LineRunner · 02/04/2014 23:34

Usual, don't worry, I have given up after one day

expatinscotland · 02/04/2014 23:37

usual, you can expect to die a painful and premature death, costing the NHS millions. The government said so.

Scholes34 · 02/04/2014 23:38

Just had three redcurrants on my lemon tart. Does that count as two portions?

And a vodka.

MaoamMuncher · 02/04/2014 23:41

Do it most days without even thinking about, have had 9 today.

almondcake · 02/04/2014 23:42

Vodka and orange juice would be one of your seven a day.

MaoamMuncher · 02/04/2014 23:44

Today I've had

Lettuce
Cucumber
Tomato
Peppers
Onions
Pears
Mandarin
Plums
Handful of grapes

HillyHolbrook · 02/04/2014 23:45

I thought I was doing okay with 5 a day, I'm only managing the 7 now because I'm doing Slimming World anyway and they try stuff you with fruit and veg so you can't have room to eat cake. Wink

I like veggies though really, I'm always disappointed at MILs because she isn't used to people actually eating it so I get a brocolli stem and a few peas max, but with her culinary skills that's a good thing. She was shocked when she came to ours for dinner and DP ate green beans and spinach that I cooked, she doesn't seem to realise that steaming veg to death makes it disgusting and it's possible to cook it for less than 45 minutesGrin

Maybe that's why so many people don't like it? They've only ever had it cooked badly and find it bland?

almondcake · 02/04/2014 23:48

lemony, same here. I eat mostly fruit and veg because I am doing slimming world and am vegetarian, so am just doing the green plan. Fruit, veg, eggs.

Ecclefechan · 03/04/2014 00:44

Some of you smug sods are eating way too much fruit (and therefore too much sugar) to have a healthy diet.

And how can they now say "don't count frozen veg"? What new-fangled research have they done to contradict all the years where they were saying it contained more vitamins and nutrients because it was frozen soon after picking blah blah?

LineRunner · 03/04/2014 00:46

Kebabs have cabbage and salad and all that. I'm sorted.

AnnieMaybe · 03/04/2014 01:00

be good if we could all afford to buy this amount of fresh fruit and vegetables daily

Morloth · 03/04/2014 01:04

I suspect we already do.

Here is the thing though, we don't eat a lot of carbs/starch.

So where lots of people might have rice/pasta/mash we have veg.

Do you know what though? Fuck it, I mean really, don't fucking tell us what to eat. We can figure it out.

HolgerDanske · 03/04/2014 13:43

Yes I will, because I am very low carb so all my meals are based on veg and protein.

TillyTellTale · 03/04/2014 14:26

Is this still going on?

Someone linked the NHS portion guide in this very thread. Here are some specific portion sizes for each type of vegetable, picked at random for you, so you can stop worrying about weighing them into 80g portions. Also? I use more than 80g of sugar in one chocolate cake. 80grams is not this huge imposing amount everyone seems to think this week. Am I the only person with a set of scales now?

Frozen Peas: 3 heaped tablespoons
Tomato Puree: 1 heaped tablespoon
Mange-tout: 1 handful
Broccoli: 2 spears
Kidney Beans, cooked:3 heaped tablespoons
Grapes: 1 handful
Avocado: half an avocado
Tomato, fresh: 1 medium, or 7 cherry
Carrots, fresh slices: 3 heaped tablespoons

mummybare · 03/04/2014 14:28

Yeah, I probably do already - 1 or 2 for brekkie (usually fruit), about 3 for lunch (salad usually plays a part at this time of year, sometimes with sandwich/omelette/quiche etc), and 2 or 3 for dinner. At work I'll snack on fruit. So probably too much fruit but I figure I have a sweet tooth and an apple is probably better than a load of biscuits.

No vag, though. Although I'm sure that would be an equally healthy lifestyle choice Grin

Patchouli · 03/04/2014 14:29

Wasn't there a 10 a day quiche here?

TillyTellTale · 03/04/2014 14:30

If you like vegetables, eat them and shut up about it.
If you don't like vegetables, don't eat them and shut up about it.

But please don't do this middle ground of secretly eating plenty and publicly bellyaching about how you can't possibly have put 80g of anything in the bolognaise or whatever.

TillyTellTale · 03/04/2014 14:38

Oh, and it seems from the other thread, that this 7-a-day survey, for the purposes of getting accurate responses, simplified portion sizes to 1 heaped tablespoon for everything.

So, basically, these 7 portions correlating with good health? Are the same five we've all been supposed to eat for years...

almondcake · 03/04/2014 15:29

Mummybare, do you put veg in the omlette and quiche? I don't really eat omlettes but I might do if they were a bit more interesting than just cheese.

KellyElly · 03/04/2014 15:59

In the working week I recon I do as I take grapes, an apple and a banana into work as snacks and have big bowl of salad for lunch and usually fish/chicken and veg in the evening. The weekends are another story though as I'm at home tend to snack on a biscuit/crisps over fruit and choose pizza over healthy meal option.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 03/04/2014 16:16

I reckon I get close to it most days.
huge bowl of fruit for breakfast (2)
apple / 2 kiwis mid morning (2)
salad for lunch (1)
orange after (1)
dinner always with either salad (1) or a couple of different types of veg (2)
yoghurt and a nectarine mid evening snack (1)
could add a glass of juice for an extra one but don't
EASY!

mummybare · 03/04/2014 20:32

Oh yes, omelette and quiche will haven't least a couple of types of veg in and probably some cheese/ham. I wouldn't be happy with a plain cheese omelette either, almondcake - beige food makes me sad.
