..cleaned my oven. I recently confessed this to a friend who is hardly a domestic goddess herself and she nearly fell off her chair. But the oven doesn't look that dirty and any germs must be killed off by the heat, so why bother?

NB I do keep the oven door clean & shiny to lull visitors into a false sense of bio-security Wink.

I have a range; food burns off into soot eventually Grin

Pipbin · 02/04/2014 20:51

I was talking about this with a friend the other day.
My oven is just under a year old and I've yet to clean it.
But, like a PP, I have never cooked meat in it.

drspouse · 02/04/2014 20:53

*I don't clean my oven either.

Once or twice DH has become overcome by the state of it and has gone 't into a cleaning frenzy. I don't stand in his way...*

YYY to this.

phonebox · 02/04/2014 20:54

My Mum never cleaned hers in 18 years and we survived.

I'm afraid I've followed in her footsteps.

MIL has one that looks like new every time I see it...am ashamed. Blush

PlumProf · 02/04/2014 20:54

This thread is very reassuring :-)

I have twice (in 4 years) had a man in to perform a full oven clean after which it has looked like new. Otherwise not. It is mainly charcoal (I think) that is left behind after cooking.

I keep the door and oven trays clean and shiny though.

Macocious · 02/04/2014 20:55

Oven cleaning chemicals are horrible. Almost passed out from the fumes before. Buy a pyrolytic oven, they're great!

RedFocus · 02/04/2014 20:55

My mum cleans mine. She can't sit still and has to clean things every time she visits which is about once a week so I leave the housework for a day or too so she has something to do.
My brother pays her to do his but I get mine done for free but I'm not telling him that! Wink

NigellasGuest · 02/04/2014 20:55

Got mine cleaned today! cost £80

ExitPursuedByABear · 02/04/2014 20:57

I have an Aga. They don't need cleaning.

Relief.

londonrach · 02/04/2014 20:57

You clean ovens? Confused.com. Why ?

JammyTodger · 02/04/2014 21:00

My oven is older than my DS (nearly 5) and I've never thought to clean it. Why would you need to do it every 2-3 months? I very occasionally sweep out the bottom with a dustpan and brush. I do love a shiny hob and door though.

AnyoneforTurps · 02/04/2014 21:01

Envy of all these people with OCD mothers. All mine does when she visits is swig Prosecco on the sofa.

Macocious · 02/04/2014 21:02

Oh forgot to say I'm still too lazy to use the pyrolytic feature as often as I should...

andsmile · 02/04/2014 21:04

self clean, self cleaning mothers Envy

Mines a mess. he grill pan is shameful.

I mean I wipe around the door in and out but thats about it.

Too much cheese on toast

TheCowThatLaughs · 02/04/2014 21:06

I bought some oven pride before Christmas, but haven't used it yet. Maybe I'll do it over the weekend...

AnimatedDad · 02/04/2014 21:07

Cleaned mine last week. Now it keeps saying SE on the display and turning off randomly.

I advise don't.

RedSoloCup · 02/04/2014 21:07

No oven cleaning here either, I hoover the crumbs out once in a while though..... ;)

blackcurrentjuice · 02/04/2014 21:08

I cleaned mine for the first time last week. That oven pride stuff is great. Squirt it all on, rub it in and leave it for 4/6 hours (ie drink tea/do other stuff) then just rinse off with a cloth.

Of course when explaining this to DH I may have mentioned hours of scrubbing away at the oven...

BlackeyedSusan · 02/04/2014 21:08

I found a meteortire in the back of my oven. I think it was a potato in a previous incarnation. It was difficult to tell from it's black and wizened form.

Annietheacrobat · 02/04/2014 21:12

Never cleaned mine either. Everyone on my local Facebook page seems obsessed with oven cleaning services. Mine seems to self clean after a while.

KittensoftPuppydog · 02/04/2014 21:53

2 years here and never cleaned it. That's why why they invented oven doors - so you can shut them and not think about it.

Janethegirl · 02/04/2014 21:55

I was lucky, mine broke under warranty so I got a new one, much easier than cleaning it. It seems that most people don't clean their ovens on a regular (!!) basis.

crazykat · 02/04/2014 21:56

I clean mine when I'm at the nesting stage of pregnancy, youngest dc is 17 months. It needs doing but there's always something better else that needs doing.

I'm going to have to do it soon though as something had spilt on the bottom of the oven which is starting to smell burnt every time I use it. Actually I might convince DH he needs to do it.

Cinderelephant · 02/04/2014 21:59

YANBU, not one little bit (not cleaning the oven is tame), still recovering from the shit thread.

ThePinkOcelot · 02/04/2014 22:01

My old cooker was self cleaning, which was great - until it blew up during self cleaning! Wish I had left it dirty!
