Correct me if i'm wrong of course.

Agreed, this is genius. On my FB everyone is posting the selfie then the screenshot of the "donation received" text from CR.
I'm happy to look at the selfies in my feed knowing that donations ARE being made.

Brummiegirl15 · 19/03/2014 18:11

I wrote something on fb and the grief I got!!! People really took offence and told me so.

I'm sorry but I think by posting a pic with no make up on is just insulting to people currently suffering from cancer or those that have just lost a loved one.

I lost my best mate to skin cancer and afterwards organised a charity do, plus I did a marathon. I did not ponce about on fb putting pics of myself up for people to go "oh hunnie you look gawjus"

Even if people just sponsor a mate they are doing something!!!

However I did not feel the need to click on people's pics and quite belligerently ask what they are doing!! So why is it ok to rant on my post. Fuck off

Heathcliff27 · 19/03/2014 18:13

I'm not entirely sure where I stand on this one. Yes donations have been made that otherwise might not have been but I fail to see how a pic of me without make up will encourage more donations.

Possibly a nice picture of the wonderful scar on my neck that I have after having a tumour removed might make more people check for unusual lumps though??

NellysKnickers · 19/03/2014 18:39

I have seen 5 on FB today, 2 were wearing eyeliner, one mascara and another had huge great big black eyelash extensions, hardly barefaced Grin

softlysoftly · 19/03/2014 18:42

So anything that gets donations is ok? Well I'll go beat up a kitten and for the 1000 pointless likes I'll get 10 offended people donating to the rspca score!

I find it wrong because:

  • it says women are abnormal if not wearing makeup. What's the difference between that and The Suns "Check em Tuesday"? Both objectify women.
  • many cancer sufferers probably don't want to be reminded that beauty is all important when suffering mastectomys, scars and hair loss. I know my cousin doesn't.
  • it seems to be echoing the "necknominate" craze abs I find that frivolity when linked to cancer offensive.
  • exactly which cancer is this raising awareness for? Anyone know? No because noone is claiming it how pointless.

I've just had a rant it went like this..

All these bare faced selfies aren't raising awareness, if you're not already aware of cancer there's a problem. If you want to do something, donate. Don't use cancer awareness as a disguise for your narcissism.

We need a cure not self obsessed selfies.

I have been told, 'oooh you're so serious, it's just a bit of fun'

Yeah great I bet those really battling are having a great time.

I have to delete fb, I just become a people hater on there!!!

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 19/03/2014 18:53

Great post, Wholenutt. Mind if I steal it?

WholeNutt · 19/03/2014 18:53

You carry on Saga!!!

ScrambledSmegs · 19/03/2014 19:12

Oh, is that what all this blether on Facebook is about? It would help if people would actually say.

How can you be raising awareness Hmm if no one knows what the fuck you're on about?

Oh, silly me, one just came up on my feed 'For cancer, innit'. Well, that makes it much clearer Confused

KatieScarlett2833 · 19/03/2014 20:00

Cancer Research UK seem to be happy Grin

Atbeckandcall · 20/03/2014 11:27

Had a little rant on FB last night about this, and not that it isn't for a good cause or anything but that it shouldn't be for self glorification, and if you aren't mentioning anything about cancer when posting your selfie you're a complete tool. It was well received (thankfully).

Something else is irritating me though. The #cancerawareness. Surely EVERYONE is "aware" of cancer ffs. If not, then you've lied in a cave! Don't selfie for cancer awareness, selfie to raise money for research, to provide info on how to check yourself, educated people on how to minimise risks.
Not to just be aware that is a disease that affects people.

LtEveDallas · 20/03/2014 12:03

Well done and Thanks to all the miserable professionally offended cunts and miserable bastards

Thanks to all your rants on FB / MN / NM et al donations have gone up. UNTIL the backlash started (Mid Tuesday) there had been NO increase. Since then there has Smile

If it wasn't for the miserable professionally offended cunts and miserable bastards amongst us, people would NOT have started donating, they'd have just continued fishing for likes.

I took a note out of another MNers book and started commenting under selfies "Hun [I know, I know] I've clicked on your picture but you've forgotten to add the link. Can you re-do so I can donate as well" The amount of "I don't know what you mean" I got back was ridiculous - people WERE bandwaggon jumping and WERE never intending to donate. Thankfully most of the ones I posted on then re-did them, added the link and showed screen shots of their own donations Grin

I also posted on my own feed the details on how to donate to various charities with the tag Nominate, DONATE, Post.

Oh and posted links to the "Lemons" and found a "Grab your Gonads" poster for the men.

I'm PROUD to be a miserable professionally offended cunt and miserable bastard because if I wasn't then Cancer Research Charoties WOULDN'T have had so much money.

Thanks Thanks Thanks

goldenlula · 20/03/2014 12:19

I got my 'nomination' this morning. I had already donated last night, without a nomination. I thought about doing a selfie, but as I would look no different to how I look most days at the school gates, there really was no point. Instead I posted a screenshot of my donation receipt and an examine yourself poster thing on what to look for. I then nominated everyone to know there own bodies and if they feel or see something they think is not right anywhere on their body to get it checked. I also took the opportunity to remind men that they can get breast cancer too, so should be checking their breasts as well as other parts!

Fifyfomum · 20/03/2014 12:23

I thought the same, but then I saw news.uk.msn.com/selfie-windfall-for-cancer-charity

I like to think my endless rants about how bloody pointless and awful it is to give people the idea that taking a photo in anyway HELPS anything have gone some way to getting friends of mine to donate as well as putting up a picture.

I also haven't worn make up in many years. I might do a made up one to be different!

weebarra · 20/03/2014 13:06

Wish I could "like" your post LtEve, apart from the gratuitous use of hun of course!

Ev1lEdna · 20/03/2014 14:27

I didn't post a selfie and I did comment on FB about not knowing that some of the pictures are to raise funds/awareness for cancer as many people hadn't said that. I did post a picture of what to look for in a breast check (and lemon pic) AND donated money. I am not offended by the pictures although I was irritated by the knicker/handbag messages BUT I do think if people are doing it they should include the message, donate and pass on the donation details - that at least seems to have increased donations which is a good thing. That said I don't believe 'anything goes' to increase donations but this campaign isn't the worst I have seen.

Good to see Cancer UK getting much needed funds from this if nothing else.

Macdog · 20/03/2014 14:38

When I first saw the selfies on my FB feed, it was Tuesday night.
There was a lot of woolly thinking that a page was going to donate cash to cancer research for every selfie posted. Which as with most things of this FB nature was total bollocks.
Mid-morning Wednesday was when the Cancer research page posted their link saying it was nothing to do with them, but here's the number to donate.

I posted breast-check information and videos instead of selfie, thinking this was perhaps a bit more informative.
I did donate to two separate cancer charities, but that was my business and nobody else's.

I did however get a marvellous opportunity to weed out and cull all the brainless sheep on my feed.
So that was a bonus

OlympiaFox · 20/03/2014 16:29

yanbu, it's absurd, even more ridiculous half of them are still wearing eyeliner and mascara, somehow forgetting that by putting the picture up, we can see them and their not so subtle eye makeup. I have lost respect for a few people who've done this, I can't take seriously anyone who believes that they're 'raising cancer awareness' (who the fuck isn't aware of cancer?) by posting a selfie. Or using cancer as an excuse to post a picture of themselvesHmm Vapid narcissism is the new black.

Lj8893 · 20/03/2014 16:42

Is fake tan classed as make up? Quite a few I've seen are clearly rather orange!

hunreeeal · 20/03/2014 17:04

Fake tan, plucked eyebrows, dyed hair... not the "natural look" really.

daisy0chain · 20/03/2014 17:56

Well it make-up free so really none of those things apart from maybe the fake tan matter. However it isn't the selfies that are raising the money quite clearly. It's a gimmick and one that has got people talking and taking part. Hence donation of over a million pound in one day.

Lj8893 · 20/03/2014 18:02

Its just a shame its taken a gimmick to get people to donate!

roadwalker · 20/03/2014 18:08

I hate the sheep like mentality of facebook
