to wonder why men dating online...

...seem to only want to date younger women!

I am a 40 year old female revisiting the land of online dating and am struck by the difference in age ranges between male and females.

My (and many of my female friends of a similar age who date online) age range is a few years below and a few years above so say 37-47 seems reasonable.

A 40 year old man seems to think that 25-37 is reasonable. I have seen a few 45 year olds asking for women 20-35 and even those who can consider a woman in their 40's seem to have a cut off age as one year below their own e.g. a 45 year old man seeking female 35-44.

Why!!! I can to some extent see that childless men in their 40's might think that a 40 year old woman can no longer have a child but really....it appears that 90% of men in their early 40's are just not interested in a 40 year old woman.

Sigh...goes off to change age range from 18-34.

Its a numbers game it seems to me; fishing for young women. The odds are that if they're on the internet which is a massive dating pool really, then they're going to have some interest from younger women, amongst older women who may contact them. Its different than going out in RL and trying to pull younger women isn't it? Still..all that would set my 'perve alert' alarm bells ringing loudly

I have been on line dating for a couple of months and have had messages from men who are younger, my age, and older but probably more from those who are 5 or more years older than me.

The messages from the older men were generally better and they didn't just say hi and I am now casually dating a man who is 14 years older than me.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/03/2014 08:22

Anyone who said "hi" or worse "hi babe" was immediately rejected

Cariad007 · 12/03/2014 10:40

I once arranged a date with a younger guy I met online and on the day of the date he texted me asking if a) he could stay at mine that night and b) if I believed in sex on the first date! You'd think I'd cancel the date after those texts but no, I did go and meet him as I knew bad dates make for the best stories. I didn't let him come home with me like he wanted, but I dined out on the story of that date for weeks afterwards!

BraveLilBear · 12/03/2014 10:55

Same here sleepywombat!

She says men of that age:
Always want younger (even tho men on average doe younger than women)
Expect her to do housework or be a lady what lunches rather than tearing around doing a busy full time job
Expect sex ridiculously early
Expect woman to be slim and attractive no matter how out of shape they are

Essentially, the good ones are taken and the ones left either have the above mindset or are damaged, ie one recently was back living with his mum. Aged 50-odd

exWifebeginsat40 · 12/03/2014 11:39

yes yes to the pictures of men holding fish! why do men think fishing is a sexy hobby? i don't get it.

i have a second date with my 35 year old on monday. in the meantime, the middle managers and mummy's boys keep on messaging...

IfNotNowThenWhen · 12/03/2014 12:03

Here are the tru fax as I see them:

Men at 16-33 are still interested in women their own age.
By 34, most of the men have started panicking a bit about their beer belly and thinning hair, and the fact that they haven't slept with enough fit women, so they start restricting the age of potential partners.
In other words, they start to not want to go out with anyone over the age of 29.
By 40, they are entering mid-life mode, and starting to get a little less, er, virile, and they REALLY don't want women their own age, who a) remind them of their ex wife, and b) whose crows feet and love handles remind them of their own inevitable decline.
25 year old men, however, and only too keen to go out with (or shag) women over 35.( And they are so damn persistent Shock).
So, if you are a woman, aged over 35, you seem to have two options: Men under 30, or over 50. Hmmm.
Interestingly though, I once listened to a radio programme about a woman who had started a rural dating service. She said that all the male clients had specified they wanted younger and slim, and most ended up falling for women who were older and plumper, so what we think we want, and what we end up wanting are not always the same thing.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 12/03/2014 12:09

LOL at the fish photos.
I don't think it's that they think it's sexy, I think it's that those are the only photos of themselves they've got, and they only have those because they weren't taken as a photo of them, they were taken as a photo of the fish.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/03/2014 15:40

Fish photos
Motorbike pictures
Dog pictures (without the man in them)
Hi vis jackets

All no-nos in my not very humble opinion

IfNotNowThenWhen · 12/03/2014 16:49

Ooh, I like a motorbike! And am quite partial to a high vis jacket an 'all Grin

BitOutOfPractice · 12/03/2014 16:52

Motorbike says to me

A. He will be off on it all the time
B. he's having a midlife crisis of some sort
C. Most men over 40 don't suit leathers

glucose · 12/03/2014 16:54

Experience has lasted a week and have removed profile....far too anxiety inducing...MN is now fulltime hobby

BitOutOfPractice · 12/03/2014 17:00

Well I think that's a shame. If you go for it with the right attitude - ie it's a bit of harmless fun - it can be great. Plus I met my lovely bf online.

Foxeym · 12/03/2014 17:02

I too had a lot of posts from younger men, quite bizarre as I thought why would they be interested in a woman who was 40. I ended up meeting my DP, he is the same age as me and we ended up having a surprise DS (now 21 weeks) at age 42 so there are some good ones out there :)

JupiterGentlefly · 12/03/2014 17:14

I seemed to get a lot of pictures of men on jetskis, boats... have seen plenty of carp holders too!

TunipTheUnconquerable · 12/03/2014 17:16

I met dh online and he wooed me with a picture of his boat.
It was a bloody nice boat Grin

IfNotNowThenWhen · 12/03/2014 18:20

Ah, well, it can't be a recent bike. He would have to have been a biker a long while.
I like stories like yours Foxeym Smile

Suzannewithaplan · 12/03/2014 18:28

Motorbike @ 47, what a cliche, he'll have a near miss, then realise the 'crotch rocket' is too much for him and he'll sell it.

susiedaisy · 12/03/2014 18:36

Can I add pictures of men with only swim trunks on swigging beer. Pictures from stag weekends in silly costumes swigging beer. And pictures of them with half of their ex's arm/head stuck in photo. Pictures of them in their bathroom with no top on.

ComposHat · 12/03/2014 18:45

Sheer vanity. I really don't lnow who they are trying to kid chasing after significantly younger women. I mean the only thing those portly 60 year olds are going to get up five times a night is to go and have a piss.

Suzannewithaplan · 12/03/2014 18:46

oh the dreaded bathroom picture, with the toilet in the background, these guys really know how to sell themselves :o

giggleshizz · 12/03/2014 18:49

Foxeym...congratulations

Think I may need to change my search criteria to include the under 30s then. Might as well have some fun while I am paying for no men in their 40s to take any interest. Grin

Oh and agree with the photos and might I add sunsets and other random travel photos that don't actually feature the person. Why?
