WIBU to phone the police?

welshnat · 11/03/2014 02:37

Apologies if this is a duplicate but I jut wrote a AIBU and it doesn't seem to have posted.

It's just myself and my 2yo in the house at the moment. I was fast asleep about 2 this morning when I heard 3 massive bangs on my back door - plastic part not glass part. It honestly sounded like someone was using a hammer.

I stayed in bed for 10 minutes absolutely petrified and finally get the courage to go as look out the windows so see if anyone wa there. Couldn't see anybody outside the front or back of my house.

Now my garden is very easy to get into, no side gate, just walk down the side of my house and you're there. It's far off the main road, so nobody just wandering past doing it for fun.

So should I phone the police or would they think I'm wasting their time? I just don't want to wake up in the morning and find out that someone else's house has actually been broken into.

Please call 999 right now. This isn't something that should wait until the morning. The police told you to call 999, and you should. I hope you're all right.

defonamechangedforthis · 12/03/2014 00:53

id call the police and give that mans name to them. and defo chuck something horrible out the window!

aufaniae · 12/03/2014 01:00

Leaving it till the morning actually makes the police's job harder. The sooner you call, the more likely they are to bf able to catch him.

Menolly · 12/03/2014 01:25

I'm really glad your Dad is there OP and I hope whoever it is fucks off and leaves you alone soon! If anything else happens please call the police straight away, that is what they are there for and calling them straight away makes it much easier for them to sort it out.

SadFreak · 12/03/2014 01:33

Omg. You poor thing.

Glad you have your dad there tonight.

householdchorewhore · 12/03/2014 02:03

I would perhaps look into putting up some CCTV tomorrow OP, if you can.

So scary. Hope you're ok.

ThingsThatGoBumpInTheNight · 12/03/2014 02:25

Hope you're ok OP
Thanks

But don't get a baseball bat, hammer, cricket bat, indeed any other weapon unless you're sure you could use it if needed. Sorry to be a wet blanket but weapons can easily be taken from you and used against you if the worst came to the worst, especially if you waver about using them.

Instead have a can of alcohol based hairspray which is ideal for spraying in someone's face and is the closest thing to mace I can think if legal in the uk.
A large bunch of old useless keys is a good diversion too, throw them on the floor, it will get attention, hopefully during which time you'll have had time for a good bollock kick or throat punch
And some self defence classes wouldn't go amiss may be good for you and DS..

Hope you never need any of the above xx

Ledkr · 12/03/2014 02:33

Omg

MiscellaneousAssortment · 12/03/2014 02:33

That's scary for you, how horrid. Hope you are getting some sleep now

c4ss3y · 12/03/2014 02:46

Id be asking to have a police officer wait outside the house all night if that was me. Do they do things like that?

giraffesCantBoogie · 12/03/2014 05:06

Hope you're ok OP

Rachie1986 · 12/03/2014 05:34

Hope you are ok xx

welshnat · 12/03/2014 05:57

It seems my father may have deterred whoever it was from doing it again. Who could see my fb because he used to be a family friend so was a friend on there. I've blocked him now.

I though the same thing about the bat so decided it wouldn't be used. I'm tiny so wouldn't be able to hurt anyone with it properly so would prob end up used against me.

I didn't ring the police because it woke DS up again so tried to settle him and actually fell asleep myself Sad I'm definitely going to ring the police in the morning an see what help and advice they can offer me.

Thanks again all.

Why the reluctance to call the police when it happens, I don't understand?

welshnat · 12/03/2014 09:07

Because I phoned the police the night before and by the time they turned up they couldn't find anything. I will be speaking to them this morning to ask what they advise if it happens again tonight.

OP posts:
aufaniae · 12/03/2014 09:33

They have zero chance of catching him at if if you din't call them. Seriously, if it happens again call the police as soon as you hear the sound. Don't waste time by going downstairs or posting here, just call 999 as soon as it happens. Anything else is making their job harder.

MusicalEndorphins · 12/03/2014 09:37

Yikes! Sounds like a security video needs to be installed. This person has no right to terrorize you this way! I wonder if there is some sort of booby trap that would help track him, wet paint he may not notice, and walk through, or cement and leave a trail or something?

welshnat · 12/03/2014 11:14

I rang 101 straight after the third time on Monday night and they didn't catch him. My home backs straight onto a mountain so he can jump my garden wall and hide easily. I am going to speak to my neighbours either side and ask them to keep a look out for anyone hanging around.

I don't want to antagonise him by trying to "trap" him, but will be getting the motion light today and also price up CCTV.

i started reading this thread when i was home alone in my new house! i got all freaked out and had to stop!

ihatethecold · 12/03/2014 17:15

How worrying for you, is your dad going to stay over again?

Flossyfloof · 12/03/2014 17:26

But 101 isn't the Police emergency number is it? I don't understand how you weren't so petrified that you phoned 999.

welshnat · 12/03/2014 18:36

I didn't ring 999 as I thought it wasn't an emergency that someone was banging on my door. I was absolutely petrified but they weren't trying to break in. Maybe in hindsight I should have, but I didn't.

Tonight I will have my mobile and house phone next to my bed with 999 typed in already. But hopefully they will have gotten bored by then.

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 12/03/2014 18:40

Is entirely your call if you feel you need to call 999 or 101, but consider that dialling 999 will not guarantee you an immediate response as the calls will be prioritised. Hopefully you won't need to!

welshnat · 14/03/2014 09:06

Just a quick update, no more trouble the last 2 nights. A security light has been installed and DS is off to his dads for the weekends so I'm staying at a friends tonight

So hopefully it was a one off trying to scare me Grin
