To be monumentally annoyed by Lily Allen on feminism?

Lily Allen, in her typical intelligent style, has said that 'Feminism shouldn't even be a thing anymore' because 'everyone is equal'.

This said by Lily Allen who never had to take maternity leave because she had millions in the bank and could just retire until she felt like coming back for a little dabble with a few tunes.

Lily Allen who has probably never worried about how to afford childcare or how it would affect her career prospects having a child, or worry about getting out of an abusive relationship when she has no money.

She goes on to say 'Unless you're standing outside Downing Street with one of those Australian bush hats with dirty tampons in place of corks shouting 'equal rights for men and women', you've got no place telling me what kind of feminist I am or am not.'

Well yes we have actually. Because she's been in an incredibly priviliged position since the day she was born and has never had to face the struggles most other women do with sexism, particularly in the workplace so we have a right to tell her not to use her privileged position to minimize and denigrate other womens experiences.

Am I being unreasonable to think she is a total nob?

YouTheCat exactly.

what annoys he more then her silly views is he attempt to sound cockney.

you are posh dear, we know and you know. it's fine you don't have to pretend you are working class. bless!!

Technotropic · 11/03/2014 22:26

YouTheCat

We are all equal. The first feminists knew that because it's a fact.

Whether others treat you as an equal is a different matter but that doesn't change the fact that we are all equal.

YouTheCat · 11/03/2014 22:27

I think it does.

Maybe some people are more equal than others?

Technotropic · 11/03/2014 22:30

So are you saying that the way others treat you defines your status as a human being?

Calloh · 11/03/2014 22:30

She can talk how she wants - surely?

I think she sounds normal.

Anyway we are equal, presumably everyone agrees that everyone should automatically be feminist like they should automatically be non-racist. Being feminist should not be a thing.

ADishBestEatenCold · 11/03/2014 22:32

There are an awful lot of quite a few people whose opinions mean nothing to me, but I would defend their right to have them.

ProfondoRosso · 11/03/2014 22:34

But as long as there's need for it, Calloh, then it should be a thing. And there is absolutely need for it, IMO anyway.

I don't have much time for Lily Allen. I don't like her music or agree with a lot of the stuff she comes out with. That has not changed with this latest statement of hers.

Calloh · 11/03/2014 22:35

I don't see how equality can be relative.

Also although I see that Lily Allen may have had less money problems than others I wouldn't say her life sounds like it's been a walk in the park and nor would I think that either public schools or the music industry are models of sexual equality. Regardless of this she is allowed her own views and to voice them.

Calloh · 11/03/2014 22:36

I agree feminism is vital - absolutely! But I also see that in an ideal world it wouldn't be a 'thing' it would be an automatic state of mind.

"Feminism. I hate that word because it shouldn't even be a thing anymore," she said. "We’re all equal, everyone is equal. Why is there even a conversation about feminism?"

I think you're misunderstanding the quote a bit. She's not saying that feminism is done and over, she's saying that she's frustrated that there is still the need for it today.

Please try not to misquote, thanks.

If she had said

"Feminism. I hate that word because it isn't even be a thing anymore," she said. "We’re all equal, everyone is equal. Why is there even a conversation about feminism?"

then you'd have a right to be annoyed. But then, she is ever sarcastic.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/03/2014 22:45

[sigh]

She was voicing frustration that feminism is still necessary, in the 21st century.

Perhaps she isn't the most eloquent, perhaps she was misquoted, nevertheless it is fairly obvious what she is getting at.

I doubt that she hasn't experienced sexism in the music industry or indeed at the hands of the British press. There's plenty that being Keith Allen's daughter won't shield her from. Hmm

doubleshotespresso · 11/03/2014 22:47

I honestly fail to understand the hat for Lily Allen here. Her comments were clearly made tongue in cheek. I do not see that her having her own wealth means she is not allowed a feminist opinion, or indeed how it means she has not come across sexism due to having money.

Which woman in showbiz is not subject to sexism? Think a few people here need to dust the chips from their shoulders....

Seriously confused ideals here methinks....

Mintyy · 11/03/2014 22:48

What chips would those be?

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 11/03/2014 22:51

I don't actually give one shiny shite whether she's a feiminist or not, she is a snotty, spoiled, rude, child-woman and if I lived in a perfect world, she would retire somewhere quiet and I would never have to hear her opinions and/or singing ever again Grin

kissmyheathenass · 11/03/2014 22:58

The irony of calling LA a bitch when discussing her feminist credentials. Sad.

doubleshotespresso · 11/03/2014 23:02

Minty I meant that those referring to LA as a b*h may need their sisterly credentials checked....

Pretty poor to refer to any woman by that name, but more so whilst questioning her feminist voice ....

doubleshotespresso · 11/03/2014 23:04

Kissmyheathenass- x-post! Apologies!

Mintyy · 11/03/2014 23:05

Oh God, quite agree, I absolutely loathe the b word and would never ever use it about anyone. Was just confused about chips on shoulders.

Lazyjaney · 11/03/2014 23:05

This thread is all about Envy IMO.

TheBody · 11/03/2014 23:06

no she's not a bitch as that's a female dog but she's very tiresome.

just a bit of me hates being lectured to by a silver spooned youngster. Lilly Allen, peaches geldof etc, sure they seem very nice but do please shut up.

YouTheCat · 11/03/2014 23:09

I have no chips! I never call anyone a bitch and being a woman doesn't mean never ever being able to dislike another woman because of 'the sisterhood'. Hmm

It doesn't mean I'm jealous either.

I just can't stand her. She has the personality a wet fish and the talent of one too.

doubleshotespresso · 11/03/2014 23:11

Minty sorry maybe could have phrased it better-just bugs me how a forum used largely by women on a thread such as this where a woman is the subject attracts feminists who think it is fine to refer to other women as the b- word.

Baffling and utterly depressing.
