To have cycled into a cat

Rhododendron · 30/03/2014 21:39

Background: I'm new to cycling and not very good at it yet.

I was cycling along, fairly slowly, when a cat ran into the road ahead of me. Since it would be so much more manoeuvrable than me, I carried on, assuming it would avoid me. But it ran straight under my front wheel!

I don't think it was (hope not, anyway!) particularly hurt since it carried on running and disappeared through a gate. (I stopped.)

Was I BU? Should I have tried to avoid it?

Bit confused since I thought cats were rather more sensible than that? DH (experienced cyclist) says he's never needed to avoid a cat.

I've got either a cavalier or a cocker spaniel on either side, I could try them?

I don't want the op using my bike thanks it's a mint condition 1991 claud Butler steel mountain bike and weighs the same as your average tank.

GoldenGytha · 31/03/2014 18:04

Impatient

No need to be so rude, I just happen to adore all cats, and would willingly hurt myself than hurt one.

greenfolder · 31/03/2014 18:06

I would have assumed a cat would move too.its not you.

Honey, I think you need to use duct tape to hold the dog down, as I doubt you dogs commitment to the experiment. This is SCIENCE happening here!!

HoneyDragon · 31/03/2014 18:14

That could work, dogs abandoned me to go and play on the climbing frame and slide anyway.

thebody · 31/03/2014 18:17

er excuse me pleasejustgo how is it vile to haul someone off a bike who deliberately and or habitually runs over innocent cats/dogs/frogs/ferrets etc.

op made a mistake, granted she sounds a nut case and a menace on the road but it was an accident.

deliberate careering towards said animals, especially cats going about their business is dreadful behaviour.

in my ladybird psychology book that would be a git!

as I said previously I sustained bad cuts avoiding a pigeon on my bike and they are my last favourite bird.

i ran over a rabbit last year and was inconsolable although dh did say it was a nasty bully rabbit. Confused

Pleasejustgo · 31/03/2014 18:18

Because theBody, you are better than that!

thebody · 31/03/2014 18:19

dammitsue you have made tape out of a duck?

there are no limits to your behaviour.

HoneyDragon · 31/03/2014 18:19

Are you sure we shouldn't use the dog? She's all ready to go now...

Nah OP ... Or dammitsue. I LOVE DUCKS

thebody · 31/03/2014 18:22

please do you really have so much faith in me? I will endeavour to live up to it then.

I would just kick the bike/and/or person but not do the haul!

thebody · 31/03/2014 18:23

that dog has wierd ears! do you know?

HoneyDragon · 31/03/2014 18:23

It's not a dog. It's a cat.

HoneyDragon · 31/03/2014 18:25

Would you prefer another bunny to murder instead of a cat?

Hi everyone, this is the OP.

To clarify a couple of points that seem to have been lost:
I did not run over the cat, I knocked into it from the side; meanwhile the cat slid past and carried on running, away out of sight.
I did not intend to hit the cat, I did not want to hit the cat, I did not expect to hit the cat.
(Sorry if I didn't make that explicit enough before, I left out the bits I thought were obvious in the aim of not writing an essay.)

Thank you to everyone who has made constructive comments, including the critical ones, and especially those who have been supportive. For those of you who haven't read the whole thread, I long ago admitted IWBU and declared my intention not to repeat cycling on my own (this was pretty much my first time) until and unless I get considerably better in controlled circumstances.

I really don't think continuing this thread is going to benefit anyone, so as the OP I hereby declare it closed. Good bye.

My ladybird book says that if you treat people with love and kindness eventually yes they will behave in such a way.

You've already said you'll go to such lengths to save the poor innocent animals so yes I believe you are.

thebody · 31/03/2014 18:25

right ok! are you a close friend of the op?
you sound similar. Confused

thebody · 31/03/2014 18:26

low blow honey low blow.

HoneyDragon · 31/03/2014 18:27

Thank you op. I think that would have helped earlier as you did make it sound like you cycled directly toward the cat.

HoneyDragon · 31/03/2014 18:28

It wold have to be a low blow, it's a bunny, they ain't tall.

I'm going to Hell

thebody · 31/03/2014 18:28

op this thread has been a treat.

but you are right, you need a scooter perhaps! sell your bike. it's for the best.
