To hope I might be offered a seat on the train!

On Saturday my dh and I went into London with 3 of our dc. The youngest is 5 weeks, and He was carrying her in a sling. No shortage of people, especially women willing to offer him a seat.

Today, I get on the train for a 2 hour journey, with the baby in a sling. Standing room only, not one offer.

Would rather have hopes the (female) ticket inspector might have encouraged someone to offer up a seat

I do realise I need to learn to be a bit more vocal myself, but I was so cross, it would not have been pretty.

Surely these men have mums, wives and girlfriends, it seems so disrespectful to women!

"Calamity* I think your situation is different.

ruddynorah · 19/03/2014 18:00

You shouldve booked a seat. Most people do, certainly for a 2 hour journey.

Stainless · 19/03/2014 18:01

Ilovesooty- I thought this too, and asked, but funnily enough - no answer Grin

YABU to not to ask. I commute regularly by train and am usually reading or listening to music, and not checking out every single person that comes on to see if they need my seat.

YABU to insult people for not agreeing with you.

Lj8893 · 19/03/2014 18:02

calamity you deserve these Thanks and this Cake and this Wine

Hiphopopotamus · 19/03/2014 18:04

Should probably add, if someone asked for my seat as they needed it, I would give it up without hesitation. It just makes for quite a stressful journey if you have to assess everyone who comes on he train to see if they are more deserving of your seat than you!

JodieGarberJacob · 19/03/2014 18:04

2 hour journey, no reservations, stitches, baby in sling, 5 weeks since birth? It would never have occurred to me to attempt this on my own. Also I wouldn't have looked at you enough to register a baby in a sling. Pram, yes, toddlers yes, crutches yes, bleeding yes etc etc..

Lottiedoubtie · 19/03/2014 18:05

Shock. Funniest overreaction from an OP ever.

'Whine about passive women, special snowflake, can't cope it's a big bad world'

Flip switch

'You're all whores, fuck off'

Grin I love MN Wink

saintmerryweather · 19/03/2014 18:06

Praps you should have opened your mouth and asked

Calamityoncrutches · 19/03/2014 18:07

Thank you lj8893 I will happily take the Thanks but you may have the Wine as I am on too much medication but this op probably shows why people are so reluctant although if I gave my seat to somebody and was then told to fuck off I would probably sit on them.

shakinstevenslovechild · 19/03/2014 18:08

I particularly like the difference between the first post

I do realise I need to learn to be a bit more vocal myself

and the third

oh why don't you all fuck off you sad fucking whores

Looks like op found her vocal side Grin

ilovesooty · 19/03/2014 18:09

With Assertiveness skills like that I'm surprised the OP didn't manage to intimidate someone out of their seat. Grin

ilovesooty · 19/03/2014 18:11

shakin speediest assertiveness course ever.

shakinstevenslovechild · 19/03/2014 18:14

I think we can safely say MN has, once again, done it's job Ilove the op wanted to be more assertive, all it took was one AIBU thread Grin

HazeltheMcWitch · 19/03/2014 18:16

Wow, this thread was quick to turn.

Calamity - sorry that you've had such a rubbish day - have some Brew. You can see from this thread that people DO care, just unfortunate that you were on a bus full of numpties (or people who were just oblivious to the world around them - and I am sure that I have been guilty of that before also Blush ).

LeBearPolar · 19/03/2014 18:19

I can't imagine why anyone didn't offer you a seat.

You sound an absolute delight.

Caitlin17 · 19/03/2014 18:23

I am not sure I would have offered my seat. I don't see why having a baby in a sling makes you more entitled than anyone else to have a seat. I probably wouldn't have offered if I'd booked a seat rather than just being lucky.

My son would probably have offered if he'd spotted you as he seems to think everyone is more entitled to a seat than him.

NurseyWursey · 19/03/2014 18:30

Grin @ 'sit on them'

MammaTJ · 19/03/2014 18:30

Well, I'm glad MN has helped you be more aggressive assertive OP!

We're good like that!

ilovesooty · 19/03/2014 18:36

Perhaps if you hold up a banner detailing your sleep, stitches and bf status you'll be more successful next time. Accompanied by snarling and telling the other passengers to fuck off of course.

SnookyPooky · 19/03/2014 18:42

WTAF? Not even half a page and the OP kicks off? Where did that come from?

rootypig · 19/03/2014 18:45

Ime women offer seats much more than men. I've had an elderly woman offer me her seat and the young bloke next to her not even flinch. (Of course I told her to stay put!)

And of course you should have a seat, anyone carrying a young child should, let alone a tiny baby.

rootypig · 19/03/2014 18:47

Bah missed the OP's mental rant Angry

LaGuardia · 19/03/2014 18:48

Who takes a baby in a sling on a train for two hours in rush hour anyway Confused In your next thread you will be moaning that the guard wouldn't warm a bottle for you Grin
