Why do you swear?

That's it. Why do you swear?

"Because I want to"s not allowed.

To make a point. Those who know me well will know I don't do it much, so when I do, it really means something.

Moonbeam7 · 16/03/2014 21:01

I don't like swearing (but I do do it when I'm really angry and just need to say F-ING HELL). But I wouldn't use it in everyday language... Probably just because I've been brought up to not swear and see swear words as 'wrong' and quite vulgar.

I went thru a teenage phase when every other word was the f word so maybe it's just out my system now?

Plus also why in my opinion it always sounds so immature when people swear casually rather then in actual frustration.

MamaTj that's exactly what I mean.

Science has shown it helps pain tolerance.
It really does - I whacked my elbow really hard earlier on and a jiggy dance and a couple of 'fuckity, fuckity, fucks' and it felt so much better. Grin

CoffeeTea103 · 16/03/2014 21:03

I don't, when my DH does he apologizes if anyone's around.

Bunbaker · 16/03/2014 21:03

Actually that just about sums me up as well Moonbeam7

DameFanny · 16/03/2014 21:03

The pain tolerance thing. Also the fuckwit tolerance thing. And because traffic jams feel better when you roll down the window and shout Arse at the top of your voice.

Cuxibamba · 16/03/2014 21:03

It's a way to express my anger. And often comes our without thinking! I don't swear often or casually, but won't stop myself (unless in front of children or people who wouldn't like it/situations it isn't appropriate) because I don't find myself swearing much either, iyswim?

Moonbeam7 · 16/03/2014 21:04

Haha coffeeTee thts like me. I feel I have to apologise after...

I find people who don't swear a bit suspicious
I think there was a survey that people who don't swear are more dishonest (or maybe I read that on here)
I just gravitate towards swearers

Fullpleatherjacket · 16/03/2014 21:05

Is 'because I fucking want to' allowed?

ScarletLady02 · 16/03/2014 21:08

Because it's just another way of communicating. I can speak the Queen's English if the situation requires it, but I can also give a drunken fucking sailor a run for the money if the situation requires it Grin

I love language, I love creative communication....and I fucking love the insult "Cock Juggling Thunder Cunt"

Moonbeam7 · 16/03/2014 21:09

Lol swears would call non swears dishonest because they just can't believe some people don't actually swear!

OP posts:
AgentZigzag · 16/03/2014 21:09

'I find people who don't swear a bit suspicious'

Hahahaha Grin

Is it more or less suss to swap the swear for a benign word?

FauxFox · 16/03/2014 21:10

It's my only vice - doesn't damage your lungs or liver or make you fat but is still naughty and fun (and annoys my mum!)

LumpySpacePrincessOhMyGlob · 16/03/2014 21:10

Because swear words are brilliant. If you look into the history of language swearwords are valid, and powerful.

They carry the weight and power of use over the years.

A good appropriately used swear word is like a spell, it has force and power. It's like exfoliating.

DukeSilver · 16/03/2014 21:10

Because I live in Glasgow :o it's just how we talk.

HappyGoLuckyGirl · 16/03/2014 21:11

Because it just falls out my mouth. Unless I'm at work and even then...Grin

Sometimes it's just called for.

Fuck no > no.
Fuck yes > yes.
Fuck me > wow.
Shit hot > good.
You fucking knobber > you idiot.

Makes me feel better too. Especially if im swearing at someone.

notnowImreading · 16/03/2014 21:15

Because I love it, particularly strange combinations. I like shocking people, too - even though lots of people swear, I tend to make people spit out their tea. I think it's because I look quite serious and speak with a BBC accent. It's only ever frivolous with me, though; I never swear in anger or pain. When things get really tough and I have very strong feelings I come out with gems such as 'gosh' and 'bother'. I have no idea why this is.

wobblyweebles · 16/03/2014 21:15

I do it to surprise my US co-workers.

justtoomessy · 16/03/2014 21:16

Because it just slips out I wish I didn't but it is just part of my vocab. I have often thought about having hypnotherapy to see if I can stop swearing.

BertieBotts · 16/03/2014 21:20

Realistically, because people swear around me. I am a total sucker for picking up bits of language other people use (hence my large amount of Americanisms, especially in type, because I spend a lot of time on the internet)

BertieBotts · 16/03/2014 21:22

I can't swear at work though or around my mother. It's really odd. Even if I hurt myself or am surprised by something. I tend to shout "Jesus Christ!" or "Oh my god!!" rather than "Fucking hell!" (Good job my family isn't religious Blush)

I don't seem to have this automatic filter when around DS though Blush Hmm

mrspremise · 16/03/2014 21:22

Because Brian fucking Blessed swears loads and he is the fucking bomb so I can do whatever he likes Grin
