to ask if any of you will be having your children vaccinated with bexsero (meningitis b vaccine)

At between £75 and £160 per dose I could not afford to have my children vaccinated and really hope it becomes available in the nhs or at least cheaper pravately. Young children need beteween 2-4 doses depending on their age.
I'm debating really pushing our budget or borrowing money to have it done.

I am glad you have raised this I think all children should have access to it on the NHS.

How old are your girls.

arethereanyleftatall · 06/03/2014 21:17

I don't know how to link, but make sure you sign the petition to get it free on the nhs.
I find it shocking that probably as I type there is a poor child desperately Ill with it, and the vaccine is there, just not 'cost effective'. It's wrong.

arethereanyleftatall · 06/03/2014 21:20

Buds - 3 and 5. So, dd1 isn't in the risk category but it didn't feel right just getting dd2 vaccinated.
Rioja - it's for ever.

BudsBeginingSpringinSight · 06/03/2014 21:21

I agree where is the petition.

Sorry! x pst

Latara · 06/03/2014 21:21

Does it affect adults too? I remember being required to have the Men C vaccine when I went to uni aged 24.

It's worth paying for if you can for children but it should be on the NHS.

BudsBeginingSpringinSight · 06/03/2014 21:22

In fact I think MN should make a campaign to lobby to make it on NHS and NetMUms too.

arethereanyleftatall · 06/03/2014 21:23

Great idea. How do we do that?

I dont know? Start a thread about it? Then report? See what the response is?

arethereanyleftatall · 06/03/2014 21:24

Latara - most at risk are under 5 a, and uni students though anyone can get it.

arethereanyleftatall · 06/03/2014 21:27

Maybe just be really rude on this thread. Cunt. Bugger. Duck. Then you report me for swearing. #novice.

PansOnFire · 06/03/2014 21:32

I'll be getting DS immunised, it's terrible that it isn't on the NHS. Hopefully it will be soon, it's disgusting that parents are having to pay or, worse, being left without the option. 76% is better than 0%.

BudsBeginingSpringinSight · 06/03/2014 21:32

NOT sure afterall, I think a thread aksing if we think it should be a MN campaign then reporting that hoping that lots of people say YES.

I want my children doing but nearest place to us is a 3.5 hour drive (each way)as none of the local GPs do private vaccines so we are still planning logistics as I couldn't do it alone due to disability.
Ds had meningitis at 2 months old and now I know there's a chance to stop him/the others getting it then I HAVE to take it.

Stop it now campaign

The vaccinations committee are reconsidering last years decision and reporting back this month but no date set.

Edenviolet · 06/03/2014 21:54

We saved for months for the first doses as dcs are unwell and we are terrified of them getting anything else. I just wanted the first dose done to get some protection and am keeping my fingers crossed by the time they need a booster it'll be on the nhs.
It has been the only vaccination where all dcs had the same reaction to it, a high temperature and very sore arm/leg where it was done but luckily they are all fine now just a slight lump where jabs were done.

We also gave them the chickenpox vaccination a couple of years ago as dd1 got it and was very, very ill.

BudsBeginingSpringinSight · 06/03/2014 22:03

hedge thats a good strategy just had a look at pricing and for us the booster dose is 12, 23 months after first doses by which time it may be available.

Just started a thread in chat and childrens health and so far no one looks interested!?

whitepuddingsupper · 06/03/2014 22:03

I want to get DD immunised privately but DH isn't happy about it being a new vaccine even though it's been tested and licensed, DD has had all her other vaccs including MMR. The only thing I can find about risks of bexsero is this which links it to auto immune disease but I don't know how credible it is.

ArgyMargy · 06/03/2014 22:09

You do realise don't you that no vaccine is a guarantee. And many have quite low success rates. That's one of the reasons the NHS may consider it's not worth the cost. And every drug carries a risk of side effects. Every single one.

worriedsick100 · 06/03/2014 22:10

How new is this vaccine - I have only been hearing about it in press in last few days.

Are there any reported risks with it?

Thanks.

ditsydoll · 06/03/2014 22:14

It was licenced for use in Jan 2013. Drug trials were carried out on about 8000 people and have shown usual side effects of childhood imms.
No long term research obviously as it's fairly new .

OP posts:
arethereanyleftatall · 06/03/2014 22:15

The risks with it, allergy to one of the ingredients, aren't on a par with the risks of getting meningitis.
Argy - this one is 76%, so, better than 0%.
buds - well done, I'll go find them...

apocketfulofposy · 06/03/2014 22:19

nope, but then mine dont have any so its no surprise.

ditsydoll · 06/03/2014 22:56

mumsnet have said they're going to forward it to their campaign team..
