At between £75 and £160 per dose I could not afford to have my children vaccinated and really hope it becomes available in the nhs or at least cheaper pravately. Young children need beteween 2-4 doses depending on their age.
I'm debating really pushing our budget or borrowing money to have it done.

Fab news Ditsy!

Lets hope they pick it up!

No I have not heard of them I saw 110 quoted, 95 is pretty good.

OodlesofOods · 07/03/2014 11:34

There was a request last year for a campaign and HQ said they'd look into it.

BudsBeginingSpringinSight · 07/03/2014 11:36

Oh.....

I am surprised there has not been more clamour on here about it, this thread, the threads I have started.

Meningitus is what I felt was the most scary thing ever and all mum friends agreed, any mums I have ever heard talk about it.

Whenever baby falls ill, the docs, 111 all check first for men symptoms...because it moves so fast and is so leathal. I am really surpised by the response on here. ie there isnt one.

DebbieOfMaddox · 07/03/2014 11:50

I am tempted to get DD2 done, but it's a lot of money. Cheapest I can find in London is metromedical at £110 a dose; she'd need two doses with at least two months between them.

The Meningitis Research Foundation suggests asking your GP first whether they will get it in and administer it as a private prescription for you (or advise on another local GP who will) as that may be the easiest and cheapest option (but it will cost £75 at NHS list price, plus admin charges, so it's still not going to be cheap).

stopgap · 07/03/2014 12:16

Interesting. This vaccine is not licensed for use in the US. I'm surprised, as the list of required vaccines over this way is pretty extensive.

BudsBeginingSpringinSight · 07/03/2014 12:51

I wonder what the admin charge will be.

arethereanyleftatall · 07/03/2014 13:05

joyfulpuddlejumper - sorry, that was insensitive, you're right. That's why I hope it becomes available on the nhs. It's not right that only those who can afford it get it, not at all right.
Buds - I wish I knew less about it tbh! Verging on obsessed, ever time one of the girls gets the slightest bit poorly, I panic. Id rather not know about it tbh!!

JabberJabberJay · 07/03/2014 13:15

I really want to get this for my DCs. How do I go about finding a clinic that offers it?

Tailtwister1 · 07/03/2014 13:20

I called our GP who said they don't have it and wouldn't administer it. I eventually managed to find somewhere that will do it for £120 per dose, so £240 per child if they are over 3. I just called around a few private GP practices, although found the costs varied dramatically depending on whether they charged for their time.

DS2 had viral meningitis when he was 10 days old, which was scary enough, so I live in fear of bacterial meningitis. Weirdly DH didn't think it was worth getting done and said 'it isn't very likely is it!'. Well, just about as likely as it was for our newborn to get the viral variety I think!

arethereanyleftatall · 07/03/2014 13:23

Jabber - it's quite hard tbh unfortunately. the meningitis website just says phone around. I phoned all our local practises, none of whom were offering it. The one I used, I found through a friend, it was in Beaconsfield in bucks.

OodlesofOods · 07/03/2014 16:03

It's amazing how many people aren't aware of even the symptoms of menigitis.after ds was ill I gave out cards everywhere I went as I couldn't get over the amount of people who said 'oh did he have a rash?'

OodlesofOods · 07/03/2014 16:04

None of the local GPs will do private injections and we need nearest big cities for private clinics. This appears to be Manchester or Liverpool. Both a few hours away.

BudsBeginingSpringinSight · 07/03/2014 16:50

Homebirthquestion · 07/03/2014 18:09

perplexedtoday · 07/03/2014 19:56

DebbieOfMaddox · 07/03/2014 20:24

perplexedtoday, they don't know yet; it hasn't been around long enough to tell.

user1999 · 24/03/2014 15:19

It's thought that it lasts 18 months after the first doses and 36 months after the booster

VioletElizabethBott · 04/07/2014 13:51

My NHS GP is charging £75 a shot (x2 for my 1 year old then obviously the booster to come). I will be doing it. Have just ordered the vaccine now.
