To be getting fed up of female nudity in Game of Thrones ...

Up to mid season 3 so far. Are there any major female characters that have managed to keep their clothes on? It's getting on my nerves now and starting to ruin what is otherwise a really good show.

And have there actually been any penises on display?

I did see the opening titles recently and I saw the name of an actress that I recognised, and when I realised where I recognised her from (The Tudors, and the film Rush) I also realised that I recognised her as 'the actress who always gets her clothes off' and it made me sort of sad. She's obviously a successful actress, yet that's how she sticks in my mind.

Cactuar · 19/03/2014 13:29

Sorry did not mean to say there was no sex in the books - obviously there is but it is usually implied but not graphically described.

Lol Tunip certainly do not have time for that - in fact really should be doing some work now!! I did actually start reading them several years ago so have had some time to get through them 3 times. Am just thinking now that we must be polarly opposed as I really did not like Vikings Grin

MajorGrinch · 19/03/2014 13:30

Try reading the books then they are utter shite and extremely sexist and misogynistic. I cannot for the life of me see why is so popular.

That's your viewpoint & one I shall ignore as I love both the books & the TV series.

I really, sincerely hope that the author carries on writing in the same vein & can't wait for book 6 to come out.... One of the best series on TV for decades...

5Foot5 · 19/03/2014 13:31

and Blonde Barbie Girl bride having Dothraki ...

"Barbie Girl" does her an injustice! I won't post any spoilers but her character develops very well if you stick with it.

Jolleigh · 19/03/2014 13:33

Sorry 5foot5 but Brienne has been naked...the scene at the baths with Jamie Lannister.

I can't remember Lady Stark having been naked though.

That said, though the author didn't feel the need to make a point of nudity, I don't think that this necessarily means the characters were clothed.

I personally think that the show has been very cleverly done...as a rule, the female characters are portrayed in such a way to seduce the average male audience and the male characters done in such a way as to seduce a female audience. It just so happens that men are more visual beings in terms of seduction.

BlessedAssurance · 19/03/2014 13:35

Yadnbu. I saw one episode and that was it for me. I could not understand for the life of me why there had to be so much girl nudity. It ruined the show for me too. I read somewhere though that one of the actresses has refused to take off her clothes in future seasons.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 19/03/2014 13:37

'the female characters are portrayed in such a way to seduce the average male audience and the male characters done in such a way as to seduce a female audience.'

If you could do that you could make a fortune. Like GRRM has.

TarkaTheOtter · 19/03/2014 13:38

The books definitely talk about sex. But the adaptation is still pretty gratuitous. I'm pretty sure that events which are just recounted by characters in the book are acted out in the tv show.
Not that surprised though given it's on sky.

SinisterSal · 19/03/2014 13:42

I couldn't get on with them at all.

Things have moved on in tellyland - you can be a lawyer/conniving queen/hard nosed forensic type as long as you are sexy with it.

Tiresome

Agree with Burren

crispyporkbelly · 19/03/2014 13:47

Same as Blessed.

Watched a couple of episodes but sacked it off. Too much porn style shit for me.

A lot of shows and movies are like this now, horrible and very explicit. It usually has fuck all to do with the storyline either.

Isn't there enough porn around? Do we need it on tv now too?

RiverTam · 19/03/2014 13:50

well, it's not like there's a lack of male totty, is there - quite a lot of which has been naked - Jon, Robb, Jaime to name but 3. And you can't say that Danerys isn't a strong character, or Arya, Brienn, Cersei, Catelyn (sp?), whatshername who's going to marry the vile Joffrey (who is so surely going to get his comeuppance at the hands of a woman). The main weak one is Sansa who has been such a drip.

They are women in a man's world.

Don't know what being on sky has to do with it - they're HBO series, and they were originally on Channel 4 (or maybe BBC2? Can't remember now).

I actually think season 3 had far less than the previous 2 - Tyrion wasn't boffing everything in sight.

Doesn't really bother me - I know just as many women as men who watch and enjoy GoT.

CaptainHindsight · 19/03/2014 13:51

DH watched episode 1 after a colleague was raving about.

Review by DH

"Fucking weird. I think they all shag their sisters? There was a teenage girl stripped naked by her weirdo brother. It freaked me out so I switched it off. There is a cool little girl with a bow you would like but shall we try breaking bad instead?"

^Obviously quite the critique is my DH.

FyreFly · 19/03/2014 13:54

The books are pretty graphic!

Both the books and the TV show pass the Bechdel test with flying colours. There are multiple strong and "non-girly" female characters (Arya, Brienne, Catelyn, Daenaerys, Arianne and the other Sand Snakes, Ygritte, Asha (Yara in the TV show), Osha, Alysane Mormont etc etc.

There is also a lot of nudity, sex and a whole army of whores. Both the books and the TV series are stories of both extremes, which I personally find much more balanced and refreshing than a lot of the milder but completely sexist (in a much more subtle way) stuff that inundates popular culture nowadays.

SinisterSal · 19/03/2014 13:55

I suppose tv is competing with porn now to an extent.

FyreFly · 19/03/2014 13:57

feminspire.com/girls-of-thrones-strong-female-characters-in-a-sexist-fantasy-world/

This link provides a decent examination of five of the main female characters.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 19/03/2014 14:03

That's v good FyreFly.

Biscuitsareme · 19/03/2014 14:11

I'd just like to see a series set in a non - misogynist world for a change. Surely, this is not beyond some programme writers' imagination?

Biscuitsareme · 19/03/2014 14:14

I guess my related question is: why do fantasy worlds necessarily have to be misogynistic? It's fantasy fgs, be brave and create something different!

CaptainHindsight · 19/03/2014 14:16

Can i recommend Hannibal for a non sexist series? It is on the gory side but we found it balanced with strong female characters who aren't sexualised.

Series 2 starts here in April and I cant wait.

SinisterSal · 19/03/2014 15:23

Exactly Biscuits you can imagine dragons, direwolves, aliens, timetravel, all sorts of mad shit but you can't imagine equality or women's clothin that doesn't disintegrate after 30 minutes? Hmmm

almondcake · 19/03/2014 15:34

I agree with CaptainHindsight's DH. The whole thing with that blonde woman and her creepy brother and creepy husband in the first episode was enough sexism for me to turn it off.

I like Hannibal as well.

samandi · 19/03/2014 16:07

Yes to the above, definitely, a fantasy world where women keep their clothes on! Or at least a world where full frontal naked giggling whores put there for the sake of getting teenage boys off don't take up half the screen time. That would be awesome.

I really don't think of myself as a prude, but I'm so annoyed at it! It's boring. And demeaning. Like another poster said, men get to keep their clothes and their dignity. Even the strong female characters have to be stripped to remind them that at the end of the day they're just women like the whores. At least Daenerys is keeping her clothes on now, which is great - and in keeping with her higher authority now I guess. But even Melisandre had to get naked, she couldn't just stay mysterious.

And yes, there are some great strong female characters. I love Arya, Brienne, Daenerys and Catelyn. If it wasn't for characters like them I would've switched off long ago.

LaurieFairyCake · 19/03/2014 16:07

I'm also watching it and I think it's quite cleverly done for women.

Yes it passes the Bechdel test many times but more than that the women actively display power many times even though they live in a patriarchal world.

And the whole series is about power - they are fighting over a throne.

Caetlyn Stark - still fighting to avenge her husband, still trying to influence her son

Daenerys - a lovely quiet power but very fierce and ingrained. Portraying justice and benevolent leadership.

Not to mention all the others. They are very powerful characters, equal in screen time to the men which I think is an important point.

And the camera has shied away out of respect in some places - the murder of Roz, we didn't see the hideousness Joffrey carried out on her and if they'd wanted to titillate or torture for kicks they could have, they've done it before. She was an important character, had some great lines and great manipulation - what she did for Sensa was kind.

samandi · 19/03/2014 16:09

I haven't read the books - will get round to it at some stage. And thanks for links and recommendations.

OP posts:
LaurieFairyCake · 19/03/2014 16:09

They've possibly humiliated men as much as the women - is it Theone being tortured over and over? And what happened to Jaime too.
