Aibu to think that there is a type who goes into management? There are so many bad managers so what is the difference between a good manager and a bad manager?

Someone who will step out from behind their desk and get their hands dirty if needed.

Someone who thanks their employees at the end of the day and says bye rather than us having to go to theor desk to see of their handbag is gone to find out if they are still here

Someone who earns the respect of their team rather than demanding it. Someone who deals with issues that need resolving quickly and effectively. Someone who can prioritise. Someone who is professional. Someone who doesn't cherry pick work and participates fully in team projects, leading from the front, but ensuring that successes and failures are equally shared.

Someone who is consistent, approachable, someone who doesn't -palm off- delegate the majority of their job role to their - minions - team.

The best manager I ever had was uncouth, common and with an air of chaos about him.

He rejuvenated our team and had everyone bending over backwards to do more, better. It was a huge loss when he moved on.

We all ended up working overtime, checking mail at home, chatting and just enjoying our jobs and hanging out with each other.

He wasn't afraid to delegate responsibility and I think this was a major key - I felt like I was doing something real rather than just being told which buttons to press.

Someone else mentioned that good ones take the time to find out about their staff. One time whilst reaching for tissues as I blubbed he told me that they'd ALL been in for a weep (only 3 women and about 20 men).Grin Oh, did I mention he was in discrete too?
