African out of interest do you think your mother relying on neighbours to provide for her children is more acceptable than someone claiming benefits to enable them to support their children?

Lioninthesun · 04/04/2014 14:21

It is certainly very alarming how little community feeling there is left.
A SW who despises single mothers and thinks that they can dish out advise on childcare to them like Mother Superior isn't going to go down well with anyone, no matter what you score on an exam. Who'd employ a person who will alienate people they are being paid to help just to boost their own ego?
You may want to try walking a mile in the shoes of single mothers, or at the very least admit you need to re-think your stance. Otherwise you are clearly heading for the wrong career.

GildaFarren · 04/04/2014 14:26

fideline I'm not a religious person but I do wish more people would take the attitude of There, but for the grace of God, go I.

Shit can happen to anyone - even the hard workers amongst us - and you can't always see it coming.

The vast majority of people are doing the best they can in the circumstances in which they find themselves.

Needsmorecake · 04/04/2014 14:29

So, maybe im being naive here.. but surely to work as a social worker, you have got to have some kind of clue on this kind of thing? Surely they cant let just anyone do it, the damage that would be done, if some poor woman got stuck with someone spouting such rubbish as has been said today... well. i dread to think the impact that could have.

Grennie · 04/04/2014 14:35

Needsmore - There is I know concern about some of the standards nowdays of social work training. It used to be tougher to get onto a course and how you are as a person was taken into account. Nowdays if you can do the academic side, you are in. It is scary.

DontCareAboutYourShoes · 04/04/2014 14:36

Relatively close to Plymouth, you say Heisenberg? I'm half tempted to ask the local universities how they vet the attitudes of potential social workers that they accept

fideline · 04/04/2014 14:37

Hear hear Gilda

fideline · 04/04/2014 14:38

She'll have to demonstrate non-judgemental practice to qualify. I wonder if she's a good actress?

DontCareAboutYourShoes · 04/04/2014 14:39

That's interesting! How do they measure that?

Needsmorecake · 04/04/2014 14:43

tazers. hopefully.

heisenberg999 · 04/04/2014 14:43

Its bristol uni Im going actually. I dont think workfare is any good and I think provision for childcare should be more universal over uk to enable everyone to work like you can in my area. The ones that one will but you can lead a horse to water and it wont drink so no point forcing people on workfare. I stand by all that yes

RandallFloyd · 04/04/2014 14:46

If I wanted to jump to conclusions I could probably say some pretty judgmental things about someone who chose to have a child then chose to put them in childcare for 50+ hours a week at 2 weeks old.

I wouldn't because it's none of my business and because don't know the full story. I also think it's mostly horse shit

fideline · 04/04/2014 14:48

Randall Grin

Needsmorecake · 04/04/2014 14:48

i also think its total bull

heisenberg999 · 04/04/2014 14:48

I dont mind about people making judgements on that as thats up to them.

fideline · 04/04/2014 14:50

Let's hope your imaginary children grow up to be a darn sight less judgmental than you are Heis

YouTheCat · 04/04/2014 14:51

Needsmore, our 3rd social worker (children with disabilities team) was utterly awful. She did nothing to arrange respite and took twice as long to do the initial assessment than she was legally supposed to. The 4th social worker took 6 weeks to sort out some respite and, eventually, a residential placement. So very very different. One didn't care at all and one cared so much.

DontCareAboutYourShoes · 04/04/2014 15:00

Bristol university, okay.

And saying that guff doesn't override what you've written elsewhere.

Needsmorecake · 04/04/2014 15:03

theres a law about returning to work... is it 6 weeks min? or 8?

so, would it not follow that it would be similar for uni?

Also, to find a childcarer to take a baby so young....... again, not usual, is it?

might flag up concerns....

heisenberg999 · 04/04/2014 15:06

Its 2 weeks mandatory you have to have off legally which is the same as employment.

fideline · 04/04/2014 15:08

Also, to find a childcarer to take a baby so young....... again, not usual, is it?

It would be illegal to part a puppy from its mother so young.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 04/04/2014 15:08

We had someone come back to uni after 3 weeks, she was entitled to alot longer on full bursery. The baby was looked after by her dh and older dd though.

Personally id rather gouge my own eyes out than leave such a young baby though

fideline · 04/04/2014 15:09

Strange values we have now, as a nation.

DontCareAboutYourShoes · 04/04/2014 15:10

I'm more confused about the full time masters while working.

heisenberg999 · 04/04/2014 15:12

Again your opinion and I have no problems with you saying that or the need to make personal digs.
