To be monumentally annoyed by Lily Allen on feminism?

SeaSickSal · 11/03/2014 20:08

Lily Allen, in her typical intelligent style, has said that 'Feminism shouldn't even be a thing anymore' because 'everyone is equal'.

This said by Lily Allen who never had to take maternity leave because she had millions in the bank and could just retire until she felt like coming back for a little dabble with a few tunes.

Lily Allen who has probably never worried about how to afford childcare or how it would affect her career prospects having a child, or worry about getting out of an abusive relationship when she has no money.

She goes on to say 'Unless you're standing outside Downing Street with one of those Australian bush hats with dirty tampons in place of corks shouting 'equal rights for men and women', you've got no place telling me what kind of feminist I am or am not.'

Well yes we have actually. Because she's been in an incredibly priviliged position since the day she was born and has never had to face the struggles most other women do with sexism, particularly in the workplace so we have a right to tell her not to use her privileged position to minimize and denigrate other womens experiences.

Am I being unreasonable to think she is a total nob?

Funny youthecat as it seems most opinions here are based on how much money she has/who her parents are/ where she was lucky enough to be educated....

Bit of course nobody is jealous Wink

Nobody questioned anyone liking/disliking anybody else or their right to do so. But using that word on a thread like this was raised as wrong. You can dislike whoever you like without resorting to words like that surely?

Think Lazyjaney has a fair point.....

YouTheCat · 11/03/2014 23:19

How am I jealous? I wouldn't have wanted her education as I am happy with the one I received.

I can't stand her father and so I really wouldn't be jealous of who her parents are either.

And I'm not really bothered about money.

doubleshotespresso · 11/03/2014 23:26

youthecat calm down.... I said most of the opinions here..... There are others upthread who clearly hate her just on the principle of her wealth etc....

You are entitled to your opinion just as she is to hers.

YouTheCat · 11/03/2014 23:27

Don't stress. I'm not raising my blood pressure over it. Grin

Wish she'd stayed 'retired'. Faux-Cockney child of nepotism. Zero talent. Can't fucking stand her.

I actually think women are the enemy of other women sometimes.

I have been told to my face that I should be ashamed for 'playing the female card'. Right, so because I like to make the most of myself, love the feminine vintage fashions/pin up styles etc, I am a disgrace to womankind because to some, I appear to be playing up to a stereotype of old and dragging feminism back by decades?

Feminism is having the freedom and strength of mind/will to dress as you choose, unlike in Countries where women aren't even allowed to show their face (under the guise of religion. Which having spoken to a Muslim friend, it's nothing at all to do with religion) and maximising that choice. Whether that choice be vamping up in heels, full makeup, pencil skirt and vintage pin up style or whether that be wearing jeans, hiking boots and a shirt.

I am sick of the one way street from feminists where it is okay for them to slag off any woman who they deem as being a bimbo/entitled/playing up to the stereotype but when anything gets handed back, even slightly, they turn in to screaming banshees of disgust.

I have absolutely no desire to be described as a feminist, I'd be somewhat ashamed to be described as such having seen some of the feminism threads on here.
I am a woman and I am proud to be seen as such, to me that is feminism.

BeCool · 12/03/2014 00:10

I used to like her.

I now think she is a gobby idiot. And quite ignorant. It's such a shame when she opens her mouth someone will print whatever rubbish she says.

daiseehope · 12/03/2014 00:31

Yanbu, she is Dreadful.

usuallyright · 12/03/2014 00:53

she's mates with Caitlin Moran isn't she? Hopefully she can sort Lily out with a potted feminism for newbies course.

HuntingforBunting · 12/03/2014 03:41

It is a shame that people listed to her. I think she's an idiot.

funkybuddah · 12/03/2014 08:27

I don't understand the backlash against what she said?
There shouldn't have to be feminism. Isn't that what feminism is about? Everyone equal.
It didn't read that she thought that the world was already equal or that she thought that the 'war had been won' just that there shouldn't need to be a name for everyone being treated to the same standard.

I think people are waaaay over thinking it and just using it as an excuse to bitch at her.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 12/03/2014 08:31

Urgh she was dreadful on The Graham Norton show!

She makes a fair point but just very badly and is super annoying.

Lazyjaney · 12/03/2014 09:05

"It is a shame that people listed to her. I think she's an idiot"

Sums up the LA haterz really.

ProfondoRosso · 12/03/2014 19:09

I don't even think she's a great musician, SM. Her songs all sound like they belong on Tracey Beaker.
