

Joules
