God I struggle with five. I have about one bannana every other week and thats it. I havent had a vegtable since about 2003. If anyone will actaully do this, please tell me how. It seems impossible.

Yes, three each if the passata counts. The three people are fictional. It is me as the lone vegetarian in my house putting it in the fridge and eating it three days running.

So if I have had that, 2 apples, a whole punnet of raspberries and half a tin of baked beans, that is seven, although the apples are a repeat. And there should more veg and less fruit.

I've also had hummus but I'm not sure that counts if it is not home made.

expatinscotland · 02/04/2014 22:24

No. Life is too short to spend counting shit you eat or drink because the government or a study tells you. I use common sense.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 02/04/2014 22:24

Westiemama- potatoes definitely don't count! In the USA they do count, and they recommend you eat 10 portions of fruit and vag (snort! Grin) a day.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 02/04/2014 22:28

So why is fruit so bad? Is it just the high sugar content? Nobody in my family eats anywhere near enough veg, apart from when we have a roast which isn't weekly. I'm fed up of tying to make healthy meals that everyone will eat. I bloody love a massive ratatouille, for example, but neither dp not the dc will touch it with a barge pole Sad

almondcake · 02/04/2014 22:30

I have no common sense. I usually do at least a third of the meal should be fruit and veg, because then I can just look at it and don't have to add stuff up.

chesterberry · 02/04/2014 22:30

I think I should be able to get 7+ most days, I'm vegetarian so maybe that makes it easier.. Today I have had a banana, rasberries and blueberries, glass of orange juice, 1/2 avocado on ryvita, popcorn (not sure if that counts but maybe as sweetcorn does), lentil & vegetable soup, dried dates, baked mushrooms, steamed asparagus, boiled carrots, peas, a vegetarian bean burger, edamame beans and a spinach, tomato and pepper salad. I try and make sure I pile up my plate with vegetables at dinner time and always start with a bowl of salad, although some of the portions were probably only 1/2 portions.

almondcake · 02/04/2014 22:32

Black holes, make it for yourself and put the extra portions in the fridge or freezer. I had a version of ratatouille for breakfast this morning - just got it out the fridge and heated it up.

Backtobedlam · 02/04/2014 22:40

Only ever if chocolate is classified as a fruit/veg. How on earth do people fit in that quantity? I usually have a sandwich and piece of fruit for lunch, dinner is meat, potato and one or two other vegs, or a pasta dish with chopped veg but in tiny quantities. I don't really snack unless it's on chocolate and don't eat breakfast, so where do you cram in the extra portions?!

hench · 02/04/2014 22:41

I easily manage this on some days, but then eat hardly any on others. Today would have been fine - had a pear at breakfast, a large salad at lunch (lettuce, toms, peppers and cucumber, but it would probs only count 2 or 3 at most I would think), dinner had leeks, broad beans and spinach (all homegrown from allotment, beans were frozen) and fruit crumble (apple and blackcurrent, again homegrown & frozen) for pud (might count as 1 or 2 portions - not sure). So probs between 7 and 9 portions all told.

But I like my veg, and I like salads, and I have a freezer stacked full of home grown fruit & veg and an abundance of fresh veg in season too.

thenightsky · 02/04/2014 22:43

I don't care. I'll eat what I want. Sick of being told this or that is good or bad, only for the story to change the next week. Fuck em all. I'm eating what I want from now on.

Serenitysutton · 02/04/2014 22:43

Things like soup/ passata/ juice/ smoothies don't count or at a stretch count as one. They don't have the fibre content or nutrients of the whole veg

Serenitysutton · 02/04/2014 22:43

Or sauces

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 02/04/2014 22:44

Let's see. Uh, even though today was a good day veg wise, I still didn't achieve 5 portions.

2 satsumas at breakfast - 1 portion F&V
Small bowl chili veg for lunch - prob 2 portions F&V
Red pepper & tomato in my fish curry - 1 portion

I haven't a hope of raising it to 7!!

Notanexcitingname · 02/04/2014 22:44

garlic counts, yes. but a portion is 80g. 80g of garlic? Really?
No vampires near your house ;)

LineRunner · 02/04/2014 22:45

Oh well bollocks to it then.

ACatCalledColin · 02/04/2014 22:47

Don't be silly Grin.

Comeatmefam · 02/04/2014 22:48

I eat 7 a day easily which is why I am so flatulent.

Today (as well as protein and carbs) I ate:
Banana
Mango
Melon
Pomegranate
Salad - radishes, leaves, tomatoes
French beans
Mange tout
peas
Apple

That's a normal day for me too - fuck I eat a lot Blush.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/04/2014 23:00

Home made soup counts.

Ecclefechan · 02/04/2014 23:04

I thought frozen veg was as good, if not better, than "fresh"? Have they changed their bleedin' minds?

Comeatmefam · 02/04/2014 23:11

Yes Ecc new research/findings says don't count frozen or tinned!!!

flipchart · 02/04/2014 23:14

I've been doing at least 7 a day for years!

PrincessOfChina · 02/04/2014 23:20

I've fit myself in a tizzy about this. Largely because I've been eating like a pig for months.

Anyway, I tried hard today and think I managed it:

Yogurt, All Bran and Apple for breakfast

Mango snack

Omelette with mushroom, pepper and spring onion for lunch

Banana snack

Dinner was stir fry and beef, so based on 80g suggestion that's another two portions.

Lord knows how I would fit 10 portions in. I refuse to count juice, unless I can also count wine!

PrincessOfChina · 02/04/2014 23:21

Also, ten different kinds?! But only 3 fruit. Any suggestions for what else I could add in?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/04/2014 23:26

China-green leafy veg I'd what you need. Kale, cabbage, sprouts, broccoli.

Even my optician said of you do nothing else eat your greens for optimum eye health!
