To be monumentally annoyed by Lily Allen on feminism?

SeaSickSal · 11/03/2014 20:08

Lily Allen, in her typical intelligent style, has said that 'Feminism shouldn't even be a thing anymore' because 'everyone is equal'.

This said by Lily Allen who never had to take maternity leave because she had millions in the bank and could just retire until she felt like coming back for a little dabble with a few tunes.

Lily Allen who has probably never worried about how to afford childcare or how it would affect her career prospects having a child, or worry about getting out of an abusive relationship when she has no money.

She goes on to say 'Unless you're standing outside Downing Street with one of those Australian bush hats with dirty tampons in place of corks shouting 'equal rights for men and women', you've got no place telling me what kind of feminist I am or am not.'

Well yes we have actually. Because she's been in an incredibly priviliged position since the day she was born and has never had to face the struggles most other women do with sexism, particularly in the workplace so we have a right to tell her not to use her privileged position to minimize and denigrate other womens experiences.

Am I being unreasonable to think she is a total nob?

But even if you have money, surely there are plenty of people who have money and are in a privileged position who are informed and intelligent enough to realize the challenges others face? To have a bit of empathy?

And yes, money and having a showbiz job does solve an awful lot of day to day problems. Particularly those which would involve sexism.

And incidentally, it's only knob when it's on a door. When you're using it as a colloquillism it's nob.

I agree with her, but then I think feminism is bollocks.

TheCrackFox · 11/03/2014 20:49

I think she is just a little immature, that's all.

scottishmummy · 11/03/2014 20:50

She's talented but talks lot of guff.like David Cameron rich and out of touch
The happy wifey routine is a bit nauseating.hpgiven she's loaded and calls shots

Mintyy · 11/03/2014 20:50

I went very much off Lily Allen a couple of months ago when she made that offensive exploitative video.

PortofinoRevisited · 11/03/2014 20:52

I find it all quite depressing how quick people seem to be at slagging off other women. There are threads and threads about 50 Shades of Grey and all those fucking vampire films etc. And how hot Bradley Cooper/name muscled individual of your choice.. is. But the very minute a woman dares voice an opinion in the public arena, well how very DARE she? Not some decent argument as to why you don't agree with what she said. NO - she is vile and rich and badly educated. It makes me furious.

Calloh · 11/03/2014 20:56

I agree Porto

PortofinoRevisited · 11/03/2014 20:56

Victoria Beckham is another. She seems to be well loathed. She took what she had and worked fucking hard and made a fortune. She seems to have a happy marriage and 4 lovely kids and people will find any reason to slag her off.

Fantissue · 11/03/2014 20:56

No, SeaSickSal, I was referring to you as an obnoxious person, so I'll be sticking with knob.

Cheers for the patronising spelling lesson though!

Fantissue · 11/03/2014 20:58

And can I just add dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/british/knob_3

georgesdino · 11/03/2014 21:00

I still believe I can do anything I want and luckily have never personally faced any inequalities. Some people cant manage that though for various reasons.

PortofinoRevisited · 11/03/2014 21:00

I thought the "offensive, exploitative"video was taking the piss out of the other offensive, exploitative videos? That was the point, surely?

YouTheCat · 11/03/2014 21:01

It's not about her being a woman. I would say the same if she was an untalented male idiot, like that Bieber thing.

I don't mind Victoria Beckham. She gets on with bringing up her kids and doesn't spout shite all the time.

I have no problem with talented, slim or pretty women at all. But Lily allen isn't talented, she just got lucky.

John Rhys Davies said at the weekend that success in the film and music industry was mainly down to luck and having the right connections and I agree with him.

Pregnantberry · 11/03/2014 21:05

I think she was probably well meaning and like RRR said trying to normalise feminism rather than marginalise it. However, I don't think she fully thought her statements through as they suggest that she has quite a narrow view of the world. I am not trying to define her as a feminist, I just think that she sounds massively misinformed. Obviously it is a slap in the face to women who have to deal with major struggles relating to their gender - I would challenge her to try watching a woman being stoned to death as a punishment for being raped and then say that the world doesn't need feminism any more. Closer to home, as PP have pointed out, she has not had to face issues such as being sneakily laid off for getting pregnant either.

It would have been better to have said "I hope that one day, there won't be a need for feminism as it will just be a part of general equality which everyone will share in" but for the time being, you can't really get there without focussed movements which campaign for the rights of the groups which need it, such as feminism.

TheCrackFox · 11/03/2014 21:06

Yeah, but she took the piss out of exploitative videos by being equally offensive and exploitative. It was ridiculous.

PortofinoRevisited · 11/03/2014 21:07

I would disagree that Lily Allen isn't talented. She got high grades in her music exams (will go to check which) and she can sing. "She just got lucky"? Right. Like Jedward?

Mintyy · 11/03/2014 21:07

Yes, unfortunately she had to have several black woman dressed in almost nothing dancing in a sexually provocative way on it (her video) to make her point. She also needed to be fully dressed beneath the operating theatre sheets when labouring her point about weight and liposuction - presumably because she felt uncomfortable being even semi-naked - but has since lost a lot of weight and is now appearing in the tabloids under "Lily's amazing weightloss" banners.

As I said, I used to love her, so there has been plenty of thought and consideration behind my current pov.

Fantissue · 11/03/2014 21:07

Two wrongs don't make a right.

YouTheCat · 11/03/2014 21:09

I think having a father in the entertainment industry and going to the right type of school had an awful lot to do with her success.

Her singing is whiny.

PortofinoRevisited · 11/03/2014 21:10

Pregnantberry - she probably IS misinformed. Til I spent hours on the FWR board in here and made some proper feminist friends, I was misinformed. She is being judged for not having fully embraced feminist theory and practice. Which would be most of us to be fair - especially in our 20s. Its just they ask HER and not us.

Fouette · 11/03/2014 21:13

Spoilt little bitch?

Fucking hell what an unsisterly and cruel thread.

Blistory · 11/03/2014 21:15

I agree about the video but how many people thought it was clever and witty until it was pointed out to them that it was racist ?

Look at how long it took for people to call out the Blurred Lines video for it's appalling treatment of women whereas people were jumping on Lily immediately.

Why are Miley and Lily held to higher standards than their male counterparts ? I think Miley has it completely wrong with her idea of female empowerment but look at how quickly and forcefully she gets jumped on. Beyoncé gets it to an extent as well.

Which would be fine as they are role models and have huge privileges but we simply don't apply the same standards to their male counterparts like Bieber. He's apparently just being a young lad who missed out on his teen years. His mistakes are put down to youthful folly by and large and he's not expected to be a spokesman for all male issues.

YouTheCat · 11/03/2014 21:20

Bieber's behaviour is put down to him being a massive spoilt brat.

And Thicke was vilified for his awful song and video.

Technotropic · 11/03/2014 21:52

I still believe I can do anything I want and luckily have never personally faced any inequalities. Some people cant manage that though for various reasons.

This.

I'm trying to instil my girls with this attitude because you can. Life is too short to worry about the possible inequalities of life.

I think Lily Allen is right, we are all equal.

YouTheCat · 11/03/2014 21:55

But we really aren't, Techno. Great to teach your kids they can do anything and give them confidence. I'm sure we all hope we can do that but back in the real world we are not all equal at all.
