To have cycled into a cat

Rhododendron · 30/03/2014 21:39

Background: I'm new to cycling and not very good at it yet.

I was cycling along, fairly slowly, when a cat ran into the road ahead of me. Since it would be so much more manoeuvrable than me, I carried on, assuming it would avoid me. But it ran straight under my front wheel!

I don't think it was (hope not, anyway!) particularly hurt since it carried on running and disappeared through a gate. (I stopped.)

Was I BU? Should I have tried to avoid it?

Bit confused since I thought cats were rather more sensible than that? DH (experienced cyclist) says he's never needed to avoid a cat.

I first saw a ferret in the flesh in 1983 at my friends farm in deepest Ludlow. I thought it was an ugly dog. she was called Helen, ferret not friend.

thought the op had a heavy goods vehicle license. Confused

ooh, its painful when ferrets get in the flesh. but a rabbit similarly situated can be painful too. a rabbit packs a nasty bite.

I once ran over the hind leg of a labrador which ran out into the road with the apparent intention of trying to bite the nearside front wheel of my Mini. While I was doing 30 mph.

This was late at night and the bonkers canine-ite ran directly at the car from the pavement; I didn't notice it until it materialised in my headlights and I couldn't avoid it. Mad hairy bastard.

I did stop out of shock and the owner was actually very apologetic. Just as well.

SelfRighteousPrissyPants · 31/03/2014 23:17

That was me Maryz.

The snake in the grass reminds me, I nearly ran over one once- in my defence the bike had no brakes and I was going downhill. However the snake was obviously much better fitted for survival than the OP's cat as it got out of the way incredibly fast. Snakes- officially brainier than cats Wink
