To ask for the present?

My DD had a party for her bday a couple of weeks ago. At the party, the mum of one of her best friends said to me "sorry, I'll have to give DD her present at school" as she hadn't brought it with her. So far nothing has materialised and DD keeps asking when she's going to get it. She asked her friend yesterday and her friend said "you can't have it, it's lost". (They're in reception). Should I ask the mum (also a friend of mine - not close though) where the present is or would that be really cheeky?

This has happened to me twice. But sometimes I just can't afford it and end up mumbling about sorting it another time. Blush even though I'd mentioned it out of shame I'd be mortified if anyone asked for it. Sense the tone. For the love of god.
I now tell people not to bring presents at all as some of my friends are on the bones of their arse. If you really can't bear the thought of your child going without a present then buy one yourself and pretend you found it. If ds mentions it to the mum or child then feign ignorance.

Sorry your dd.

No please don't ask! Maybe the mum really couldn't afford a present and feels awful as it is.
I'm fortunate to have never been in this situation but if I was I'd be horrified if someone asked me.

Just explain to your dd that there isn't a present but the main thing is her friend came to her party

I had this exact situation but it was my oldest friend and I knew it was just that she a dippy cow had forgotten. So I did send a little prompt as DS was really disappointed and I knew that wasn't what she would want.

But I agonised for weeks about it.
