gutted, we have had a really bad year this year things could not get any worse, I'm not going to cry but I need to start trying to focus on a job please advise me.

I feel sorry for both of you. Does anything tie you to your current location- mortgage, kids' schools? If not, maybe you could make a fresh start somewhere else- overseas?

This too shall pass. Sometimes out of these desperate situations, the most marvellous, unexpected opportunities arise. This has happened to us more times than I can count. Fingers crossed for you.

im so sorry. its a horrid situation.
My husband has lost 3 jobs in three years and is back in work now finally (looks stable).

Obviously its hard without knowing your situation.

My best advice is to do 3 things.

1. make plans for bills - if you have a mortgage contact the company now and ask for reduced payments until you are back on your feet. Call the CAB, get an appt and go and find out what govt support you will be eleigible for (JSA etc). If you alert companies to your circumstances they tend to be really accommodating so try not to panic.

2. Not sure what field you are in - but my husband went through the mill with agencies, job ads and recruitment boards. We found he had a lot more success in generating interviews and a good job offer with LinkedIn. Its free etc. Get your profile there up to date (seek examples of good ones) and you can use it to apply directly for jobs on LinkedIn.

3. Be flexible as to where you are prepared to work. We are tied to the south coast for now. I work 40 mins by train further along the coast, my husband widedned his job search to London (70 mins north). He had a lot more opps by being prepared to travel - and we are managing fine with one full time job (his), one 4 day job (mine), 2 commutes and a toddler and no family help. We have a great childminder who is flexible too.

Its all doable - i promise but you have to be prepared to think felxibly and sell yourselves in ways you may not be used to,

When I was made redundant, I had a notion of a business idea and wanted to explore being self-employed. DSS adviser encouraged me to go for it. She said that even if the work didn't come in, it would still look better on my CV than a gap with no work details. She suggested that if necessary I could carry on job hunting in the meantime.
