I obviously could be very wrong.

I was defending you OP as well. Until your last post. If you think some world changing event will happen within three months you must be clairvoyant. Unless you are just plain wrong which is 100% more likely.

I'm with Bowlersarm - I think the OP thinks she may be clairvoyant and has had a premonition. Hence wanting to start the thread somewhere it won't vanish after 3 months.

Birdsgottafly · 08/03/2014 09:30

"Some super cranky people on this thread."

This shouldn't of been in AIBU.

As said there are natural disastrous happening frequently globally, we are just better at dealing with them, or ignoring the people that die/suffer that aren't economically needed/white enough to make the popular media.

My GrandFather died in Hurricane Katrina, yes he was old, but his life was still cut by a natural disaster, which he never thought he face again, tbh, the disasters his ancestors faced were of a genocide nature. My realities lost their homes and infrastructure etc.

He (we) are from Native American heritage (I'm also mixed with other cultures). Luckily New Orleans is a tourist destination, so people give a shit what happens there, so the evacuation of the city was well organised and executed.

There isn't really any White regions that over 50'000 people could be killed off by a natural disaster (the OP obviously doesn't count other countries outside of the EU as counting).

50'000 may not be killed on one hit, but the death toll eventually reached that in Natural Disasters that have occurred in the last fifteen years.

But for people who have access to MN and the OP, it probably wouldn't "change her World" unless, for instance , Cocoa bean production/export ceased, for example.

dunsborough · 08/03/2014 09:31

This is why we need a woo section.

Thumbwitch · 08/03/2014 09:46

Well, there's the Philosophy/Spiritual whatever section - that's where most "woo" ends up.

I think the OP is attention seeking, tbh. Hiding the thread now.

scarletforya · 08/03/2014 10:02

Fucking Hell. I don't know what to say. Op, wtf ?

Natural disasters are happening all the time. Are you hoping that when the next one inevitably does you can claim your psychic or something?

scarletforya · 08/03/2014 10:03

Claim you're psychic.

meditrina · 08/03/2014 10:07

The possibility of a super eruption (anywhere on the globe) and the huge change that would being to weather patterns is a pretty scary prospect.

But the one which scares me is new infectious disease - the rapidity of spread these days is remarkable. If Swine flu had been as deadly as post-WW1 Spanish flu and it had spread at the rate modern communications permit, then the total numbers killed would be unimaginably vast (I think we've rather lost sight of how bad such outbreaks can be).

Or of course what would happen if smallpox got out, not that most of the world's population is unimmunised.

meditrina · 08/03/2014 10:08

Sorry: " now that most of the world's population..."

WitchWay · 08/03/2014 10:11

Yellowstone sits on a giant volcanic caldera & is long overdue an eruption. I'd prefer it not to happen.

Bowlersarm · 08/03/2014 10:24

Anyone card to explain the implications for the UK if the Yellowstone volcano erupts? Would it affect us directly? Or is it just a question of avoiding California as a holiday destination?

HauntedNoddyCar · 08/03/2014 11:07

I think the damage to the atmosphere if Yellowstone blows could be catastrophic iirc. Dust cloud blocks out the sun for years etc.

I think there's a good chance half of Tenereife might drop into the sea and the resulting tsunami swamp NYC. There have been Horizons about both.

ThePearShapedToad · 08/03/2014 11:13

what if Yellowstone blows

Not DM link

twintery · 08/03/2014 11:15

I think that the natural disaster will happen within the next 3 days.

I dont want to have to write this.
I am a Christian.

Bowlersarm it would big time affect the whole of the earth not just that part of the US. On a small scale, remember the economic disruption of just that little Icelandic volcano having a party, and that was tiny compared to what would happen if a really big one went off.

In summary:
Whether we like it or not, the US economy affects the rest of the world's economy, Theirs would be virtually destroyed, with potentially millions dead from a combined effect of direct volcanic fallout in the area, choking ash blown for hundreds and hundreds of miles etc
You'd be getting a "Pompeiii & Herculaneum" effect for hundreds of miles around, people literally buried under burning ash.
The ash clouds would cause major climate change around the world, possibly for decades - think extinction of the dinosaurs level, species that had been dominant hundreds of times longer than humans have been around wiped out in a few decades
There could be worldwide famine, as the ash clouds would cover the earth

Have a quick look up of the effects of the Mount St Helen's eruption. That was tiny compared to a full scale Yellowstone event, so multiply the effects a few hundred times.

PandaFeet · 08/03/2014 11:20

I just watched a documentary on youtube about the Yellowstone caldera and the effects if it blew.

Fuck me. I was having a pleasant Saturday morning until that. So thanks OP. Hmm

Basically, it could trigger an ice age. The last ice age reduced the human population to between 3,000 and 10,000 people. So pretty close to extinction.

ThatBloodyWoman · 08/03/2014 11:21

It's like that 'Doomsday Preppers' programme.

Just choose what disaster you're prepping for, with great relish, then proceed to spend every penny on it whilst making your kids miserable doing regular drills.....

HaveYouTriedARewardChart · 08/03/2014 11:23

Ds, 6, is very worried about yellowstone. I think it's 200, 000 years overdue!

Still very unlikely in our lifetimes. ... unlike climate change which I am very worried about. I don't want to tell him about that. I can remember how worried I was about the ozone layer and the rainforests at only slightly older than him. Still worrying Sad

Allergictoironing · 08/03/2014 11:25

Be fair Pandafeet, when the last major ice age hit a) there were many many fewer human beings on the planet and b) technology wasn't exactly advanced; no heating other than a camp fire, no proper buildings, very little in the way of clothing that could protect properly against the cold, no modern insulating materials. So I doubt it would lead to extinction, though of course billions would probably die.

Cheery soul this morning aren't I Grin?

ThatBloodyWoman · 08/03/2014 11:33

I think I am, in order of scariness, most worried by:

? zombies
?nuclear holocaust
?biological or chemical attack.

In the meantime, many are ignoring that slowly but surely we are engineering our own downfall through climate change, overfishing and the destructon of the biodiversity in the oceans, etc etc.

Will we go out with a bang or a whimper, is the real question.

PandaFeet · 08/03/2014 11:36

:o

Ok so we might not be extinct.

But the world wouldn't be a very nice place to live.

There would be shortages of food, issues with electric supplies, people dying long slow painful deaths as a result of breathing in the ash cloud.

twintery · 08/03/2014 11:37

I suggest that some people hide the thread.

STOP IT!

You're scaring me now.

kungfupannda · 08/03/2014 11:45

I suspect that if we have an apocalyptical event in the next 3 months, OP, keeping MN running will not be a major priority, so the chat/AIBU is a bit of a red herring....
