Ok ok I know it's a good cause. I'm pissed off because

  1. no one has nominated me thus making me realise I don't have any decent female friends, and

  2. these selfies don't do any one any favours, aesthetically speaking, I know that's the point, but it makes me recoil a bit when all these gormless shots appear on my fb news feed.

I'll happily donate but please can this be over now......Hmm

I haven't been nominated either which is fine because I wouldn't do it anyway - I look much better with make up IMO!

I did however post a link to the Cancer Research UK.

GertTheFlirt · 23/03/2014 09:37

If is see a quote of 1 million or 2 million raised I shall C&P Cancer Research website where their accounts showed they raised 406 million last year - up 6% on the year before.

Ciwti · 23/03/2014 11:03

I have to say that I've not been nominated and that I've not witnessed any make up free selfies yet, apart from those on my phone! I take too many selfies. Blush

tulipsaredelicious · 23/03/2014 12:50

I haven't seen any other threads about it so I'm glad for a place to vent. I don't like it. I think it's weird. Why only women? I do think there's a degree of vanity involved, though clearly not by everyone doing it. I've been nominated twice but I just personally think it's attention seeking. I donate monthly to cancer research already and no one knows about it. Glad it's raised so much money, but I do wonder what it says about us that this is how it's done.

I dont wear make up so posted screenshot of my text donation in last week they have had over a million pound in donations so yes it has worked and guys are doing it they either wear make up or do the cock in a sock

tulipsaredelicious · 23/03/2014 13:09

Guys are doing it - my timeline is flooded with women and not a single guy.

sherbetpips · 23/03/2014 13:12

So many are cheating though taking picture half in the dark and most still have eye make up on just taken off their lippy!

Supercosy · 23/03/2014 13:29

I love posting unflattering selfies anyway because Dd and I enjoy gurning and find it hilarious. I do agree it is odd and has surprised me that so many people think it's scary pr brave to be photographed without make up (one of my lovely friends said she really couldn't do it...she never lets anyone see her without make up).

But...it's been an interesting discussion and it has also raised a fortune. I've taken to wearing a tiny bit of make up every day because I had health problems and it just made me feel a bit more confident. This has reminded me that I never used to wear any and I look fine without it.

HollaAtMeBaby · 23/03/2014 13:42

YANBU - it's a load of narcissistic crap. Breast cancer has better marketing than Coca-Cola.

I look forward to all these social media sheep sharing photos of themselves taking a dump in support of bowel cancer, which kills 50% more people...

bordellosboheme · 23/03/2014 15:22

Holla, agreed.... And I may get very flamed for this, but if 406 million a year (which is what they raise in funding) can't find a cure, then I think they may have their ladder against the wrong metaphorical tree. I have serious doubts about the efficacy and ethics of cancer research, and actually the medical industrial complex. Dallas buyers club anyone?

Ever long some selfies that have popped up on my newsfeed have made me shudder. They are pretty women but that wide eyed shot full frontal with no smiling makes me recoil......

page 2 and my mistake, it wasnt 406 million, it was 460

I didn't take part as all my pictures are make up free. (Haven't worn it for years). I had mixed feelings- the plus side being the funds raised, and the downside being the issue raised by natwebb79 ; it saddens me that this is still a 'thing'. (Feel the same about the current Madonna/armpit hair story)

spongebob13 · 23/03/2014 17:58

tbh I am sick of threads and moaning about these selfies. its not mandatory you don't have to do it or like it. its getting donations regardless of what you think and can only be a good thing.

some could do with reading this article.

SayMyNameSayIt · 23/03/2014 18:15

I've donated twice but nothing would persuade me to post a selfie. I don't do it at the best of times.

bordellosboheme · 23/03/2014 18:37

Sponge bob, you don't have to like these threads either, but they still exist iyswim. Face it (sic) some people don't like the craze for a variety of reasons, and this is a safe place to moan about it.

TheGirlWhoKickedTheVipersNest · 23/03/2014 18:42

MooncupMadness I ABSOLUTELY agree about the fundraising along gender lines - even as a woman who's not particularly keen on pink/traditionally 'girly' things I feel really uncomfortable about the marketing strategies, so I can't imagine how alienating it must be for men with breast cancer. Have you ever Welcome to Cancerland by Barbara Ehrenreich?

StephieDoug · 23/03/2014 19:05

Definitely agree that a lot of the women look younger! I think it's actually fairly irrelevant what the idea is, it has utilised social media and raised a ton of money.
Would love you to read a post I've put out about it sisterhoodandallthat.com/?p=176 And if you haven't been nominated, there's nothing stopping you adding your own picture, donating and nominating other friends to keep it going. I love seeing the natural faces of people I love, I love the idea of 'pass it on' and I love that it's making money for charities that fight cancer. I hate cancer. #sisterhood

StephieDoug · 23/03/2014 19:15

Just read Emma Hannigan's post. I don't mean to tell you what to do, but...READ IT www.emmahannigan.com/1/post/2014/03/no-makeup-selfie.html

I thought I was donating to beat all cancers not only breast. I've seen men taking part too (wearing makeup and doing cock in a sock). I also thought that donating isn't necessarily about finding a cure but improving people's chances. 85 per cent of children with ALL which has improved hugely over the years thanks to better knowledge and treatment. That alone is worth 3 quid for me. If you don't want to participate then don't. But don't berate those who do, having a bit of fun and camaraderie while they're at it.

matana · 23/03/2014 20:49

85 per cent of children with ALL now survive

AddToBasket · 24/03/2014 18:55

Urgh. Could anything be vainer than a competitive selfie on facebook plus brag about donation?

I find my friends pics just cringingly embarrassing - not because they look bad without make up but because they look so desperately posed.

I have seen you without make up and I know that wasn't your first take photo.
