To have just shouted at a horse rider outside my house

Have namechanged for privacy.

I am so angry right now. We sometimes (twice a year at most) get horses going past our house as we live around the corner from a small private farm. We live in a city, so it's quite a novelty when we hear the sound of "clip clop" outside.

About 20 mins ago we heard the sound of clip clop and I took DS to the front room to look outside. As we watched the horses go by one stopped and kind of turned around and SHITTED RIGHT OUTSIDE MY DRIVEWAY. Not a small bit...a big arse full of horse shit. And the rider laughed at her other horsey friends.

As soon as I saw it I put my shoes on and ran outside and the rider was going on her way again. Her friends had gone up ahead. I ran up to her shouting "excuse me" and she wouldn't stop. I shouted at her if she was going to clear up the horse poo outside my house and she replied "stop shouting at me" without even turning around to see I had a toddler in my arms.

I couldn't go any further because I was holding my DS and had left a sleeping baby inside.

Now I have a pile of horse shit outside my house, and I want to actually KILL this horse rider. Our road is a school route and I don't want children stepping in it but why the fuck should I have to clear it up? I am so pissed off. I want to get into the car and hunt down the fuckers and pull them back by their ears and tell them to clean it.

Someone needs to invent an exceptionally long handled pooper scooper!

YouTheCat · 04/03/2014 16:01

But Corus, Grey has said she doesn't ride in built up areas and I think she sounds entirely sensible.

usualsuspect33 · 04/03/2014 16:02

I'd be bloody annoyed if a horse left a pile of shit outside my house.

I used to live on a road where horses merrily shit all day long, and actually I used to find it worse when it was driven up and down on cars' tyres. Dancing about with pushchairs trying not to run the wheels through it was a bit annoying at times, especially after I'd just been dropping the dog's poo off in the poo bin. But never let it be said that I didn't have a rich and fulfilling time in that house.

Can you turn it into a lovely history lesson? "Imagine what the streets of central London must have been like, Jemima, when the main form of transport was horses! Nag plop as far as the eye could see..."

HuskyBlueEyes · 04/03/2014 16:07

And by you shouting, you didn't think for one little second you may scare yet more shit out of the horse, and result in a rider falling off and injuring herself, possibly very badly.

YADBU and sound like a fucking idiot right now. Its horse shit, grass and maybe just maybe some hay pulped up in there... Harmless, unlike dog/cat crap which has parasites involved.

Get over yourself, she's not exactly going to get off, pick it up, tie her horse to a fence post and then put it in a local bin, then remount her horse and as for them lying - what a load of crock.

HuskyBlueEyes · 04/03/2014 16:08

*laughing not lying

Essiebee · 04/03/2014 16:08

When horse riders contribute road tax then I will accept their apparent God-given right to slow/stop the traffic and deposit disgusting messes on roads and pavements where people walk, as frequently happens in the village where I live. Why should dog owners be expected to clear their dog mess up and horse riders be exempt? Is it not possible to tether a horse to a lamp-post while clearing the mess up? Or possibly stay riding on the bridle paths, which is what they were designed for.

squoosh · 04/03/2014 16:08

The horsey people sound far more aggressive than the OP.

BigRedBall · 04/03/2014 16:09

Those of you asking how she was supposed to clear it up:

She could've at least offered to come back and clean it.

Everyone is always going on about how dog owners should clear their mess. This is the same. I'd expect her to come back with a shovel and a bin bag and clean it.

I can't believe I'm being called "entitled"! Isn't the horse rider entitled to think she can let her horse shit anywhere and doesn't have to clean it because....it's clean, fresh, touchable, edible, roll about in it-able horse shit.

Yes, quite.

saintlyjimjams when I was learning to ride in a covered menage people leading horses outside would always shout out: 'coming by'.

As a child from a non-horsey family I thought it was a quaint tradition until I saw someone who didn't do it spook a pony that could have been stopped by the instructor if the other person had had more sense.

Also the thing with people behind you on a hack slowing to a walk and calling when they want to pass.

It's not just polite, it's safe. Which I think is proper courtesy and roadcraft - whether you're on the road or not.

I learned to ride in the suburbs. You have to use roads and off-road it's crowded with riders and walkers. A horse isn't that more dangerous than other people considering that you encounter far more unpredictable drivers, cyclists and pedestrians than horses.

Some riders are arseholes but everyone should learn that it's a shared space and that with a bit of accommodation we can all live together.

usualsuspect33 · 04/03/2014 16:12

They do, Squoosh.

Change the word horse for dog in the OP and they would be telling her to shove the shit through the owners letterbox.

NigellasDealer · 04/03/2014 16:12

"Is it not possible to tether a horse to a lamp-post while clearing the mess up?" - no not really.

"Or possibly stay riding on the bridle paths, which is what they were designed for" - you will find the majority of bridle paths illegally blocked off by aggressive horse hating land owners or taken over by trail bikers

Morgause · 04/03/2014 16:14

Horse shit doesn't blind people or cause serious illness. Unlike cat and dog shit.

OP you're worrying about the wrong kind of shit.

usualsuspect33 · 04/03/2014 16:15

It's still unpleasant to have a dollop of shit outside your front door.

Adeleh · 04/03/2014 16:15

And horse shit is still shit. Even though the horse may only eat grass it's still a living organism that adds it's own unpleasant elements into the mix - am just hoping that those of you who don't mind picking it up with your bare hands have made sure that your tetanus jabs are up to date.

Shepherd3011 · 04/03/2014 16:16

If I was the rider I would be reporting you to the police. What a stupid and dangerous thing to do.

BigRedBall · 04/03/2014 16:18

Morgouse that's okay then. Let me go and jump in it and then walk back in my house and leave a trail of it everywhere. I won't go blind, so that's ok Hmm.

squoosh I can't vouch for everyone on this thread, but I'd like to think I'm not, as evidenced by my previous post.

I'm still laughing at the outrage at horseshit in the road.

I now live in Central London where it gets dropped from police horses and cavalry horses.

I get quite childishly joyful when I see them clip-clopping down the street. Try as I might, I can't drum up the same enthusiasm for cars and vans who are entitled to use the roads too.
