This happened in a part of the USA. And what was happening was that single mothers were being bussed to factories in distant parts of the city and then not getting back on time to collect their small children from daycare.

Fucking disgusting.

hotcrosshunny · 01/04/2014 22:44

Honestly. These people saying that they're going to work to fund other people.

No you don't. Your taxes will contribute what, 1p towards it? Ridiculous.

I'm a higher rate taxpayer and likely subsidise many lower paid and non workers but I don't see it like that. It is a contribution to society.

If childcare wasn't so bloody expensive then it would be easier for people to work. We have one of the most expensive child care systems in Europe. Where are these jobs going to come from?

AwfulMaureen · 01/04/2014 22:44

Making people work for free, is not a way out of this mess. There are no jobs for the un-skilled as it is!

My nephew...25 years old, good A Levels, very presentable and keen has been unemployed for seven months!

He's been for interviews as many supermarkets and bars, farms and even a chicken factory. It seems that most jobs are going to people who know someone.

He has just been offered some shifts in a local pub and is beside himself with joy.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 01/04/2014 22:45

They would be better off putting the money into training /college courses. If you want people to be able to live without benefits training is the way forward, not putting people to work for free in pound land

AmberLeaf · 01/04/2014 22:46

Not necessarily TA's. Anything that needs doing. Gardening. Playtime supervisor. Cleaning. Helping in the kitchen. Creating displays of kids work. The list is endless of genuinely useful things you could do within a school environment for 3 hours a day

So what happens to all of the people who already do those things as a paid job?

Should they be made redundant, have to sign on, then they can go back to their old job under the workfare scheme? yeah that sounds good.

AwfulMaureen · 01/04/2014 22:48

I am glad I'm leaving the UK. This is no place for young, non professional families. It's geared entirely towards the well heeled and the old boys. It's riddled with liars and cheats right up to the highest places. Basically, if you're poor, ignorant or disabled you can fuck right off...that's what this government is saying and they're going to be creating a terrible mess for future generations to clean up.

AmberLeaf · 01/04/2014 22:48

Yes.

They have cut funding for all that sort of thing now though. Can't have people getting above their station.

HappyMummyOfOne · 01/04/2014 22:48

People have a choice if they dont like the rules, return to work after maternity leave or start job hunting if they didnt have a job before getting pregnant. Nobody is forced to live on benefits, its just seen as a cushy number. Too many have children without giving financial support a second glance as they know they sign a few forms and the money gets handed over.

Children do far better if raised in a working household. Surely most parents want whats best for their child so why chose a lifestyle that statistics show puts a child at a hige disadvantage in life?

its up to 30 hours a week collecting litter and cleaning up graffiti hardly helping you into work they are helping people OUT of work (ie the people who normally do those jobs) and who pays the other 15 hours a week child care not to mention the time it costs to get to and from work could the grandparents help? NO they all have to work till they are 68 and are no longer able to help

jellybeans · 01/04/2014 22:49

Shit idea... Some people with babies/toddlers choose to work but that doesn't mean everyone with young children should have to, it's a job in itself and as has been pointed out often costs more to support childcare etc. Many lone parents I know are struggling already especially when they other half does bugger all. They do the work of both parents.. Help/encourage but don't force.

How long till they make it 40 hours a week from a few months old :(

Monetbyhimself · 01/04/2014 22:50

So the child has to be 3.
3 hours a day free childcare and requirement is to work 15 hours a week. That could equate to 3 5 hour shifts.
For a maximum of 2 years, an LP will have to pay for a few hours childcare a week.
In order to gain work based experience, and set them up to return to or seek longer hours once kids reach school age.

I'm a lone parent. I work but I also know how much I am entitled to in tax credits and it's not an insignificant amount.

I really don't see the issue here ?

AwfulMaureen · 01/04/2014 22:50

HappyMummy have you tried to get a job recently? Your ignorance is astounding.

My nephew is well presented and has A levels. He's been unemployed for 7 months despite doing all he's meant to to find a job.

Darkesteyes · 01/04/2014 22:50

Im totally against workfare but this thought just occured to me.... Are they also going to make absent/neglectful/financially abusive fathers who try to wriggle out of paying Child Support do workfare? NO? So im guessing that its not just class hatred behind this. Its mysogyny too.

Joules68 · 01/04/2014 22:50

Ok,so what's the alternative? Sit at home and watch Jezza?

AwfulMaureen · 01/04/2014 22:51

DarkEyes Exactly! Where the fuck is THEIR share of "free work"??

MoominsYonisAreScary · 01/04/2014 22:51

Exactly Amber its all bollocks

floer · 01/04/2014 22:52

I don't agree with workfare, and it doesn't work. Apart from making those with similar-income-envy, or DM readers, feel better that the feckless are working a little for their handouts.

I feel very sorry for the people this will affect.

Joules68 · 01/04/2014 22:52

Much better to be out doing something before depression sets in..... Cos that's the reality for a lone parent

AwfulMaureen · 01/04/2014 22:52

Joules I suppose SOME of the single parents might do the same as any other parent...go to toddler groups, perhaps study, play with their child....you know...the things people with small children do.

WaterLoadaCack · 01/04/2014 22:53

Children do far better in a working household

Where does this information come from? Just your opinion?
