AIBU to not understand the fuss about Cheryl Cole?

Apparently Cheryl is returning to X Factor. It's on the front page of today's Sun newspaper, you'd never think that there were more important things going on in the world like a plane with over 200 people on board still being missing or all the trouble between Russia and the Ukraine

I have never got the fuss over this pointless woman. She can't sing for toffee and has an assault conviction which she's never shown an ounce of remorse for as far as I'm aware, in fact the whole thing has conveniently been airbrushed out of her backstory.

A few years ago during the peak of her popularity I updated my FB status to say that I couldn't see the fuss about her, that I thought she fake, that she couldn't sing and I was sick of having her rammed down my throat. From the many responses I received you'd have sworn I'd murdered someone. I was told I was a "hater" that I was "just jealous" and one person even said that they were "shocked and disgusted" by comments. I was unfriended by some people and was the subject of many passive aggressive status updates saying how wonderful Cheryl was and that she should "ignore the haters" obviously referring to me....

The hold she has over some is just bizarre. Maybe she's like the Demon Headmaster or something and has hypnotic powers that many fall for but others not?

I just don't get it, at all? AIBU?

well i do remember getting drunk but not punching some middle aged woman so hard that her glasses flew off and she had a black eye for 3 months, no.
also i did not racially abuse anyone.

SoleSource · 11/03/2014 11:21

I did read somewhere that she refuses to change her accent. I loved that!

bragmatic · 11/03/2014 11:24

I think she can certainly sing, but yes, not my style. I don't think I'm her target market.

The tattoo is hideous.

Fullpleatherjacket · 11/03/2014 11:25

Classic coat tail clinger (Ashley) made good.

She is however returning to a sinking ship. I doubt it's a gig she would have chosen had her own career not been so severely in the doldrums.

BumPotato · 11/03/2014 11:28

I'm not a fan of Biffa Cole, I must say. When she was first on X factor I was a bit mesmerised by her beauty. That passed. I bet her breath stinks.

LessMissAbs · 11/03/2014 11:28

She's very pretty and can sing reasonably well but unlike quite a few female singing stars, she has charisma and presence. Which is probably what makes her a bigger star.

Most singing stars seem to be quite attractive. I don't think Harry Styles is the next Frank Sinatra but he's constantly in the news too.

Even as a woman, I'd rather look at attractive moderately talented people on tv than unattractive. I guess that makes me shallow. But I find attractive people who have more to them than their looks more interesting than unattractive people who labour under the impression that their search for attractiveness, constant diets, talking about how attractive they are, makes them attractive.

Impatientismymiddlename · 11/03/2014 11:31

I hate the idea that she is some kind of national treasure.
How can we possible have a national treasure who is a convicted criminal, convicted for assaulting somebody who didn't want to fight and didn't hit back.
She is also not a role model for women. She has kept her ex husbands name despite allowing the press to abuse him. If she hates him that much then she should go back to her maiden name and dissociate herself with cole. She should rebuild her career using her own name.
She constantly has the press playing her as this innocent little victim who has had lots of bad things happen to her, but forgetting to mention that she has brought most of it on herself and to top it all she looks totally trashy with that ridiculous oversized ass tattoo.
She also is not the most talented one of girls aloud and was file when the bad gas being formed. She used to date a junkie and she has a brother who is a junkie.
Is this really somebody who we should label as a national treasure?

TillyTellTale · 11/03/2014 11:31

Went to a nightclub. Got drunk. Punched a toilet attendant (over lollipos, for crying out loud). Got convicted of ABH.

I don't like the people I know in real life who have done that! Because I find their lack of remorse over it colours my judgment of the good points I can actually see, dint of knowing them.

It would be strange if I forgot a complete stranger's conviction for drunken violence, when she has never even shown me a good side.

NeonMuffin · 11/03/2014 11:36

I've never assaulted anyone in my life, however it's not so much that she did it it's more that she's never even shown any remorse. All she has to do is say "I was drunk and made a terrible mistake" but no, nothing.

And she can't sing. Go on YouTube and look at her Popstars performances, she's tone deaf.

File when bad gas was being formed....... Not sure what happened there, it should have read ' was vile when the band was being formed', but she could have bad gas too for all I know Grin

Feminine · 11/03/2014 11:46

sole well she probably wouldn't be able to change her accent.

It is not that easy! Grin

squoosh · 11/03/2014 11:47

Didn't she make all matter of dramatic declarations that she would never work with or speak to Simon Cowell again? I suppose there isn't much going on in her career at the moment.

She's very pretty but yes, as rough as a badger's chuff.

MeadowHeartshimmertheFairy · 11/03/2014 11:51

The Tweedy (her official re-branding in my house) makes me scowl and eye-roll (admittedly unreasonably).

Really cannot see the appeal. I think she's more an example of the benefit of professional grooming rather than extremely pretty and the toilet attendant thing reveals a rather nasty side to her character, all a bit "don't you know who I am". I too have been 19 and drunk and I never got so far impressed with myself that I thought I was entitled to hit someone in a row over lollipops. Don't recall getting into any row about lollipops, full stop actually.

I would imagine she doesn't say she's sorry because she doesn't really think she did anything wrong and it was all the 'evil press' and a 'vindictive toilet attendant' just out to get her.

I do acknowledge that this is all complete conjecture though and that she might actually be lovely. My annoyance list isn't that long, but she's on it (along with Sienna Miller, Harry Styles, Angelina Jolie and Jeremy Hunt), god I'm a grumpy old cow Grin

MichaelFinnigan · 11/03/2014 11:52

But the poor dear has been terribly afflicted by that awful
Malaria she picked up. You never recover from malaria you know.....oh hang on...

Pollyputthekettle · 11/03/2014 11:57

Well you care enough to bother posting this thread.

What SelectaUserName said.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 11/03/2014 11:57

I think she showed her true colours when she had a go at that whats his name on xfactor, the one who couldnt sing but the public kept voiting for anyway.

It wasnt pretty, and that bloody man she married.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 11/03/2014 11:58

Wagner!

NigellasDealer · 11/03/2014 11:59

here is a good one -

Q. what do you call a girl with two cunts?

A. Cheryl

squoosh · 11/03/2014 12:03

I was drunk manys a time when I was 19, never felt the need to assault a toilet attendant though. I'd judge someone forever if they'd displayed such thuggish behaviour.

Impatientismymiddlename · 11/03/2014 12:10

Maybe she should change her name to distance herself from her previous married life.
Cheryl Greedy would be very appropriate.

squoosh · 11/03/2014 12:11

Does she still have 'Mrs Cole' emblazoned across the back of her neck?

LaGuardia · 11/03/2014 12:12

Thanks Sparklingbrook

You made my day with Biffa Cole. Meh. Grin

SaucyJack · 11/03/2014 12:16

Impatient

As far as the ex and the brother on drugs goes, then yes, in all seriousness she probably is someone we want as a "National Treasure".

Classism is alive and well in the UK and whatever else she may or may not have done, she is a positive "rags-to-riches" role model IMO.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 11/03/2014 12:16

She is awful - thuggish and talentless. I hate that that she is considered note-worthy by the media. Not someone I'd want DD to admire.

Impatientismymiddlename · 11/03/2014 12:34

As far as the ex and the brother on drugs goes, then yes, in all seriousness she probably is someone we want as a "National Treasure".

To send the message to our young girls that it's okay to date a junkie and be beaten by him whilst you are waiting for your lucky break on a reality tv show?
Whilst it is great that she has turned her life around, she has had everything handed to her on a plate and would probably still be living in a drug den hovel if there had been no X factor or pop starts or whatever it was called back then.
I think a national treasure should be somebody who has always behaved in an impeccable manner and is a good role model to young people, not somebody who got lucky and then married a footballer in gaudy fashion to make a name for herself.
