To have just shouted at a horse rider outside my house

BigRedBall · 04/03/2014 13:40

Have namechanged for privacy.

I am so angry right now. We sometimes (twice a year at most) get horses going past our house as we live around the corner from a small private farm. We live in a city, so it's quite a novelty when we hear the sound of "clip clop" outside.

About 20 mins ago we heard the sound of clip clop and I took DS to the front room to look outside. As we watched the horses go by one stopped and kind of turned around and SHITTED RIGHT OUTSIDE MY DRIVEWAY. Not a small bit...a big arse full of horse shit. And the rider laughed at her other horsey friends.

As soon as I saw it I put my shoes on and ran outside and the rider was going on her way again. Her friends had gone up ahead. I ran up to her shouting "excuse me" and she wouldn't stop. I shouted at her if she was going to clear up the horse poo outside my house and she replied "stop shouting at me" without even turning around to see I had a toddler in my arms.

I couldn't go any further because I was holding my DS and had left a sleeping baby inside.

Now I have a pile of horse shit outside my house, and I want to actually KILL this horse rider. Our road is a school route and I don't want children stepping in it but why the fuck should I have to clear it up? I am so pissed off. I want to get into the car and hunt down the fuckers and pull them back by their ears and tell them to clean it.

...neigh need for all this unpleasantness.

saintlyjimjams · 05/03/2014 09:51

How would a pothole seriously damage a horse? Have you ever been anywhere near your average yard? (Obviously not)

Flambards · 05/03/2014 09:51

When horse riders contribute road tax then I will accept their apparent God-given right to slow/stop the traffic

It's not a road tax, it's a pollution tax, which is why it varies based on the emissions rating of your car.

LiberalLibertine · 05/03/2014 09:52

Has anyone ever been thrown from their bike by horse shit though? Confused

Morning op!

Thumbwitch · 05/03/2014 09:52

"Cars also don't tend to leave shit on the road..."
Err, no, not shit, but they do leak oil which is WAY more dangerous.

"... or defecate from their windows."
Unless driven by the sort of moron who likes to discard their junk out the window as they drive along, rather than putting it in an actual bin.

catinbootz · 05/03/2014 09:53

I am ^crying^ at the shitting sleigh dogs Grin

saintlyjimjams · 05/03/2014 09:53

If someone is thrown from their bike by horse shit they're going too fast.

The Road Traffic Act

The Road Traffic Act, 1993, states that a farmer is responsible for muck left on the road which could subsequently lead to an accident. Simple examples which can result in expensive legal actions include accidents arising from dirt on roads belonging to individual farmers, livestock entering a neighbour's property and causing damage or accidents arising from livestock.

The Animals Act
The Animals Act, 1985, states that a farmer is responsible for accidents or damage caused by his/her livestock. This type of incident is catered for under Public Liability insurance. FBD offers a standard limit of indemnity of €2.6 million. We would once again emphasise the importance of making a full declaration of work activities to us. "

Think that settles it for me.

Select a name - please, please point out to me where I said cars had priority. I don't see that anywhere. I DID say if you had read my post that mutual consideration was the ideal, are horse riders somehow ABOVE picking up their horse shit? Get a bin bag and show some consideration for bikers too, I do, every time I ride. I slow down even before getting any signals from the owner, all the time. Why won't you help prevent me have an accident?

saintlyjimjams · 05/03/2014 09:55

I don't think a single horse poo would count as muck that could subsequently lead to an accident.

saintlyjimjams · 05/03/2014 09:57

What has farmer's livestock got to do with a single horse being ridden? If someone charges up behind a horse shouting and waving their arms any resulting accident has been caused by their stupidity, not the horse rider.

fullerlonger · 05/03/2014 09:59

I ride but I am not a farmer lets horse shit with impunity

stealthsquiggle · 05/03/2014 10:01

Tractors do pay road tax, AFAIK, and they get way more mud/muck/poo ('tis all the same, after all) on the roads than the animals do directly. Farmers do their best to scrape /sluice it, but our cars are pretty much mud-coloured for large parts of the year (but most of all when they are harvesting potatoes - half the field seems to come out on the tractor tyres each time).

comes with the territory. Same as traffic pollution does in cities.

fullerlonger · 05/03/2014 10:01

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ROAD TAX

stealthsquiggle · 05/03/2014 10:03

Sorry. Vehicle Excise Duty. The stuff which doesn't go towards road maintenance but which PP keep banging on about. Even though it's entirely irrelevant. That.

fullerlonger · 05/03/2014 10:06

INCOME TAX pays for roads

so by the logic on some of these posts if you don't pay income tax you shouldn't use the roads Confused

melika · 05/03/2014 10:06

You should scoop it up and put in on your roses! If you have any.

Seriously though, she would have to have a hell of big poop bag to take that home with her.

Shonajoy Farmers and horse riders are not the same. Horses are not classed as agricultural animals under DEFRA classification. They are not "farmed", they are leisure animals. Very, very few farmers own horses because there is no money in them. There is no legal requirement for horse shit to be removed from the road.

Your introduction of general farm muck / slurry on the road and farmers' responsibility to clear it up is irrelevant to the discussion at hand.

kentishgirl · 05/03/2014 10:14

For anyone not clear on the meaning of riders' hand signals, here's a nice little guide. It's not arrogance to use them - it is a requirement of the Highway Code. Cars have indicators and brake lights. Horses don't. The signals replace these.

Oh, and am I the only one who grew up playing cowflop frizbee? Great fun.

saintlyjimjams · 05/03/2014 10:15

I'm another ex cowpat frizbee player.....

fullerlonger · 05/03/2014 10:17

And fwiw, my oldest dd completed a long and quite arduous course in learning to ride safely on the roads with her Pony Club. The exam was tough. She is probably better qualified to be on the roads than the average cyclist tbh.

if ever I saw a thread designed to promote the legalisation of cannabis, it's this one. OP, you really need to chill out. God only knows what would happen if someone parked across your driveway..,.

Cigarettesandsmirnoff · 05/03/2014 10:20

Anyway, my point is, you were very U, it wasn't even on your property so I don't really see how it affects you

If a big steaming pile of turd is outside the gate obstructing entrance it's an issue.

UANBU

fullerlonger · 05/03/2014 10:21

JUST DRIVE OVER IT

lol about legalisation of cannabis, very true.

WillieWaggledagger · 05/03/2014 10:34

at times of ploughing/harvesting/moving livestock round here there are always signs up on the road that the farmers erect warning of mud on the road etc
