As your blood may have boiled up reading that title, why not donate some of it? - www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-26577766

I have tried to donate twice - both times they couldn't get any more than a dribble out :(

Been told to come back when am 30.

I can't donate due to receiving a transfusion but nice work giraffes Grin

Bump.

MrsKranky · 16/03/2014 10:30

I used to donate, but once had a non-donation related collapse and now I've been blacklisted Sad

I might give them a call and see if they've changed their minds.

TillyTellTale · 16/03/2014 10:34

I have a cold afuckinggain, so I'll bump.

Good going, by the way. I knew the thread would be about something else, but I just had to click!

MostlyMama · 16/03/2014 10:35

So why is it if you've had a transfusion you can't donate?

londonrach · 16/03/2014 10:39

How you expect the feed the puppy and yourself with only 10 pounds.... Suggest you pop down to your local blood bank instead...... Seriously i wasnt allowed to due to anaemia but now on iron tablets can i now?

EverythingsDozy · 16/03/2014 10:44

I would want to donate but I have very small weak veins. When I have a blood test, they have to use the paediatric needles and often have a hard time to find a decent one. Would they be able to do it? I don't want to go just for them to jab me a few times and say no.

confuddledDOTcom · 16/03/2014 10:48

mostly is because we still don't know how cjd is transmitted and there's a risk that it is passed on by donated blood.

fluffandnonsense · 16/03/2014 10:48

You can't donate blood if you have had a transfusion can you?

ClownsLeftJokersRight · 16/03/2014 10:54

Giraffe Grin Reeled me in there for a moment! I donated for years then stopped after dc and never got back into it again. I've just rung the number in your link and have found out about my next nearest session. Many thanksSmileThanks

confuddledDOTcom · 16/03/2014 10:56

Giraffes, ask your GP for tests. My blood does the same because I have sticky blood.

Indith · 16/03/2014 10:58

Just donated so best leave it a bit before I go again Grin . mum can't donate anymore due to cancer, dh donates but just had the snip on Friday so assume he has to wait a bit. Must find that out actually, he was signed up to the interval trial so gets a million invitations.

notapizzaeater · 16/03/2014 11:01

I'm anaemic but now on heavy dose iron tablets, am due to donate in a 4 weeks will they take my blood ? ( am a rarish group so do like to donate ( up to 32 pints now)

Pudtat · 16/03/2014 11:02

You got me! Having registered I got pg and never donated. However turns out I'm o neg and as sprog turns one today I have booked in! Thanks for the nudge! Grin

MoominIsWaitingToMeetHerMiniMe · 16/03/2014 11:04

Great bait! I can't do it (received blood, pregnant and anaemic, bit of a bugger seeing as I'm O-neg) but I've just booked OH's next appointment, and posted the link on my university's chat/information/guild page on Facebook so everyone will see it :)

GobbySadcase · 16/03/2014 11:05

As soon as my latest round of tests clear me I will Wink

jojane · 16/03/2014 11:12

Little question 0- is the universal donor so anyone can receive it so in a transfusion it would mix with the rest of the persons blood be it o-, b+ etc etc.
If you are rheasus negative and you blood mixes with a positive baby's it can lead to death etc so why doesn't the same reaction occur when -ve and +ve blood are mixed during a transfusion?

MamaPain · 16/03/2014 11:15

I'm not allowed to donate as I might have Mad cow disease or something. DH is never allowed to donate because of his travelling.

EverythingsDozy · 16/03/2014 11:20

A rhesus negative person would create antibodies to fight off a rhesus positive baby blood.
Those with rhesus - can't have + blood but those who are + can have - blood.
I think it's because if you have + blood it doesn't matter if you have the antibodies or not, but if you have - blood you've never had the antibodies and it can cause problems if you suddenly get them.

Pudtat · 16/03/2014 11:21

Jojane - a positive person can receive negative blood. A negative person cannot receive positive blood - the concern in pg is that the positive baby could get some into the neg mum during birth causing problems.

ScaredToBeHonest · 16/03/2014 12:18

I tried to donate a few years ago but they didn't want me due to previous episodes of fainting, although the last time had been a few years prior. I might try again once DS is 40 weeks old as I haven't had any fainting episodes since my last attempt to donate, so donkey's years now.

Gruntfuttock · 16/03/2014 12:21

I've always wished I could be a blood donor, but as I've been on medication since my teens and I'm bloody ancient now it's not been possible.

Westmorlandy · 16/03/2014 12:36

I'm either A- or O- I can't remember. Either way this thread has prompted me to donate.

isitme1 · 16/03/2014 12:40

Brilliant thread
I can't donate due to medical reasons
happy to keep thread active.
somebody's blood has saved my life twice. Thank you.

nickelbabe · 16/03/2014 12:43

everythingdozy my veins are also very hard to find and tiny.
I manage quite well to give blood.
to the extent when I got pg and had to have bloods taken, I was shocked and appalled that noone could manage to get a vein and sent me off to the lady who can get blood out of a stone to be jagged with the tiniest needle I have ever seen!
they should get blood service nurses to take bloods from."difficult" veins
