To feel we should have the right to know where sex offenders live

Im watching Louis Theroux program and over in the USA they have an app to search for sex offenders in their area.

Why do the UK not follow their lead!! Very scary especially if you have children Angry

I have a sex offender in my street and didnt find out he had been charged with sex offences for 2 years.

This man lives over 2 hedges from me and walks about the street thinking he owns it. Has a real bad attitude. grrr makes my blood boil

Tatty, you know that website isn't an official one? I've discussed it on another forum with a woman who "moderates" it. It's information taken from newspapers etc.

In fact, when I look at my town it details a missing child where there was no conclusion so I'm unsure why it would be included at there is no proven sexual link. I know a bit about the case and it was also likely he had met with an accident. Take it with a pinch of salt!

Tatty, that's not an official register

Ronmione · 06/04/2014 21:45

ChelworthBrond Reformed! You're having a fucking laugh aren't you?

^ this

wheresthelight · 06/04/2014 21:45

It's not the ones on the register you need to worry about, they are very tightly monitored!

What you should be worrying about are all the ones thathhaven't been caught as they pose a far higher risk than someone who has been convicted!

PatrickStarisabadbellend · 06/04/2014 21:46

I think if my parents new our neighbour was a sex offender I wouldn't of been attacked at the age of 9.

Personally I believe they should be lined up and shot in the face.

TattyDevine · 06/04/2014 21:47

Yes, I realise the source of the information is from newspapers etc but it is a database of people who have been convicted of crimes against children (of varying types) and where they are/were from. Many of them will still be in prison.

I'm aware there is no official government list and no, the addresses are not known, just the area.

Mrs DeVere are you SURE he's still dead? (sorry I shouldn't joke)

Marcipex · 06/04/2014 21:47

I would worry about a database not being updated too. What if addresses are listed, people move on a lot in some areas, especially tenants.

It's not a reliable website, it's no more than vigilante style.

Ronmione · 06/04/2014 21:49

They would all end up living in the same area, and I can guarantee it would be the deprived areas. So Yabu. Should lock the bastards up instead

TattyDevine · 06/04/2014 21:49

Disclaimer: I didn't say it was an official register, but it is a compilation of convicted sex offenders

theeternalstudent · 06/04/2014 21:50

absolutely not. I'm watching the programme too. We seem to have different understandings of what is going on in the USA.

I don't think it would offer any protection to children but instead would offer opportunities to vigilantes. Worry more about those closer to home, statistics show that they are more likely to harm a child.

And yes I do think that some sex offenders can be reformed.

TattyDevine · 06/04/2014 21:50

and people who have committed and been convicted of crimes against children

bearleftmonkeyright · 06/04/2014 21:53

This program is breaking my heart.

ginmakesitallok · 06/04/2014 21:53

Tatty, you said it was a database of convicted sex offenders, it's not. It's a compilation of newspaper stories

deakymom · 06/04/2014 21:54

i dont mean to be funny but they do tend to get relocated near children i mean RIGHT near children we had a couple in the flats by my road the flats which were full of single parents and to the left was a first and second school to the left was a park

its like putting a hungry chocoholic in cadburys and expecting them not to touch

there is no reforming a sex offender i would never trust one ever again its like a dog that bites you badly why would you go near it again?

i know bleeding hearts say they can't help themselves and they have impulses but it really can't be that hard not to indulge in this

midwifeandmum · 06/04/2014 21:55

yes an app!! Thats what they were using on louis show.

I dont personally feel an app would be appropriate but I want to bloody know where they are!

Tweasels · 06/04/2014 21:55

I bet this is a topic on The Wright Stuff tomorrow.

StampyIsMyBoyfriend · 06/04/2014 21:56

Information is available online.

Personally, I feel paedophiles should be put down, thus removing the problem.

WorraLiberty · 06/04/2014 21:56

I dont personally feel an app would be appropriate but I want to bloody know where they are!

Why though?

Nicknacky · 06/04/2014 21:57

But midwife, what would you do differently?

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 06/04/2014 21:58

What exactly would you do with this information, OP?

FreudiansSlipper · 06/04/2014 22:00

listening to this man now it shows you how complex it can be

this man may have never had sexual feelings towards children, he may of course be lying

but we need to understand more as the option to just lock them away is just not an option. so for all us bleeding hearts yes understanding is needed even if it is to protect our future generations and those that have sexual feelings towards children how they may be able to manage their feelings better

Joules68 · 06/04/2014 22:00

Sex offenders aren't always going to be looking at/ planning to attack kids..... So I don't get the 'I've got kids!!!' Hysteria
