To have been really upset by my son and his own clothes day choice?

DS is 15.

Today is own clothes day at school. In his infinite wisdom he decided that "for a laugh" he would wear his jeans with his sodding dressing gown!

I'm really failing to see the funny side. As all teens do, he is experimenting with finding his identity. MY DS has decided Mr Funny Man suits him best Wink

I was livid though. I thought he looked really silly and that the school would too!

Was I unreasonable? I'd like to think I was as I'm still a bit cross 7 hrs later...

ah he has a sense of humor.. that's a good thing in a 15 yr old I would think.

You'll know how it went down when he gets in.

Does it really matter that he wanted to wear something a bit silly? I'd be pleased that he wasn't taking himself too seriously as I well remember the angst that non-uniform day used to cause me. Sorry but I think YABU.

I have 3 teenage sons, one is 15 same as yours OP. After reading on MN about the problems and awful situations that some teens and parents have to face, I thank my lucky stars every day that I've had no major problems with any of mine.

I'd advise you to do the same.

World Book day and "Hitch-hikers guide" springs to mind.... just tell him how clever he was to link the own clothes day to world book day....

Don't be daft that is the kind of thing teenage boys do.
To be honest my brother still does stuff like that and he is nearly 26.

i think i love your son! he sounds fab, and if he can take the flack for it... if there is any... good on him.

are you worried becuase the dressing gown is 'past its best'?

A few years back a lot of the boys in my brothers school went in morph suits , so it could be worse.

You'd have had a conniption if you'd seen some of the ludicrous get-ups my little brother wore in his teens!

Well it's a bit odd - most teens are too self-consciously cool to want to waste the opportunity to wear something fashionable to school, but I certainly wouldn't feel angry over it. I think you are reacting a bit strangely to be honest.

I should have said it was light-hearted, and I do tend to throw the word 'livid' around a bit!

Actually, I suspect it was in defiance of the whole thing. Earlier he mentioned something on FB about it being difficult for those with self -esteem issues.

he has nice clothes though. I just bought him two lovely cardigans from next

I would be really proud if my 15 year old wore that.

Mine is really self conscious and would be panicking about looking cool. It would be really refreshing if he went to school in a dressing down and jeans as it would show he has confidence in himself and doesn't take himself too seriously.

I think it is great.

So what does the dressing gown look like? Floral winceyette?

(One of my teens has a Jedi warrior one. Never worn it to school though).

Are you worried that his teachers will think that you don't buy him proper clothes?

Sounds like your embarrassed for him...maybe it reminds of of an episode at school where you were openly embarrassed by one if these events? YABU anyway, 7 hours of anger is utterly ridiculous.

You really shouldn't project your own fears and beliefs into your kids. If he's confident enough to do this then you should be proud of him.
