To take my baby to A&E tonight?

I have a 3 week old DS. He was breastfed for about 10 days but lost a massive amount of weight despite me having gallons of milk. I saw many lactation consultants and breastfeeding specialists who could not really explain it. He latched on well, appeared to be drinking but never seemed satisfied. A few suggested it was too much foremilk. He even lost weight drinking huge bottles of expressed milk every 2 hours. I tried everything but had to put him on formula to stop him being admitted to hospital due to the weightloss. Since starting formula he has gaine weight and seemed more satisfied. However, he has had explosive poos, very mucusy poos, stomach pains and rumbles, snuffling/phlemy after bottle and has been spitting up quite a lot. However today he has added projectile vomiting to the list. It seems as if every bottle has come straight back. I am so worried he will get dehydrated.

I am suspecting a milk allergy or intolerance. I have something along those lines (although never been diagnosed) as full fat milk gives me cramps, sickness, upset tum, phlem although I can eat dairy and skimmed milk.

My 2 year old DD had similar. Very poor weight gain, similar symptoms etc. but noone would take me seriously and dismissed me as a neurotic first time mum. I struggled on for a year with about 10 clothes changes a day, sitting her up for hours after feeds etc. Now, if she has full fat milk she is uncomfortable and has a rattle in her chest. She is fine on semi skimmed and dairy.

I am at the end of my tether tonight. I can't take another feed with him being so violently sick he chokes. I am seriously considering taking him to A&E and crying for someone to please help me as I can't go through all this worry again.

Keeping him hydrated is most important.

I took DS to A&E when he was 4 months old. We'd already been to the GP and he'd referred to paediatrician for silent reflux. The appointment was a month away and DS was screaming in pain (worse than normal) for the fourth night running.

He was fine by the time we got there (typical) but they were great with us. Didn't make me feel neurotic and he came away with medication that turned him into a different baby within 5 days. I'd had weeks of hell and the GP did make me feel crap but the nurses and doctor at A&E were fantastic.

Go to A&E OP, you are obviously worried and your baby is so young.

I'd defo get him seen too if there are feeding problems, don't struggle through there is help there you've just got to find out the best route which is hard when you can't think straight with sleep deprivation and worry, a&e should be able to help or get you admitted to a ward with people that can help. I've had a little one examined by a paeds on call doctor in a&e before, they sound the best place to start.

If it's any help both my boys have milk allergies.

Ds2 was diagnosed at 2/3 months, he was struggling and uncomfortable back arching and bringing milk up even an hour after being fed. Swollen stomach and the big tell tale sign for us covered in eczema.

I took a video of my husband dealing with a feed and played it to the gp she referred me to the hospital, it took ages for the appointment though so she gave me special milk to use in the meantime.

If they think it's cmpa switching milk is quick and easy and it should show quick results re bloating/comfort (although it tastes vile and makes their poo green).

In hindsight I wish I'd paid and gone private to a consultant that specialises in gastro as he really knows his stuff, I felt reassured immediately.

Please ask them to check for duodenal artresia, my daughter had it, now fine and no other special needs, is nine soon, but I also had polyhydraminous and it is linked, please do go. Best wishes.

Hope all is going well and its nothing serious. My DS didn't gain weight either and only hit his birth weight at 3.5 weeks. I was under pressure to FF but persevered with BF instead. He was a tiny bottom percentile baby and as a toddler styled on the 9th for a long time. Now as a 12 year old hrs pretty average. Cows milk made him poorly but goats milk agrees with him even now. Do you think you could access goats milk formula from Boots? I think it's finally been given the ok

Thanks for your concern everyone. We are still in hospital. They have pretty much ruled out stenosis but still keeping a watchful eye. They think it is milk intolerance due to strong family history and his symptoms. First step is trying him on pepti junior milk then, failing that the neonate milk and possibly strong reflux drugs. He has only had a bit of the new milk as he hates it but he has just slept an hour on his back!! Never been able to do that before so I have everything crossed!

Is there any chance you can breastfeed him? Solves your problem.

I have tried and tried with the breastfeeding with both my children. They drink gallons but lose weight. Tried expressing, same result. No one has ever been able to help me apart from saying I have too much fore milk

I really hope you get the help your baby needs. Always listen to your instincts and never feel bad for fighting for your baby. He can't do it for himself.

monkeynuts - sterling bit of advice there Hmm.

Another hitch. He is actually worse on the pepti junior. Is literally screaming with every burb and I can see the acid coming back into his mouth. I've looked online and it says that pepti can actually make reflux worse as it is thinner so comes up more easily. So am now thinking that maybe he has reflux not intolerance. This is a nightmare. Am considering using carobel as a thickener which worked well with my daughter

Plus... I HAVE to leave the hospital tomorrow as I have no childcare. My husband has ofsted on Monday and my mom is looking after my grandparents - nan is in hospital with terminal pancreatic cancer and grandad has just had leg amputated due to cancer so I have lost all my babysitters for my 2 year old. Life is so hard at the moment and I'm feeling very sorry for myself

MrsSean I never, ever suggest this but I will make an exception. There are lots of lovely mnetters who would help out during your dh's ofsted. Would you consider posting a clue to your whereabouts and then others could send you a pm if they might live local. Maybe there is nothing we can do to help. Your baby will be well looked after in the hospital.

Ofsted is crap. I do understand that your DH has to go in. I had ofsted the week before last. Was signed off sick with pneumonia. Not infectious, got the call Weds pm, went straight in, stayed in a hotel for 2 nights (I commute) and have now made my recovery worse.

If the baby is still poorly on Weds, your DH can take special leave. Ofsted will be gone!

Speak to the hospital staff. They may agree for you to have your DD with you. I was allowed to have DD2 with me because I was BFing when DD1 was in for two weeks so it is possible to accommodate another child if necessary.
