Apologies, as teaching and striking are continually done to death on here, and this may have already been posted. I've just been sent this video of slam poetry and thought some folks here may appreciate it.

I reckon this is a pretty clear explanation of how a lot of secondary teachers are feeling at the moment, and why there is copious moaning and striking.

Bump...for all teachers.

natwebb79 · 06/04/2014 15:55

I saw this and it really does sum up how most of us are feeling!

Legologgo · 06/04/2014 15:57

oh she pisses me RIGHT OFF

saltlakecity · 06/04/2014 15:58

Why Lego?

sarahquilt · 06/04/2014 15:58

To be honest after teaching for many years, I've come to accept that many people have obnoxious Daily Mail attitudes to teachers and other public servants. I cannot be bothered to persuade anyone or point out the obvious, that teachers are drowning in paperwork, overworked, under - paid and generally treated like shite. I am completely over trying to 'win' people over.

Legologgo · 06/04/2014 15:58

why do teachers have to be lefties?
pLus - lady - nose ring

saltlakecity · 06/04/2014 16:00

She isn't saying teachers have to be lefties. She is saying they should have an awareness of history.

Legologgo · 06/04/2014 16:00

..have to know about Arthur Scargill.....

saltlakecity · 06/04/2014 16:00

And she's allowed a nose ring. Her choice and doesn't need judgement for her appearance.

LaGuardia · 06/04/2014 16:01

I should imagine a few teachers will watch it, if they are still in the country during their paid two weeks of leave Confused

Legologgo · 06/04/2014 16:01

she's more guilty of inverted snobbery and being judgemental than he is tbh

Legologgo · 06/04/2014 16:01

and I am NO fan of Gove

Legologgo · 06/04/2014 16:02

gah - Laguardia - its not paid, dont fall into that trap
teachers are only paid for the weeks they work - spread out.
NO one is saying teaching is easy.

Imnotaslimjim · 06/04/2014 16:02

Wow, very heartfelt and does completely sum it up. Bet he doesn't listen though

Feenie · 06/04/2014 16:03

The bit about our own kids choked me.

ravenAK · 06/04/2014 16:05

Like it.

Our HT has just made nose rings compulsory for all teaching staff as it happens; something to do with 'leading us' more effectively?

Oh & we're all booked in next week to have 'Property of Xxxx Academy' tattooed on our bottoms.

mycatoscar · 06/04/2014 16:05

Teachers get the same amount if paid holiday as anyone else who is employed laguardia. We also get unpaid holidays too, and we are expected to work through a large amount of our holidays.

What is your problem?

If you are employed, do you not get paid holiday then?

fayrae · 06/04/2014 16:08

If they are "unpaid" for their currently holidays how much are they actually paid in a year in real terms?

Sorry but I think this woman (nose ring, posh accent, lefty) is just living up to negative perceptions that people already have of teachers.

Dawndonnaagain · 06/04/2014 16:08

As I say on every thread I find you on LaGuardia do fuck off. Why you haven't been banned yet is beyond me.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 06/04/2014 16:13

Posh accent? No way. Articulate? Absolutely.

I said it on the other thread, I found it really powerful.

ravenAK · 06/04/2014 16:14

To be fair, you'd need to have an awful lot of cognitive dissonance going on to combine teaching & right-wing opinions.

& what's wrong with a teacher having an educated accent?

we're paid for 1265 hours a year. I've done my quota for this year already, but the little buggers will keep turning up in my classroom all the same.

fayrae · 06/04/2014 16:19

"To be fair, you'd need to have an awful lot of cognitive dissonance going on to combine teaching & right-wing opinions."

Sorry but that's utter rot. There's nothing inherently left-wing about teaching as a profession. There should (in theory, anyway) be an equal number of right and left wing teachers, so that kids are being taught a balanced view of the world.

If teachers are paid for 1265 hours a year, how much are they on an hour? It sounds a lot. I work 1850 hours a year (just worked it out).

ilovesooty · 06/04/2014 16:25

The 1265 hours is just the directed time element. In addition they have to perform any additional duties the HT deems necessary. If they only worked their directed time when do you imagine your child's classes would be prepared or work marked?

moobaloo · 06/04/2014 16:26

Very good.

I hope it has an effect on some people who need to hear and understand it. A shame that a lot of people 'in power' are too blinded to see the bigger picture.

fayrae · 06/04/2014 16:29

It just seems a bit ridiculous to me. Why say 1265 hours when its more? Why say they don't get paid for the holidays when they do - at least in the sense that most people understand, they get paid for 12 months a year, just like people in regular jobs who have 4 weeks off.
