AIBU?

To take my baby to A&E tonight?

I have a 3 week old DS. He was breastfed for about 10 days but lost a massive amount of weight despite me having gallons of milk. I saw many lactation consultants and breastfeeding specialists who could not really explain it. He latched on well, appeared to be drinking but never seemed satisfied. A few suggested it was too much foremilk. He even lost weight drinking huge bottles of expressed milk every 2 hours. I tried everything but had to put him on formula to stop him being admitted to hospital due to the weightloss. Since starting formula he has gaine weight and seemed more satisfied. However, he has had explosive poos, very mucusy poos, stomach pains and rumbles, snuffling/phlemy after bottle and has been spitting up quite a lot. However today he has added projectile vomiting to the list. It seems as if every bottle has come straight back. I am so worried he will get dehydrated.

I am suspecting a milk allergy or intolerance. I have something along those lines (although never been diagnosed) as full fat milk gives me cramps, sickness, upset tum, phlem although I can eat dairy and skimmed milk.

My 2 year old DD had similar. Very poor weight gain, similar symptoms etc. but noone would take me seriously and dismissed me as a neurotic first time mum. I struggled on for a year with about 10 clothes changes a day, sitting her up for hours after feeds etc. Now, if she has full fat milk she is uncomfortable and has a rattle in her chest. She is fine on semi skimmed and dairy.

I am at the end of my tether tonight. I can't take another feed with him being so violently sick he chokes. I am seriously considering taking him to A&E and crying for someone to please help me as I can't go through all this worry again.

Don't take no for an answer. You've seen this before, you can explain that to them.

A friend has just had very similar to you and after 5 months has finally found out he not only has a slight tongue tie (now to alert for them to snip) but is also on drugs for a gastric problem where the acid from his tummy was flowing back up due to a weak muscle. She has been passed from midwife to HV to doctors and even went private after the NHS doc didn't show to do the snip only to be told he was too old now. If she hadn't gone to all of the above and kicked up a stink they would probably still have a baby loosing weight and being miserable 24/7. Keep pushing, it doesn't sound right at all.

I would go straight to hosp..he is only 3 weeks, they shouldn't keep you waiting. Poor little soul, sounds like he's uncomfortable, definitely needs to be investigated.Good luck, and hugs to you x

Having a child with CMPI and reflux, I can tell you from my experience that A&E is usually a waste of time. They admitted DS and I (I was ebf at the time) thinking he had meningitis and in the 5 days we were in, nobody would look in to CMPI or reflux, despite me asking several times and I had to pursue it through my GP and paeds clinic. It took months to get him properly diagnosed. He had similar symptoms as your DS but no failure to thrive, which was a red herring.

No real advice, but when I was discharged from the MW (on Monday!) she said I could call the post natal ward up to 28 days with any concerns.

Just thought this might get you to see a paediatric specialist quicker?

Hope everything is OK.

I am very worried about Pyeloric Stenosis now as it is linked to excess amniotic fluid (polyhydramnias) which I had in pregnancy

MrsSB If it is PS it is a small op-honestly, DS2 was home the day after all back to normal. No follow up appointment even, he is 12 and has a teeny tiny scar.

Has he been checked for tongue tie?

That can cause all of the things you mentioned. They struggle to get breastmilk and suffer on bottles too.

Poor you and him.

Good luck with the hospital. X

I don't think it sounds like p.stenosis as the projectile vomiting sounds like it has only just started.
Do you get to hear back if the results of the heel prick are normal or only if there is something wrong?

DS2's projectile vomiting started at 4 weeks Merry.

Yes go. It's a small baby and probably (wrongly) as it's not your pfb you'll get less of the neurotic mum thing this time.

Absolutely go to A&E with such a young baby.

Symptoms of my baby were very similar, diagnosed as cmpi at 8 weeks after not regaining to birth weight for that time, very stressful.

I went dairy free (bf), we were prescribed the df formula as back up.

Biggest help was referral to NHS paediatric dietician at sick kids hospital, she was fab.

I now have a 2.5 year old who is still dairy free but thriving and it's easy to manage.

May not be cmpi of course but keep on and on until you get support, I saw 5 GPs at my practice until paediatrics suggested going df.

Really Sparkling ? Whoops sorry about that! I thought it occurred as the baby started to drink and the milk couldn't go down properly. Hope your baby gets well soon op

DS was readmitted into the NICU as a baby with suspected PS. it wasn't but it was something else equally as worrying. At first I was dismissed but when he vomited after a feed they listened.

On another occasion;

I was also ignored 4 times when I took my DS to hospital. Each Dr agreeing with the last, it turns out that I was right to be worried he had a broken leg which wasn't showing on an Xray.

Take him. Trust your instinct.

That is true Merry but it isn't from birth, It's ok at first then gradually more and more milk comes up.

I remember many years ago seeing a test feed for a baby with ps and everyone had to wear gowns and wellies otherwise they would be drenched!

We left DS2 with the nurse to go home for an hour, and collect a few bits. She was wearing a completely different uniform when we got back. Blush

I really hope it turns out okay, if you're worried and he isn't well it sounds like he needs medical care.

Totally separately, I'd keep looking for causes of illness for you and your daughter separately, as if it were CMPI then you would have essentially as much issue with semi-skimmed as with full fat milk - the fat doesn't affect the protein level.

There generally isn't much pooping going on with pyloric stenosis.

Reflux sounds more likely
