I'm not averse to posting a selfie with no make up on and I've now been nominated.

Whilst I admire the campaign which is obviously proving successful, and I acknowledge that the work of this charity is important, I personally choose not to donate to or ask for donations for certain research charities as I am against animal testing.

I toyed with the idea of asking people to donate to another charity instead but to be honest it's not a subject I particularly want to discuss on my Facebook wall.

Shall I just pretend these nominations never happened?

I hate Facebook!

Well animal testing is necessary for some drug trials, but why not just say you object on ethical grounds? You don't have to discuss it at all.

I'm with you on the research thing. Personally I will only support a very small number of charities that I am very closely involved with. I don't care what I'm asked to do by Facebook, by people climbing Kilimanjaro or whatever, I will not donate. If asked in person I will explain why. If it were on Facebook I would just ignore.

You're under no obligation to support any charity at all, and you can ignore the stuff on Facebook.
Being opposed to animal testing... I fully understand when it's a question of testing make-up on an animal, but how do you think new drugs should be tested? Directly on humans?

I've (mercifully) seen only a few of these (and at least the more recent ones are actually mentioning charity giving) but at leats one of those has mentioned an alternative charity, with no reference to the whys.

If you are against the research aspect then that is fair enough. There are a few people on my facebook donating to Marie Curie and McMillan nurses instead of CRUK, so if you feel you want to do something they may be another option?
Totally up to you what you want to do, end of the day it is your money and no one can tell you what to do with it.

Oh heavens. Let's not start a bun fight about animal testing. Surely you can understand that someone who finds the idea of animal testing horrific will never wish to actively fund it? Even if they accept that there are no alternatives (which is debatable - but please let's not debate it now) to actively give money to something which they find upsetting is too much of an ask.

People give to charity because it is something they feel they actively want to support. No one is obliged to give to something they do not feel that way about.

Can I ask a genuine question? I don't want anyone to get arsey or throw the thread off track, but can I ask, OP, if you are against animal testing and, god forbid, get diagnosed with cancer, what do you do with regards to the treatment? Would you refuse treatment because it's been animal tested? I've always wondered what someone would do in this situation.

I've been nominated a couple of times - I'm ignoring it.

I give to charity by DD each month, but they are charities I choose. I cba to put all this on FB though, it isn't a topic for discussion so ignoring it is my strategy.

like, I dunno, a malignant melanoma is one of the tumours most likely to metastasize into the brain

everthingsdozey I can answer that question from my point of view. I am also against animal testing, but am pragmatic and would accept drugs if necessary. They are already tested - my accepting them will not really make a difference (well possibly to the profits of the drug company, but not enough of a difference to actually save any animals I suspect). If I were offered a choice of drugs though - one that had been tested on animals and one that had been tested some other way, I would of course choose the latter.

However even just vaguely disliking the thought of animal testing is enough reason to not give charitable money to actively make more of it happen. You are not being hypocritical even if you would accept the drugs, or if you eat meat or whatever. You just don't want your charitable giving to fund such a thing.

EverythingsDozy it's a fair question and yes if I or my family needed treatment we would no doubt accept it - what thecatneuterer said really.

What is needed is a rethink of testing as of now, for those who are interested the BUAV say this on the subject: www.buav.org/humane-science

Anyway, I was more disappointed not to be taking part in the photo thingy. Good to hear others have seen alternative charities mentioned - Macmillan is definitely one I'd support.

Really? You'd ingest a chemical that has unknown effects in the context of the physiology of a whole organism?

MaidOfStars - yes I would. And there are other ways of testing and really more funding is needed into these. However I really don't want to get into a bunfight about animal testing.

Given this is about cancer and you're against animal testing, why not donate to McMillan instead? You can then link to that.

I donated to my charity of choice which was breast cancer research. Others have donated to cancer charities close to their hearts.

It's up to you who you donate to but McMillan offer practical support those with cancer, as well as their nearest and dearest and is a very deserving cause if you do want to dinate to something cancer related and publically show your support
