I obviously could be very wrong.

That's good :)

I am a little concerned about our energy security. 55% of Europe's natural gas comes through the Ukraine and Russia supply about a third of Europe's gas.

KirjavaTheCat · 07/03/2014 20:06

Can't deal with this shit! Head firmly buried in sand.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/03/2014 20:07

Actually I think the 55% figure is somwhat erroneous - sorry. Shows you shouldn't believe everything you read in the telegraph. 55% of Russia's gas to europe comes through the Ukraine.

SylvaniansKeepGettingHoovered · 07/03/2014 20:07

Oh I think about things like this quite a lot. I am anxiety-prone though.

I have an emergency stash of candles, matches, bottled water, long-life milk, invade of some sort of apocalypse.

SylvaniansKeepGettingHoovered · 07/03/2014 20:09

incase of (not invade!)

Prettykitty111 · 07/03/2014 20:16

I hope I'm wrong but given our over reliance on antibiotics and the increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria, the increase in quick long distance travel and the inefficiency of our government and health service a plague is completely likely. Swine flu could have been so much worse and we were lucky. This what keeps me up at night.
Also did you know the uk and us governments have emergency plans for things like world war, famine, disease outbreak and all the major disasters... Oh and zombie apocalypse. That's scary!

TheCrackFox · 07/03/2014 20:18

What about that massive Earthquake in Japan?

Bowlersarm · 07/03/2014 20:19

You don't have any inside info on the government emergency plans do you Prettykitty?

Twintery · 07/03/2014 20:20

when in Japan? I dont remember one recently.

The Yellowstone super volcano is obviously extremely unlikely to happen at any given point.
There are some global cities which are at risk from earthquakes. Istanbul would be my greatest concern I think.
Climate change is the real threat, along with the natural disasters it causes.

SecretNutellaFix · 07/03/2014 20:25

The fukushima earthquake. 2011. The repercussions are still ongoing.

Bowlersarm · 07/03/2014 20:28

Do you mean a disaster directly affecting the UK OP?

mrstigs · 07/03/2014 20:28

The government so does not have a zombie apocalypse plan! Shock
Though I'd have more respect for them if they did. Grin

Bowlersarm · 07/03/2014 20:29

Oh no sorry. Just saw frm your thread title, that you don't mean the uk!

lljkk · 07/03/2014 20:31

Earthquakes.
Big rumbling volcano in Indonesia

Hassled · 07/03/2014 20:35

On an equally cheery note, I was thinking about the 1918 flu pandemic the other day. Wiped out 3 - 5% of the world's population - and was spread globally. Killed more than the Black Death. It just beggars belief - I can't get my head around it.

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/03/2014 20:39

No, no we are not overdue and will be totally fine. There will be no The Day After Tomorrow situation

This kind of thing really freaks me it. Always has. It was a real issue when I was 11, the whole Nostradamos/albatross/millenium thing - I was a wreck. My parents stopped me reading newspapers.

SylvaniansKeepGettingHoovered · 07/03/2014 20:54

I watched a programme about groups of Americans who've created purpose-built bunkers filled with emergency supplies for when the apocalypse happens. It really got me thinking, and that's when I started my own emergency stash.

I am definately a glass half empty kind of person and I do tend to err on the side of caution......

Prettykitty111 · 07/03/2014 20:58

Bowlers uh huh. That is not an urban legend I read on some time wasting website. It is true. The CDC will shoot any suspected infected person on sight so dont do a walking dead and turn up there expecting answers. The Americans have one for alien invasion too. We are too clever in the UK for that one. Apparently zombies are a base enough fear for most people that it's been included just in case. To be fair any zombie apocalypse plan would work well in lots of other situations.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/03/2014 21:02

There is a UK preppers forum. My take on it is its best to be able to be fairly self reliant for a couple of weeks, do our little bit to mitigate climate change, (try to tread lightly on the planet) and then enjoy this gift of life we have.

StealthPolarBear · 07/03/2014 21:03

Of course the government have emergency plans id e scared if they didnt

StealthPolarBear · 07/03/2014 21:05
